Some people have the misconception that skate board parks attract the wrong type of crowd. Skate boarders are not biker gangs, just regular kids. Also, it's safer to have an enclosed space for kids to practice new skating skills, instead of them grinding the sidewalks and damaging handrails on public streets. I hope that vandals don't start tagging this park the way they did Potrero del Sol Skatepark. That other place is all made of concrete, so the graffiti can be painted over or sandblasted. Sometimes you'll find dog owners playing in the open areas. It opened in 2008. The place is an urban oasis, surrounded by the busy 101 freeway on one side, and cars buzzing on Potrero Ave. on the other side. But it's pretty peaceful at night. This skatepark is just a year old. Best place in the bay area to watch skateboarders do their thing. At the moment, everyone is respectful, and gets along well. It's also a convenient location when you get hungry, because of the many great places to eat nearby on 24th. The directions to get here are simple: from the 24th & Mission BART station, go down 24th street towards Potrero Ave., carefully cross Potrero (watch out for speeding cars) then turn right on Utah (at Jack's Club), one block to the park entrance. If you're driving, there are many free parking spots at the entrance. Hours: daily until 9pm.

Best when you roll in with your friends…read more I have a strong love/hate relationship with this rink for many reasons (in the short 5 months I've started roller skating). I'll start with the negative; With any public place, you really have to watch out for yourself and your safety. I've gotten physically shoved by one of the older white men who felt like he owned the rink. There are times where you have sketchy people who don't skate and are eying your valuables or may be harassing people. There are some older folks you may need to watch out for, as they are extremely territorial and not friendly to beginners and new skaters. I will say that it is only a tiny percentage of the folks that skate here. On the positive side; It's generally pretty welcoming. If someone is working on something cool that you're interested in and you ask, some people are pretty cool with showing you the ropes and love working on it with you! I've made so many good friends just showing up and working on my own moves and people chatting me up. In general, you just gotta show up and assess the vibe, as it really changes depending on who's skating there. Generally I'd advise going on: Tuesdays and Fridays anytime from 4pm - 10pm (solid group of skaters who watch out for each other and bring lights and music when it gets dark) Saturdays and Sundays anytime from 12pm - 6pm (A lot busier and crowded. Your experience may vary depending on who you know and feel comfortable skating with on the weekend). I typically always go with friends for safety.

I tried my very best convincing Dani to test her skating skills skatin Da Deep, Sick Bowl! Dani took one look at Da Bowl and she became really scared! Dani freaked out and said, "Uh, I think I go skate the beach walkway instead . . ." Dani bolted across the street with her board while Tom was doin' handstands on the coping!

Hunter's Point doesn't bring to mind anything so beautiful - usually you just hear about the toxic levels of pollution that they build affordable housing on top of - but that is a totally different converstion. The park has an elevation that is just enough to get great views from anywhere you look. I think this is the highlight. Hard to believe that such prime real estate was utilized for just a park. Newer everything at this park. Structures and landscape. Nothing is super perfect but it has a certain level of care that is more than good enough. I wouldn't hesitate to drive 5 or 10 miles to get to this park. Dogs and kids will love it.

The park is easy to find but finding parking is difficult. I ended up parking two blocks away but it was an ok walk to the entrance. The park is clean, the structures are well maintained and there is a gate that allows for security while the little ones play. Of course my nephew is sleep and remains that way which gives you an idea as to the low noise level at the park. I would recommend ages 1-6 as the play are is a bit small and designed for smaller children. There are a plethora of benches for parental seating that allows for observation as your little ones play. I brought a blanket, finding an area underneath a tree more preferable. The ground is turf which makes for easy falls without the scrapes and bruising.
