Formerly a butchers the shop still has the railes going around the ceiling where the meat was hung which now make convenient hangers for clothings. If you're into digging through Charity shops to find those rare collectors items or iems of vintage clothing, Second Chance might be one that you're not so familair with. I tend to go into Charity shops with three things in mind; clothes, books and the chance that I find something out of the ordinary that catches my eye. In Second Chance I have found some great books and a few decent items of clothing, but as is ever the way, you never know what you're going to find! If you're passing the Ladypool Rd or are a commited Charity shopper intent on routing out that bargain item, Second Chance offers a new opportunity to find that lucky find!

In an era when many charity shops have become, for want of a better word, modernised, Second Chance seems to be stuck in a much earlier decade, possibly sometime in the early eighties. This applies to the look of the place, the products on sale, and the pricing. You get the feeling that Second Chance don't really price their products by referencing internet sites like Ebay as some seem to. Rather what seems to happen is items are priced via a price it cheap and sell it quick ethos. Unlike some of the charity shops in other areas such as Moseley where you might see designer products from time to time, the products could best be described as "curios". If your passing and the above appeals then it's probably worth a look for no other reason than novelty value, and charity shop addicts might want to make a special trip for a dose of genuine character.

Cant remember their prices now but from what i can remember its very reasonable, thats age coming in to play by the way!! So its just before or after Oxfam depending on which way you walk down/up hertford street. Its kind of in a corner and looks quite dark from the outside. Friednly staff and loads of choice make it an ideal place to go for trainers and things! Definatley one not to miss. I think people have avoided it in the past due to its location and kind of charitable presence. Its not 2nd stuff but all brand new!

This branch of PDSA charity shop is located on Hawthorne Road in Kingstanding and is one of the…read morebest charity shops in the area I think. It's not the tidiest shop I've ever been in, but there are some real gems to be found if you're prepared to rummage and the prices are excellent! The shop is laid out very higgledy piggledy but this is partly because it's such a small shop and they want to obviously get as much stuff in it as possible. The selection of ladies clothes is excellent and I always find something to buy whenever I go in. The sizes are always mixed up and not clearly marked, but again it's worth having a sort through the clothes because they generally have a good range of sizes in most of the items. Clothes are grouped in dresses, tops, trousers, tracksuits etc but again garments are often in the wrong place so you really do have to have a proper look around. The mens selection is usually rubbish, but mens clothes are so cheap to buy brand new these days (unlike womens clothes!) that I wouldn't really buy my fella anything from any charity shop unless it was something special. There is a small range of childrens clothes, mainly baby clothes but these are usually in near perfect condition so I often buy my seventeen month old daughter bits and pieces from PDSA. My recent bargain was five Next tops for her which only cost 75p each and two of them were brand new as they still had the tags on. There is sometimes somthing for my nine year old, but not often as the shop seems to stock mainly younger childrens clothes. I'm lucky I have girls' because the selection for lads is nowhere near as good, males just are not lucky in this shop at all! I always browse the books in PDSA and usually buy a couple as they are well priced at 75p - 99p for a paperback, there are always lots of books to choose from from older dusty tomes to brand new thrillers and chick-lit. There are the usual soft toys for sale from around 20p, but it's usually a load of rubbish so I don't tend to buy them unless my daughter is miserable in her pram and then I may get one to keep her entertained. Likewise the homewares, there isn't often anything to interest me as I find the ornaments a little old fashioned but occasionally I will see something I like and buy it for about £1. The staff are really nice in this branch of PDSA, they are usually older ladies who are happy to chat and are so polite to their customers. They always seem so grateful for your purchase, which is a breath of fresh air when you consider most shops take your money with a grunt these days! I know the way I've described parts of the PDSA sound like criticisms, but really they're not. I love rummaging through the clothes to find my size and have found some lovely surprise items, I think it's the thrill of the chase which leads me to shop in here as I never quite know where the next gem is going to come from!

I finally made it inside just the other day after stopping to get a closer look whilst passing by in a car once again. Its a hodge podge of stuff, mainly furniture items and interesting pieces from old trunks, 7" records, glass jugs and old frames. You have to have a good look as there is something hidden everywhere. Habib the owner is a guy you have to barter with and haggle hard as for some items he wants too much, prepared to make him and offer and keep looking whilst he cogitates on it. Whilst we had stopped to check out an old trunk and a wash stand we came away with NKOTB 7" records and a copper pot. Random I know but you need to visit regularly, have a rummage and a haggle.

Whilst out and about scouting I decided to give it a look for the first time. What I found is a small shop with a plethora of secondhand wares spilling out onto the pavement in front. There's usually a few bits of furniture, wooden chairs and the like out there. Out of Stirchley's secondhand stores, Bits and Pieces seems to be the one to go to for furniture. However there's plenty of other bargains to be hand, which will be trash or treasure depending on your point of view. I wouldn't particularly advise anyone to make a special visit here but if you like these sorts of shops, it's worth a look, and junk fanatics can always combine it with a trip to the other secondhand shops in Sitrchley.

My vintage furniture addiction was really wanted to by lots of things but as i was out and about with a friend i resisted the urge to pick up a Lloyd Loom storage stool for a fiver and they had some dressing table gems and sideboards too. If you need to furnish a house or flat cheap, or you like your vintage furniture then always check these places before venturing onto ebay or more expensive retro retailers. You'll be able to get a quality piece of furniture for a fraction of the price and it will last you longer as well, oh yeah and the money goes to charity. Lots of feel good factor in one place.
