They seem to take good care of the cd and dvd collection. There's usually some extra stuff going on at the library. They have a huge community bulletin board of events. Every 2-3 months they host a blood drive, and there is always a craft and a scavenger hunt available for kids. With your library card you also get a limited membership to Hoopla and Kanopy, for digital resources. There is an automatic renewal if no one has reserved the item and a generous grace period.

They also hold many events here. Check out the local paper or online to find the recent events being held. If you can't find a specific book, ask. I like to visit libraries…read morewhen I'm visiting a new-to-me town, so it was fortuitous that I happened to need to use the john at the same time that I saw the Valparaiso Public Library in the distance. I'm happy to report that the restrooms are clean! And the restrooms are close to the entrance! (Whew!) But more importantly, this library has books. And movies! And magazines! (Remember those?) And it has nice places to lounge and read or work. I posted up at one of those nice places for a while with my laptop, in a quiet nook off in the corner with barstool seating. This particular nook had big windows and plants on the windowsill, which was nice. I was able to connect to the free wifi, and plug my laptop into the library electrical juice. The second floor is mostly the children's floor, but there's also a genealogy center up there, too. The children's / youth area has some fun things to play with, plus computers, games, and, of course, children's and YA books. It's a cozy little place just for kids. This library isn't huge, and it's probably due for an update, but it's a great little library right in downtown Valpo.

Although all the staff were busy, the bright colors in the stairwell made it easy to see the way to the kids' area. Upstairs, there are tons of books, toys, and even a craft station. When we visited, the craft was decorating crayons. The crayons from other kids adorned the walls, and it was so cool to be able to leave our mark while we were traveling from Michigan. We loved all the toys in the play kitchen, but I felt guilty that my son was over there because it was right next to the reading area. So, as other parents were quietly reading to their kids, my little guy was whipping up a 5 course meal with plastic food and utensils. He loved it so much that I couldn't pull him away, so I wish it was a little more separated from the quiet area so kids in both spots can get the most out of their experiences. There are restrooms right next to the play area and an elevator in addition to the stairs. Overall, a great place to hang out with littles on a hot day!

Something about cracking open a good book gives me the same kind of high that others get from running or smoking crack. I might be biased because the Kouts Public Library is where I really learned to develop my love for reading but I think it is one of the best libraries that I have ever been inside. Granted, it will never be as awe-striking as the San Francisco Public Library (where City of Angels was filmed) or the Los Angeles Public Library which is story after story (no pun intended) of wonderment. It is, however, exactly what a library should be. It's filled with areas to sit and read. It's full of light. And it's a beautiful structure. Oh, and it has books. It has book after glorious book. It even has the Real Food Daily (see review) Cookbook which is amazing. Support your public library. Trust me. You never know what you have until it's gone. And when I lived in San Luis Obispo, California, I realized that not everyone in the world is blessed with a bountiful library.

This is a fairly large library with bright colors and a neat setup. We visited on a Saturday…read moreafternoon and our young girls had the whole children section to themselves. There were puzzle sets, stuffed animals, magnetic tiles, Legos, rocking horse, and a reasonable selection of children's books. The children's book seem a bit "disorganized" because there was one long set of shelves right next to the children's section and then two rows down would be another long set of shelves with more children books. Nonetheless, our girls had a good time and we spent at least an hour there to play and read.

What a great library! I believe it has been in it's new location since October of 2012. I took the…read moreboys for the first time a few months back and we've been going at least 3 times a months since then. The exterior of the building looks great as it should since it's new! The interior is wonderful...lot's of room and the library does not waste any of it. They have community meeting rooms, quiet room(s), an internet cafe room, independant study rooms, children's section room(s), teenage section room, and even a game system room...and plenty of computers in each section (adult, teenage, and children) of the library. I know, Wow! I'm certain that I am forgetting one or two other rooms. The library also has wi-fi throughout the building, no issues logging on. My boys love the children's section of the library. They have computers with specific software/programs for children, puzzles, legos, and nice section to sit and read. Great view of DT Crown Point from this part of the library as well. The library also hosts a number of great events for children of all ages and even adults, I know I'm looking forward to seeing Astronaut, Jerry Ross next month. The staff has also been very kind and helpful each time I've asked a question or for help. Last note...the Crown Point and Winfield libraries operate seperately from the Lake County branch libraries.

Nothing but love…read more Valpo taught me about life, love, myself, religion, the electric slide, roommates, oh...books...books too. Seriously, had a fantastic experience here. The community is warm, close-knit, and inviting; the professors are incredible; the Greek community is strong and has more depth than it probably does at bigger schools...I loved it. Also was able to get into a great law school after graduation.

Conference Review I…read morecame here for a conference in 2018. We were in the Harre Union, with some events in the chapel. The union was super shiny and seemed quite functional, and there was parking pretty close by. There was a reception one evening and the set up/bartending staff was very friendly. Dining hall was just ok, not a lot of options but what they had was good. Valparaiso as a city/town is pretty small, so nothing is really far away, which means that the university is fairly convenient to food/shopping/hotels. Wouldn't be excited to do another event here, but wouldn't be bummed either.
