One one side of the room, there are couches with coffee tables and a table for you to sit and chill, and on the other side is the actual food area of the cafe. I ordered my roll - Dark Rye with Turkey, Lettuce, Cucumber, Carrot, Capsicum, Beetroot, Avo, Cheese and S+P. I must say, they are not the friendliest of people, it wasn't even that busy for them to justify needing to rush me along. When they'd finished my roll, they put in a paper bag but because I wanted to keep it for lunch, I was actually hoping for them to wrap it in clingwrap so it could keep. Easy enough one would think? Apparently not. They made me wait whilst they served 2 other people before wrapping my sandwich up for me. I felt like a total pain but I kinda needed to wrap it so it didn't go dry so I waited. I was a bit frustrated and wasn't looking forward to eating my lunch. However, I must say, my roll was amazing.It was so delicious. I could not understand how can a roll be so tasty? This is now amongst our new favourites in Melbourne. So why only four stars? Well... the debate at our table came to the conclusion that you can't give a place 5 stars when you've only been once. The El Gringo was ridiculously good! All the different flavors on the plate combined to create one amazing dish and two happy tummies! I'm not a muesli connoisseur so I don't have much to say, but it was very fresh, light and pleasing. The French toast is the bomb-dot-com! You have to try it! You have to make sure to get a small pice of everything in one bite. It is heaven in your mouth! I will definitely return to this place and will bring all of my overseas visitors AND tell all my friends about it. I liked it that much. The owner was a little brusque - but then in a space this small she probably feels as if people are literally and metaphorically standing on her toes - but the selection is wonderful. I opted for one each of the raspberry and blueberry Danishes which were nice - not exceptional - and, it must be said, a little stingily topped with custard and berries. My one qualm is what looked to me like burnt Danish undersides, but was apparently caramelised sugar. Either way the Danes tasted a little ashen.

With a queue that often spills out the door, the ordering process has a rather regimented vibe to it (a la Seinfeld's 'Soup Nazi'), and you can almost hear the eyeballs roll (from both patrons and staff) when someone doesn't know their exact order by the time they arrive at the counter. Thus, my query of "which is better - the roast pumpkin pizza or the spinach pie?" is met with the deadpan response: "well do you like pumpkin or spinach?" I suppose I had that coming. In terms of the breads on offer, Fatto A Mano is most popular for its sourdoughs, which are free from ascorbic acid - apparently quite a selling point for the more discerning foodie than I. At $6 a loaf (around 2/3 the size of your standard Woolworths white), it would want to impress, and fortunately, Fatto A Mano does just that - reminding you what bread is meant to be. The bread is moist, hearty and full flavoured and the various pastries on offer (both sweet and savoury) are dangerously decadent. Make sure to try the Blueberry Danish and the Bread & Butter Pudding when available (though most things on offer are so rich that one of anything should satisfy). Fatto A Mano is open Mondays-Saturdays (and closed for the entire month of January).
