When selecting a funeral home I selected this one mainly because my hubby wished to be cremated and the crematory was on site. In our meeting, I was highly disappointed in the behavior of the director for several reasons. First, when I mentioned I had read all about cremations on google, his comment was that's where I made a mistake. Not only was that not called for but so very untrue. I learned so many things I did not know. I was as able to ask to see my husband which I did. He seemed surprised but let me. Then his cell phone rang and he proceeded to carry on a conversation with his wife when he should have said I'll have to call you back. Instead they talked about lunch. I ask if he needed to excuse himself. I ask to see the crematory for the purpose of cleanliness. He did take me down to it but also proceeded to take the clipboard off the wall to show me how they log who's in there and I knew this from google. You could see the clipboard so no need to remove it to the point I could read the persons name. He proceeded to open the crematory itself after I ask him please not to knowing someone's remains were in there. At that point I was absolutely devastated thinking to myself what would their family think along with the invasion of privacy. I went home thinking very hard if I wanted to have my husband picked up and taken somewhere else. I chose to stay there and discuss my concerns afterward and we did. You also have the right to view the cremation process and take part in process. I elected to see my hubby's care until the end and my son and the crematorium placed him up on the roller and I pushed the crematory button to start the process. Something I still do not regret. The crematorium assured me it would not be opened until his remains were removed. When I picked up his remains they were in a black box where the lid did not even fit securely. It kept coming off. It had to be taped shut. I special ordered his urn so I elected to move him over myself at home once it came in. I will say the response time to the Bethany House was incredible. And he was able to get the casket I picked out from Montgomery before the next morning and my husband looked at peace in it. I was very satisfied with the great job they did preparing him. And the director did apologize although he also made excuses along the way. So off to a rocky start but all worked out in the end. A year ago I would have rated them a 1. I do think this is probably an amazing place. Everyone else couldn't have been more respectful. Hopefully the director and his wife learned a few things during my journey.

Since the Higgins' acquired the funeral home in 2020, things have changed. It is more like it was prior to the period in which Carriage Services owned it (1998 - 2019). It's now like it was on the days of yore. During our last usage, the Higgens were more concerned for our needs (and some were a bit eccentric). The prior corporate owners were more concerned about payment. Higgins at Hunter-Allen-Myhand is more concerned about meeting the needs and well-being of the family. Pricewise, we noticed they had become more affordable since leaving corporate ownership. We basically copied a family funeral from nine years earlier. The cost dropped (and we used the same casket, vault, etc.). They are, compared to the chain funeral homes in LaGrange, a better bargain. The Higgins live in LaGrange and are a part of the community. They work to meet the needs of the families using the funeral home.

The land size is big enough for a nice stroll--the trees provide ample shade if the temperature is on the warmer side. What I liked most were the little plaques next to select headstones. They had interesting tidbits about the person (or persons) buried in that area. The cemetery is open from sun up to sun down. Unfortunately, parking is a little tough. I get the feeling that students from the university (which is a stone's throw away) park their cars around the cemetery and then walk to campus. Nevertheless, once you get a spot there isn't a meter(etc.), so that's a nice trade off. I definitely recommend stopping by the cemetery.

Upon arriving on my scooter,I was scolded for parking in a parking spot by one of the elder white lady employees who instructed me to park on the side walk saying "move your scooter up here (pointing to the sidewalk) and not in a parking spot. I greeted her repeatedly until she caught on that I wasn't going to follow any instruction until I received an appropriate greeting. Upon entering, the office space will filled with 10 ppl at one time in the lobby, no chair space. I had to wait in a separate room. White ladies referring to a group of blacks as "this one" and "that one". Lol On the plus side, it was nice and cold in there from being out in the hot sun and I got my finger print done. As it is understood, Max is very handy and knowledgeable with repairing ATV's but lacks any skill with lawnmowers or tractors. After over 5 weeks of excuses, no shows and an overall lack of integrity, I wouldn't leave a can opener for repair here. Several failed attempts have been made to replace a belt and a pulley system, further damaging the unit that is less that 3 years old with fewer than 50 hours. The response has resulted in the outfit denying any involvement in further damage to the equipment that was brought on and refusal to correct the issue or refund for labor costs. Don't waste your time!

The only thing I might say is carts seem limited, but it may have been they were somewhere else and just not by the door I used. I didn't check, I had what I needed and the storage never seems so busy that I had to wait for carts. Overall a good decision to move to this storage company.
