The Battle sites is what I first went to view and yeah it hits you hard at all of the losses we had. Then I went to the Appomattox Court House and toured the grounds. Amazing place to take your kids there and to hear all of the History that we don't want to lose. To me, it was an Honor to walk where Victory for our Soldiers and our Country. I would for sure drive another 15 hours from Louisiana to go and Tour the grounds again.

Parking is plentiful and easy to access. When you get to the settlement where the houses are, you encounter beautifully preserved homes that are set up as they would have been during the war. Unlike other battlefields that feel oppressive with death, Appomattox feels like hope for me. Maybe it's my imagination -especially because people died here too, but the way the two generals conducted themselves went a long way in restoring peace. It's a beautiful place to spend an afternoon.

The place is pretty easy to find and parkinng was definitely not the worst. The Good: This is the first time in my life when I went to a courthouse and it was a fairly enjoyable experience. Its spacious on the inside, well kept, secure, and modern. The most unexpected thing there was that everyone was really friendly and helpful. Not one person there from the security to the parking garage attendant seemed disgruntled. I went there to have my fingerprints taken and I had made an appointment online. Not only was the lady at the window and the lady who did my prints very friendly, but I was actually seen on time! Unbelievable. Friendly staff AND timely service at a government facility? That's new to me. If you have a choice of courthouses in the area, I would recommend this one. Plus some nice local shops are close by if yo u have to wait for someone or something, you can grab a nice coffee or whatever. The Bad: You have yo pay for parking. $2 for the first hour and $1 for every additional hour up to $10 max.

It is one the fifth oldest in North Carolina and one of the very few antebellum courthouses that is still used for judicial purposes. This present building was completed in 1840 with additions added in 1891 and 1937. Extensive renovations were completed in 1988, coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the keystone over the main entrance to the courthouse, dated July 4, 1838. It is a two story H-shaped building made of red brick in a Greek Revisal style. It has a polygonal cupola with a domed room and is a simply stunning structure. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. If you're wandering around downtown Oxford, you can't / shouldn't miss it. Johnston County's Courthouse was completed in 1921 and is a three-story frame building in the…read moreClassical Revival style. It has a four column portico and a stone balustrade at the roofline. There is recessed entrance a large vertical windows on the second and third stories. The roof line is flat. In the interior, the main courtroom is located on the third story and has a balcony on the rear side. Johnston County was formed in 1746 and Clayton was selected as the county seat with the county's first courthouse. The seat was moved to Smithfield in 1771 and the new courthouse was built here. A third courthouse was built in 1786 and then a fourth in 1843. This one is the fifth and is considered "the old courthouse" as the current one was built in the 1980s. There is a Civil War marker on the front steps - General William T Sherman used the 1771 courthouse as his headquarters on his march toward Raleigh. On April 12th 1865 Sherman received a telegram from General Ulysses S Grant informing him of General Robert E Lee's surrender at Appomattox while in Smithfield. There is also a WWI memorial with a "doughboy" holding his rifle "In memory of the illustrious dead of Johnston County who died in the Great World War 1917-1919" with a list of names. They can't give my stepson a speedy trial and now they're trying to take my bond money without cause. I want to curse so bad right now.

Never thought I'd be writing a review about a courthouse but here we are…read more I had the privilege of sitting in the courtroom of Judge Pendergrass for a traffic violation. With everything going on in the world and people losing faith in our justice system my experience today gave me a little faith in humanity. Judge Pendergrass is the kindest, most disarming and fair judge I have ever seen, onscreen or off. Many in the room were nervous, tense before walking up to the podium. Even if they were handed heavy fines or judgement, they walked away relieved. He speaks to everyone with kindness and asks about their lives. One man had a one year old son and he talked to him about how exciting it must be sharing their first Christmas. He gave him extra time to pay off his ticket so he could get something nice for his son. At a stressful moment in everyone's lives, the demeanor of this judge is hopeful and heartwarming. Thanks for reinstalling some faith in our justice system. Judge Pendergrass truly is honorable.
