The venue itself is gorgeous - the kind of place you would find tucked away in Fitzroy North. A fireplace, a cute but warm courtyard and the kind of lighting/atmosphere that makes everyone look sexy (think a LOT of candles). We started with a few cocktails because YOLO. I went with a Venice (basically an Aperol Spritz without the spritz) while my partner went with a classic Dark and Stormy. Both were delish however took just a touch to long to get to our table. Then came the pizzas. Coffin Sally pretty much only do pizzas. It kind of reminds me of what Bar Fred used to be like five years ago or what Bimbos is still trying to do. The pizzas LOOKED gorgeous, beautifully presented and came out to our table quick as a flash, however the flavour just wasn't there. Don't get me wrong, they were tasty, but they were a bit like a male model - very pretty, but not a lot of substance. While Coffin Sally definitely stands out against the Port Fairy backdrop (as there is literally nothing else like it in this gorgeous little town), don't head there expecting the kind of gourmet fare you might find back home.

The one sheet pizza menu was tucked away in the back of the folder but this vibrant anomaly of the main street should be front and centre as it is easily the best eat on the street. It's pizza done well. Pizza done simply. There's a selection of 10-11 pizzas and all range from $14 - $17. You can order a gluten free base for $4 extra. You watch the pizza made in front of you and the owner, on appearances alone, could easily be a retired 'Surfer Dude' bringing a new level of cool to Port Fairy. We ordered the garlic pizza (delicious without being too garlicky) and the 'Proscuitto' - proscuitto, buffalo mozzerella and fresh basil. It was everything I was craving before I knew it. Should I be passing through Port Fairy again I'll be hoping Coffin Sally (I still don't know the origin of the name) has made it in this country town and led the way for a few more "bang on trend" venues to have also opened their doors.

Well after visiting Kermond's, I do not feel like I have now had the best burger in the world, but nevertheless the burgers are good. The one thing that I learned quickly about Australia during this visit is that they like to put beets or "beetroot" on their burgers, which gives the burger an awfully sweet taste. Honestly, not particularly my favorite thing, and something I learned from here out while traveling through the area to have them hold the beet. Nonetheless, the burger itself was good as were the "chips." Grabbed a shake as well which was pretty thick all things considered, but still tasty and worth trying.

As we walked up, we could smell the bay from the steps. It immediately put us in a seafood kinda mood. The menu was diverse and they had the local flare. Stepping in, we asked the server if they were closed -- and alas -- she told us that they had just closed for the night. Well, we were disappointed. As we were walking away, the manager ran out the door and said "please come in! We'll stay open for you!!" It was music to our ears! I ordered a glass of local white wine and my husband had a locally brewed beer. The prices for alcohol are determined by taxes, so they don't control them. Also keep in mind that they pay their servers a livable wage, so the costs of restaurant food reflects that. This was definitely a "higher end" establishment though with mains starting at around $20. The restaurant is nicely appointed and modern, very clean. There's a gift shop next door that looked nice, although closed after 8 pm. They're situated right on the bay and it would be an incredible view during daylight. We first ordered the abalone for the appetizer (entree). I ordered the seafood plate and my husband ordered the scotch filet. The seafood was incredibly fresh -- and I got to try a yabbie!! Lots of large prawns, scallops, calamari. The fish and chips were fresh and juicy. The filet was cooked to perfection. We had another glass of wine and chatted with the waitress for a while. The views from Pippies are breathtaking and the decor inside is clean, crisp and very modern. I ordered the gnocchi as an entree which took a while to come out and was a bit chewy. But the main was delicious. A good size for me but someone else might need sides or a dinner partner who will share their leftovers (probably one of the contributing reasons to why my partner stays around and takes me out to dinner). Unfortunately only thing letting this place down was the chewy gnocchi.
