Yelp told me, my friends told me, strangers told me: the place to be in Port Fairy was Coffin Sally. So along we went, expectations high, bellies empty and thirst at it's maximum. The venue itself is gorgeous - the kind of place you would find tucked away in Fitzroy North. A fireplace, a cute but warm courtyard and the kind of lighting/atmosphere that makes everyone look sexy (think a LOT of candles). We started with a few cocktails because YOLO. I went with a Venice (basically an Aperol Spritz without the spritz) while my partner went with a classic Dark and Stormy. Both were delish however took just a touch to long to get to our table. Then came the pizzas. Coffin Sally pretty much only do pizzas. It kind of reminds me of what Bar Fred used to be like five years ago or what Bimbos is still trying to do. The pizzas LOOKED gorgeous, beautifully presented and came out to our table quick as a flash, however the flavour just wasn't there. Don't get me wrong, they were tasty, but they were a bit like a male model - very pretty, but not a lot of substance. While Coffin Sally definitely stands out against the Port Fairy backdrop (as there is literally nothing else like it in this gorgeous little town), don't head there expecting the kind of gourmet fare you might find back home. read more

I was craving something more than below average cafe and bistro fare when on our last night in Port Fairy we stumbled upon Coffin Sally's menu in our cottage's info folder. The one sheet pizza menu was tucked away in the back of the folder but this vibrant anomaly of the main street should be front and centre as it is easily the best eat on the street. It's pizza done well. Pizza done simply. There's a selection of 10-11 pizzas and all range from $14 - $17. You can order a gluten free base for $4 extra. You watch the pizza made in front of you and the owner, on appearances alone, could easily be a retired 'Surfer Dude' bringing a new level of cool to Port Fairy. We ordered the garlic pizza (delicious without being too garlicky) and the 'Proscuitto' - proscuitto, buffalo mozzerella and fresh basil. It was everything I was craving before I knew it. Should I be passing through Port Fairy again I'll be hoping Coffin Sally (I still don't know the origin of the name) has made it in this country town and led the way for a few more "bang on trend" venues to have also opened their doors. read more

After reading the good reviews, we thought we would give it a go. It was a just night and we asked for our pizzas to be take away. They told is it would be 40 minutes; it seemed like a long time bug at least we were warned. We wanted in the car outside. We waited 40, 50, 60, 70 minutes and still nothing. After an hour and 20 of wait we went it to complain, the staff seemed completely lost and our pizzas were just there, kind of forgotten. We got a little apology for the wait / but after double the time I expected a lot more. My pizza (caprociosa) was OK but my husband really liked his (prosciutto). Will probably not go there again. read more

It's kinda one of those places that you really don't want to talk about because it's that good, and if too many people know it's there it'll ruin it. Not just the best place I've ever been to in country Victoria, but probably the best place I've been to in country anywhere. There's so much to say about this place, and it's all positive. First thing we noticed was more than one vegetarian option. And they were all delicious, this is something that's hard to find in Melbourne let alone on Victoria's South Western coast. The next major positive that needs to be discussed is beer. Yes, there are places that have a longer beer list, but there are few that have such a bizarre range that runs all the way up to an aged Belgian dark ale only available in a 3 litre magnum. The best thing about this particular 3 litre "stubby" is that it's delicious. The third, and probably most important massive positive is the atmosphere. At 9pm on the last night of a long weekend this place had all the positive, feel good vibes of the best inner city small bars. It's all down to the location, the hidden entrance, the spooky back story, the warm and weird interior, and most importantly the incredible staff. I can't recommend enough, when you're in country Victoria, find Port Fairy. Once there, find the little pizza shop with the little dark door beside it. Go in. read more

The pizza, the cocktails, the staff, the atmosphere. Everything about this place is top quality If there's one recommendation I'd make, it would be to book in advance. My wife and I went at around 6pm on a Saturday and were lucky enough to snag a table for two, but we saw lots of walk ins turned away because the place was full. There is a great selection of pizzas available which include the varieties you'd expect, as well lots of other delicious combinations. We had a roast potato pizza and a "spinner" roast pumpkin, pine nuts, feta and spinach - both were divine. Pro tip: add caramelised onion to the spinner The quality of the cocktails is also great, and the bar looks spectacular. The storefront definitely does not bely the interior. After making our reservation through the kitchen, and being told entrance to the actual restaurant was through a side door, we were rightly skeptical. However, we arrived that night to a gorgeous interior, with great music, and an open fire. The 11", delicious, thin crust pizza had generous toppings that ranged from the "Oopsie Daisy" - goats cheese, pumpkin and rocket - to the "Pig Lover" - ham, bacon and chorizo. The wine list was extensive and very much locally orientated. This place would easily fit in amongst the hip Melbourne bar-scene. I loved this place when I was in Port Fairy. They were just opening and at that time their existence was spartan. With that said, I was always impressed with the options and the menu. The staff was always incredibly helpful with decision making and recommending things that I should try. I'm entirely epicurious but I know what I like so I get stuck in a rut some times. The atmosphere in Port Fairy is wonderful and they've done well to make outdoor seating possible and what essentially is a standing room only business. I can't wait until I can visit these folks again and have one of their great Pizzas! read more

Hidden gem tucked away on the Main Street in port fairy. Great atmosphere due to low lighting and rustic furniture. Extensive list of pizzas on the menu to suit many appetites. My partner loved his garlic pizza and half pig half cappricciosa (a rarity for gourmet pizzas) I ordered half prosciutto half pear, the young boy brought over a half potato half pear, he then came back and said they were basically the same pizza and was I happy with the chef adding prosciutto and basil. That was fine by me (as long as I get my prosciutto and fresh basil I'm happy) the pizzas were lovely and fresh, based were delicious too. Nothing like coffin Sally in port fairy. Service isn't great and they made several mistakes from forgetting about our reservation, forgetting our food and eventually bringing us the wrong food which at that point we couldn't be bothered bringing it up anymore. One wait staff was apologetic and worked to make up for the mistakes, another member of staff was quite rude and didn't do anything to fix it up, which was disappointing. The pizzas are amazing though, maybe just get it to take away. read more
