Shortly before 8pm, there was a steady line of four or five people waiting to get takeway. Like…read moremany other warungs in Amstersdam, the food is made in advance and reheated in the microwave. I think many Indonesian dishes are not hurt by this, and especially rendang benefits from at least a day of maturing. The little lady behind the counter was friendly and efficient, quickly portioning food and using all four microwaves. Again I got the Ramas menu (€8,60) and I substituted bami for nasi, which costs €0,60 extra. I also noticed that they had Sambal Ikan (€3.00), so I added that to my order. There are only a couple tables to sit at, fortunately I was planning to take my food home and eat it later anyway.
When I finally got around to eating it, I quickly noticed that it was searing my mouth! That's perfect for me, who uses El Yucateco hot sauce liberally on my eggs in the morning; definitely avoid the items marked as spicy if you can't take the heat. Again, I regretted getting bami and should have gotten nasi kuning instead. It costs the same and is more bland so it goes well with the other salty sides. Sambal Ikan turned out to be mackerel, which I love! And this was no exception. The oily fish went perfectly with the spicy sauce, and I was given a lot of it! I also got spicy eggplant, spicy egg, spicy tempe, and spicy green beans. Hooo~ my mouth was on fire afterwards. I can see why the place is so popular!
