This was our first time in Amsterdam, and we had to try Indonesian food. We heard this spot has some of the best authentic Indo food in the city, and it did not disappoint. We were staying nearby and decided to walk in. It was packed inside, so we sat outside, didn't mind the cold since they provided heat lamps. Cozy enough! We ordered the Indonesian plate, beef rendang, spicy mackerel, and chicken satay. Everything was delicious. The Indonesian plate is a must eat! little bit of everything, mixed together, and so flavorful. The rendang was rich and tender, the mackerel had a great kick, and the satay was perfectly cooked. Enjoyed the laid back vibes and home-cooked taste of the Indonesian food. I got the Indonesian Platter (?) -- cant exactly recall the name and a bottle of a local trippel beer. The rice platter came with three kinds of meat: some soy braised pork, a coconut milk chicken dish, and beef rendang along with some rice, green beans and cucumber and onion pickle. The platter was topped with a rice cracker. Everything tasted home-made and was tasty. Food was fairly priced for near central Amsterdam and the server tending bar (I'm guessing the owner?) asked if everything was alright, which was nice for European service! After a long bike ride around Amsterdam, we decided to stop here on our way back from our apartment. And it was a good choice that we did. Another simple review...we received great service right away when arriving. We received two menus. One in American and one in Dutch. Our servers were extremely helpful with the menu, personable, and professional . Our drinks came out rather fast. We ordered cocktails and the presentation was nice, but the taste was even better. Our food didn't take too long to come out and didn't take too fast either. Now, for our food, yes, presentation was beautiful! And the food was absolutely delicious and came out rather hot. The mix of the flavors was crazy good. SO much different flavors that went together perfectly. The ambiance is nice. We sat outside, so not really sure about inside. But, we enjoyed the fresh air and watching the bikers yell at each other when they cut each other off. Lol. Smh. As far as pricing. Not expensive at all. And you get plenty food! This is an excellent spot for traditional Indonesian cuisine. We sat outside on a beautiful day and enjoyed seeing people riding their bikes by and walking the dogs. Talk about keeping secrets from the tourists... If you like Indonesian food, this place is IT! My sweetheart found Café Kadijk in the Lonely Planet Guide, and we decided to have a go at it - especially since we're both turned off by the typical tourist places, whether for food, lodging or whatever. We much prefer to go to the local favorites. I tried Yelping them, but... I don't speak Dutch! Bummer. Hopefully by the next time I get out here, I'll do better in that regard. But for those of you that are in a similar situation, know that they do have some "English" menus, and most of the wait staff are also conversant and very willing to help. Café Kadijk has a decent selection of beers. I had a La Chouffe, and later a Palm. While both were good, they are not the focus of this review... the FOOD is! I had the saté ajam (a kabob of chicken with a peanut sauce - both spicy and sweet) - and it rocked! It came with gato-gato (al dente Indonesian vegetables with crunchy noodles), shrimp cracker and rice. I won't say it set my world on fire, but it was one of my top two meals in Amsterdam! My sweetheart had the Indisch Bordje (mini-rijsttafel) which featured three different selections (out of perhaps eight or nine items to choose from), along with gato-gato and rice. She chose two different styles of beef and another of spicy chicken. As always we shared our food, and I really, really enjoyed it all. This restaurant is on the commuter path on the way to the exurbs, and so it is frequented mainly by the locals. As such, we enjoyed sharing a table and spirited conversation with same, well into the evening. (...and since it didn't get dark until almost 11 pm, evening really snuck up on us!) If there was any down side to this place, it was the seating - which is almost exclusively outdoors, so if the weather doesn't cooperate, well... you get the idea. Also, the cigarette smoke is ubiquitous. Not a fault of this place, mind you, it's just a fact of life on this side of the pond. Bottom line: Café Kadijk is high on our "must do" places next time we come to Amsterdam! read more

Came here off a recommendation of a local and it didn't disappoint! Very casual and cute little cafe. It didn't hurt that it was pretty close to our hotel. The food was VERY good. I will say the menu is fairly small. We both had satay - I had chicken and my dining partner had lamb. Both were good though the lamb was a bit spicier. I thought the food was delicious especially the peanut sauce and dinner came with a shrimp chip (that's what we call them in Hawaii. Might be different in AMS). I found this place when I was walking home from the zoo and was overcome by the delicious smells wafting from their kitchen. Even though it was Friday evening, me and my children were able to get a seat at a bench outside and were served quickly. I had the beef stew, which was spicy and delicious. It tasted just like shrimp Penang that I've had in thai restaurants. My husband had the chicken satay, which I did not care for. I am used to a sweeter version of peanut sauce and this peanut sauce was a little bit bitter. Maybe that is what the authentic version tastes like? I don't know. My 4-year old really liked the homemade shrimp crackers, a.k.a. kroepoek. They were a little bit bigger than average, and also not as fluffy and crispy, but this might also be because I'm guessing they were homemade. We sat outside and watched the nearby bridges go up and down, so that was neat. The only downside was it was rather windy so our food cooled down quickly. Also the portions are kind of small for dishes that are around €18 each, so if I had to change anything, I would say give us more food! More! More! read more

But for me the food was just mediocre: meatballs and beef/chicken/lamb dishes on the dry side, the sauces not particularly tasty. This place is AMAZING. So good. Found it on Yelp after going to the microbe museum because it was nearby, and it was a great choice. No wait -- we got right in with 7 people. There's limited seating; some outdoor tables and 3-4 tables inside, and it was pretty full but not so full that we couldn't be seated. The waitress was super nice and answered all our annoying questions. This is also the first place in Amsterdam where they gave us tap water and didn't charge us for bottled water which is big! Also, the food was so, so, so good. I got the satay tofu and tempeh, which had some vegetables and rice with it and peanut sauce that was perfect. Cafe Kadijk features in every trip to Amsterdam for me. They serve an Indonesian menu and great for snacks and full meals. My favourite is the Gado-Gado. On sunday afternoon we wanted to have some good asian food, so found this restaurant in the internet and decided to try out some indonesian food. It is a small venue, typical dutch one with the hight ceiling, but very cozy, sitting upstairs with a good view to the bar. They also have a pub garden, but it was a little bit to cold this day to be seated outside. At the beginning I was a little bit confused, because there didn't work any indonesian looking guy, but the food was really good. I liked the peanut sauce very much. Decided to try some non-local (Dutch) but historically localised food so went to Cafe Kadijk in the hope that it had good food and was not too touristy (a bit of a selfish request as we are tourists anyway). We scored very high on the good food and good service but the non touristy thing is a bit of a loss - and we suspect that is the case for anywhere that, deservedly, scores as well as this place does on Yelp. Nice ambiance - albeit quite a small place - cosy and welcoming from the second we stepped thru the door. The service throughout was very prompt and attentive without being smothering so a nice balance. The food is truly authentic Indonesian staples. Spicy, flavorful and nicely presented. Just remember those chillis are REAL and not some fake based on chopped up bell peppers. We started by sharing the Tofu and Tempeh skewers ... PLENTY for two as an appetiser. Very tasty, great sauce and nice tender, moist Tempeh. Great job. Then the Beef Rendang and the Indonesian Mackerel. Both very tasty and generous portions when you take into account the sides and rice. Ohh and a nice selection of beers so most people inclined to drink beer will find something to suit. A grump free experience so a well deserved 5 stars! We'd definitely revisit when back in Amsterdam. read more

I'm under the impression that the Dutch have a limited native cuisine so many of Amsterdam's restaurants are ethnic including the number of Indonesian restaurants given the centuries old relationship between the Netherlands and Indonesia. Thus, we selected Café Kadijk. This casual, well-worn and small restaurant well north east of the craziness of the Red Light District does not take reservations. We arrived as the place was filling to capacity with locals at 1700 hours. I don't know, maybe they were having a bad or stressful day. Or maybe it was just us, maybe they did not like the look of us. We did not get greeted (which is fine) and when I said "hello" the waiter did not respond or even look at us. One of the waitresses did look at us and we asked if we could order for take out.
