Washington Park (in Oregon) is way more than a park -- it's mini attractions with the park - residential area. So, within the "park", there's Oregon Zoo, Portland Japanese Garden, Hoyt Arboretum, International Rose Test Garden, and Children's Museum -- all require admission feee. The park and trails are free. Washington Park is hands-down one of the most incredible urban parks but I only had time to check out Portland Japanese Garden (separate review). I did walk the perimeter of the Hoyt ArboretumFor hikers and nature lovers, this is a gem.Washington Park has a free shuttle that loops around all the major attractions (seasonal). Parking can be a little tricky during peak times, so plan ahead or take public transit. The cool thing is getting around Washington Park -- there's free shuttle that's takes you to all these places within the park so you don't have to stress about limiting parking spots. Yelp Tip:There are plenty of quiet spots with tables and open lawns to relax between visits -- so do a picnic. Huge forested park on the west side of the city. It's near our hotel and always beautiful. Trails and rose garden make this special. Places for kids to Play and families to picnic. Also, the new water retention pond is nearly finished and will provide a unique place for people enjoy the sounds of water and all for practical purposes while being aesthetically pleasing. It was our first visit to this iconic park and we were not disappointed. We didn't have a full day to explore everything that we certainly enjoyed Rose Garden, as well as the wonderful shuttle driver who gave us a very nicely, guided informal tour all the way up from the parking area by the zoo to the dairy top by the rose garden, including very interesting facts about the park and the local neighborhood surrounding the park. As it was late April, there were not a lot of roses yet in bloom, but it was still nice to see the garden and all the other sites in the park most of which will have to wait for our next visit. read more

This park is absolutely beautiful and especially in the summer when the roses are in bloom. We have a zoo membership so my son and I go all the time. If you do go in summer it really any warm day it will be absolutely packed and parking will be a nightmare. The Japanese tea gardens are stunning and well worth it. I loved this park! It was so convenient that there was a street car that can take you all the way from Downtown Portland into the park. Getting off at the park, my friend and I didn't know where to begin as the park was huge. Thankfully, there were staff there that were able to guide us and they even gave us a map and pointed us to the direction of the hikes. The hiking was great! It was amazing to see that different tree formations, nature, and overlooks. I loved seeing the tall redwood trees. The park also seemed well maintained and it was easy to navigate through it. I also like how there were markers scattered throughout the park, so you won't get lost. The park was huge and there's something for everyone! From the Japanese Gardens to the Pittock Mansion, I love how everything's connected. A must for sure for anyone visiting Portland. read more

Such a gem in the heart of Portland! This place has everything - garden, trails, museum, mini zoo - you name it. It visited while in town and was blown away by how much there is to explore. The Rose Garden was stunning, and the Japanese Garden was so peaceful. There is also a free shuttle that makes getting around easy, whic is great because parking can be little tough. Pretty big park that felt like a forest within a city with a good amount of hiking trails to get around. I used public transportation to get to the Oregon Zoo and then used the Wildwood trail to get from there to the Portland Japanese Garden. The trail was well marked and flat for the most part. Located on the edge of the city, when you are at Washington Park you feel miles away! Other than the stunning city views from the International Rose Garden area, when you wander the other areas you are immersed in nature. As you walk the multitude of trails that meander through the forest you are surrounded in lush green and encounter incredible vistas along the way. With 400 hundred acres containing dozens of attractions and 100 miles of trails, you can visit over and over again. The entire park, including the trails and pathways, are well maintained, well marked and you can hike all year round. Some of the trails do get slippery in the rainy weather so be observant. There are trails for all levels, and lots of inclines so you definitely get your hear rate up! But Washington Park is more than just hiking trails. It's the home of the incredibly beautiful Japanese Garden where you can get lost in the peace, zen and tranquility. Evwryone snaps a pic of that iconic tree with the intricate twists and turns of it's branches, illuminated in shades of green in the springtime and ablaze in color in the fall, In the spring the huge rhododendron bushes and trees of every color line the pathways. Some of the blooms are twice the size of my head! In mid to late June the International Rose Garden is a flower lovers paradise with roses of every type, color and scent. It is truly an incredible sight to take in, so vibrant and fragrant. I often pack a picnic and head there in the evening to walk around, take photographers in the last hour of sunlight and then enjoy a meal. The amphitheater attracts picnickers and people who just want to sit and read or relax. And when there are concerts, it gets full. Definitely put attending a concert here on your bucket list! You can hike to the Hoyt Aboretum featuring over 2300 s pieces of trees and fauna. There is parking righ in front of the Aboretum, too. You can hike to or drive up to Pittock Mansion for more beautiful vistas and to take in the history. There are several memorials you can visit throughout the Park - the Oregon Holocaust Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans of Oregon Memorial, and the Sacajawea Memorial - all free. There are tennis courts that are lit up at night, an area behind the courts towards the rose garden with lots of picnic tables in the shade and a restroom. A playground for the kids is located by the zoo. It's filled with swings and slides and a sand pit with picnic tables and a restroom nearby. There is even an archery range! And of course, the Oregon Zoo which deserves it own review. There are parking areas throughout but you can also take the Max train which is super easy. This is how I arrive when attending concerts at the Zoo. Public transportation that goes between many of the attractions making it super easy to get around. While the park is free to enter, some of the parking requires payment; you can download the app which is handy if you want to extend your time. Some areas, like the gravel lot near the archery range, is free. So read the signs! Same goes for attractions. The Japanese Garden has a fee and you need to reserve and buy tickets online. The Zoo also has a fee. Best to visit the website (explorewashingtonpark.org/explore/attractions) for specifics. Washington Park is great for families, groups, couples, singles and it's dog friendly! Beautiful park with a multitude of intertwining trails making it the perfect spot for hikers of all levels. It's a very easy spot to get a range of hikes in, from short 20-30 minute hike to a 2+ hour hike, you can make as little or as much as you want from the adventure. We arrived with the intention of doing one trail but after seeing the map, and just how many there were, we decided to switch between a few of them as they intersected. Though the trails were marked very well, we missed one of our intersections and ended up on a different trail. The signage was very helpful and often times, when something was very close, gave distance in feet instead of miles. We took our new trail to the redwood deck and felt like making it longer so continued up to Pittock mansion. The trails were forested but had a nice range of scenery. We came across a bunch of different trees - a lot of which were labeled, some flowing water, some bridges, overall a really pretty spot to disconnect in the center of the city. Even though the trails were labeled, I only noticed one map the entirety of the hike. We took a picture of it so we'd be able to follow along through the park as it is such a large space. We were here post storm so there were a lot of trees down that were blocking the path and we had to climb over, this seemed to be more the case as we got closer to Pittock. read more

Portland's Washington Park contains a number of tourist attractions, including the famed International Rose Test Garden, a zoo, and museums. I will review some of the individual attractions separately. A one-time wild land first purchased by the city in 1871, it is located to the west of the city center. We could had spent the entire day exploring the park's attractions, and another strolling through the unusual gardens. The well-known International Rose Test Garden is where new varieties of roses are grown. In the city's mild climate, roses continue to flower into autumn, though the annual Rose Festival is in May and June. The Portland Japanese Garden is another all-day escape in Washington Park. It's one of the largest outside Japan and is landscaped on the grounds of an old zoo. If you're looking for a hike without going hiking, this might be the place to do it. We walked over from Salt and Straw (not the OG location across town) then up a steep hill to the park. It didn't seem far until we forgot we weren't in Florida anymore and there was a huge hill to climb. Luckily, we were just walking up the bare ski slopes behind the Overlook Hotel (aka Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood), so this wasn't terrible. This has the International Rose Test Garden, which we walked through, a pretty cool view of Mt. Hood, some tennis courts, and lots of other cool things to do. We only saw a small portion as it was later in the day and other things were closing. Not wanting to venture back too late, we caught an Uber back to the hotel in Downtown. We went on a whim and didn't realize all of the cool things here, like the Oregon Zoo, Hoyt Arboretum, Japanese Garden, and other cool things in the park. It's also close to Pittock Mansion and Witch's Castle which we almost went to for a hike. This side of town was pretty cool and I wish we would have gone earlier in the day. read more

To be clear, this review is for the park as a whole, while the constituent parts that we also visited within the park (the Hoyt Arboretum and the International Rose Test Garden) are reviewed separately. This is a sprawling park built into the hills on the northwest edge of Portland. It is easily accessed from downtown or via I-5. In addition to the attractions noted above, the park also has a Japanese Garden (which had a long line and an entrance fee of around $15 per person) as well as the Portland area zoo. We did not tour either of those places. They had a number of tennis courts near the gardens as well. The park also features at least one (probably more than one) children's playground and some memorials for some groups (veterans, etc.). The biggest issue we had with this spot was parking. We had read that it gets crowded on weekends, so we visited on a Monday afternoon. It seemed pretty crowded then too, honestly! We tried to park at the Rose Garden, but the nearest spot we could find was over 1/4 mile down the hill. You also pay to park here (either via an app or entering your license plate at a kiosk). So once we did park, we didn't want to move the car to see another area as we were not sure if we'd find another space and we'd have to pay again. The solution was to take the park shuttle bus, which runs every 20 or so minutes, I think (there are at least 2 buses making the loop). This was a great way to get from the Rose Garden to the Arboretum. Had we not already been tired after hiking there (plus prior hikes that day), it would probably have been an easy downhill 1+ mile walk back to our car. We instead rode the bus back. At least two areas of the park offer good views of mountains in the distance. If I returned here, I'd probably try to arrive in the morning in hopes of finding a better parking space. read more

Even though the weather was working against us - it was November, so we knew not to expect sunshine and warmth - we did enjoy our wanderings through this area. We took advantage of the light rail to get from our hotel to an area close-ish to the park. The added walk was a bonus for us, and gave us a chance to explore neighborhoods we wouldn't normally have seen. The walk into the park was a bit more intense than we'd expected - our path took us up a steep set of stairs and further up a winding residential street before dropping us off close to one of the park's entrances - but again, we relished that extra bit of exercise and being outdoors. Once we got to the Lewis and Clark memorial we realized: we had no idea what to do next! The park was mostly deserted, it was drizzling and cold, and there was construction happening on the other side. We did a quick review of Google Maps and headed down the slope to the Sacajawea Statue (pausing so that I could swing my old bones on the swing set, naturally). From Sacajawea, we made our way to the Chiming Fountain. Finding that to be turned off and disused, we once more consulted the map and headed towards the Oregon Holocaust Memorial up the hill. This memorial, y'all. It's not at all what we set out to visit, but I'm so glad we found it. Powerful and moving, as a memorial should be, it's also a statement of humanity and the toll hatred can take on the world. We spent a good amount of time reading the panels (some of the etchings have been smoothed away by time and weather, but most of the words are still legible) before going back the way we came and hanging a right to head up towards the rose garden. The open-air amphitheater was a nice little surprise for us. Though it was muddy and a bit treacherous, we scampered down into the bowl and took some pictures before taking in the garden. We hadn't expected many flowers - winter, you know - but were pleased to see a few pops of color mixed in with the bushes and educational signs. Our last stop was supposed to be the Japanese Garden, but by the time we hiked our way up there, we realized we were famished, frozen and tired, so we tapped. It was a nice way to spend several hours and get some exercise and fresh air in. read more

Our niece and nephews loved this little play area at Washington Park! It's just down the way from the Rose Garden, tennis courts, and Japanese Garden so it's easy to find. The kiddos had some extra energy to work put before we went into the calm zen space of the Japanese Garden. They ran, and climbed, and swung, and ran some more. True to a park in PDX this play area had many, many bridges. There isn't an entry just for the play area - so let's hype up the whole area! The Zoo rocks! The Arboretum is stellar! The Rose Garden doesn't have much to see in Winter... But Spring - Fall is great! And the Japanese Garden is absolutely beautiful. Make sure to hop onto the free shuttle and work your way all around the Park! Sadly the water fountains are all turned off so pack extra bottles of water! read more

For a person who has lived right next to the park for years , I have never really come down to writing a review . First of , its one of the best places in the city that has already a lot to offer . There are gorgeous views , hiking trails , an archery range , Japanese garden , the Roses in Rose Garden , The Hoyt arboretum, the amphitheater , playground for kids , a tennis court ,Oregon Zoo and what more -they even have public transportation till a lot of the higher spots. A good run or even walk up most roads here will have you sweating in no time as the climbs are mostly uphill. No Matter what time of the year you come here , the park is always gorgeous but it gets more welcoming on the dry summer days when you can lounge around and have a small picnic or hike around on the numerous trails .Even on rainy parts of the year , I have always seen the pathways maintained and walkable . The trails do tend to get muddy and slippery which is expected . The Park is free to enter but there is a hourly fee to park. A lot of the areas have construction going on for years and access is limited from certain points ,so watch out for those . read more

We wanted to check out the Rose Garden and the Japanese Garden...little did I know they are part of the same park. Too bad the Japanese Garden was costly. Here was my experience on the Sunday of Labor day. Parking: It is all generally street parking with meters. If you want you can also take the light rail train. Feels: Somewhere surpassed downtown you'll see these big houses, then a little further, you'll see the entrance to a huge park. I only visited the Rose Garden which was still pretty delightful with multiple roses and a theater with lots of opportunities for photo ops or just lying down. For some reason, I expected to be smothered in roses but I think that's just the overhyped millennial in me. Overall: 5 Stars for the natural sweet sights and sounds of Portland, this is your spot. I do need to check this spot out more but overall it was a great experience. TL;DR Tips: * For those trying to take those cute IG Pics, I'd say come in the early summer time. read more

I passed through this park on a long hike that took me past the zoo, up to council crest and back downtown through the SW hill neighborhoods. Washington Park is gorgeous, even today - a dark, cold, misting kinda day that the sun can't break through on. Elegant pine trees, soft forest floors, handicap accessible paths as well as muddy, tree root covered trails. There is a gorgeous green grass covered amphitheatre that made my heart ache for better times. I look forward to being here with my neighbors next year. The rose test garden is here, beautifully designed and with many subtle features. I plan to return again and again. I was using the AllTrails app, and my route was the "downtown to council crest" hike. My path (see photo) took me up to the zoo, the Vietam Veteran Memorial the Holocaust Memorial, and then over the ridge toward Marquam. It had some vigorous uphills and a few switchbacks. I had to dart across the highway 26 on ramp at one point. For real, the trailhead is right next to the on ramp. Good times. The views from the Goose Hollow neighborhood were dramatic! It was rainy and muddy and I enjoyed every step. read more

Washington Park is the best park that I have ever visited. It has everything including a zoo, rose garden, Japanese garden, memorials, amphitheater and so much more. It is massive with over 341 acres of city park land. Connected to the park land is 64 acres of the Oregon Zoo and 153 acres of the Hoyt Arboretum. All of it combined is the Washington Park. My favorite part of the park was the International Rose Test Garden and the Amphitheater that sits next to it. I also enjoyed the Oregon Vietnam Veterans Memorial. read more

Careful of this guy if you go to the Washington Park Archery Range. Went with a few friends to shoot our bows and some of my group is fairly new to archery. He said was an instructor, but then proceeded to be a total dick to us and he even went so far as to threaten us. At one point he even started following me around, yelling, swearing and trying to start a fight before finally just flipping my group off and walking away. Not only is this man unprofessional, but also dangerous and not conducive to a positive environment. On our way out another archer stopped us and said his bullying is not unusual and he does this regularly to new people at the range. If anyone knows who to report him to please let me know. I have multiple eye witnesses that saw the whole thing and will confirm all of this. The archery range here should be a safe, fun place to go and it is neither with this guy around. read more

Washington Park aka the tourist destination for all things Portland! If you are planning a trip out to Portland, Washington Park is THE place that you absolutely want to be! So many popular Portland attractions are located within this park: *Japanese Garden *Oregon Zoo *Holocaust Memorial *Forestry Center *Hoyt Arboretum *Children's Museum *International Rose Test Garden *Pittock Mansion (located across the way up the hill) .... And probably a few more attractions, but that's all that my little brain can think of at the moment. So much to do and so little time! I was able to visit the Portland Japanese Garden, International Rose Test Garden, and the Pittock Mansion during my latest visit. I enjoyed them all, but my absolute favorite was the Portland Japanese Garden! You could easily spend a few hours in that garden exploring. I would highly recommend that you visit the Japanese Garden while you're in the park. Parking is available all throughout the park and it's $1.60/hr but free after 5. There are several ways to enter the park and parking is located all throughout. The weekends are the busiest and you may end up having to drive around for a bit until you actually find a spot. This park is also filled with beautiful trees and woodsy areas with benches. It's a great place to sit and have lunch. There are several walking and hiking paths that will take you throughout the park. You'll also be able to spot the amphitheater right in the middle of the rose gardens. I would definitely like to come back to explore more of this park the next time that I'm in town. read more

CAUTION!! CAR BREAK-IN. I would like to say that the park itself is nice and there's a lot to do; but the reason why I have it a "1-start review" was because after finishing our hike into the Arboretum & walked to our car...our car got broken into. Worse part is that the car was borrowed from my friend. The part that makes me ANGRY was the fact that I couldn't get a hold of anyone at the park. We arrived to our car at 6 pm. I also tried calling the police to file a report, left messages for the park rangers & no one got back to me. I love Washington Park! It is easily accessible via the TriMet (light rail train) from downtown. They also have paid to park available. There are tons of things to do while at Washington Park and you can easily spend a day or two coming here for the activities. There is a free shuttle that will take you around the park once inside. Some highlights to do while here is to visit the Japanese Garden, wildwood trail hiking, Oregon Zoo, outdoor archery, Hoyt Arboretum, and more. This place is beyond 5 stars. It is an all day event with something for everyone. Half the parks/museums are free! There is also a free shuttle that runs regularly to every stop! Some decent (pricey) food trucks next to the gift shop in the Japanese Garden region. The gift shop is quaint and tiny. It smells like Roses as soon as you walk in, then you kind of get a headache. One of the shuttle drivers was pretty awesome, she was like a tour bus driver. Telling us all about the history of parts of Portland, some of the neighborhoods and homes. I really enjoyed her. She should've had a tip jar! In fact Everyone that I encountered working there seemed to be so HELPFUL! I walked into one museum with a quick question and the guy at the counter was whipping out all kinds of maps and pointing all over the place to guide me. He was so enthusiastic. There was an issue with parking, the main meters you need to walk to, ours wasn't working so you either need to do download the app (Parking Kitty) or pray. Luckily while we were standing forever behind some european tourists, a guide walked up and moved things along. My credit card worked fine and I didn't have to download that app. But he was eager to help us with any questions we had. Always a big smile on his face! The various parks here are BREATHTAKING. Parts of it I felt like I was in some enchanted forest! Plenty of museums to hop into. Just a forewarning.... While we were hiking along there was some sort of "meth tweaker" or whatever on the same trail. He was acting kind of crazy, grunting, taking off his clothes. Most people just calmly walked past him but you just want to be aware of your surroundings. Just use common sense and enjoy the sights! read more

Came here at the end of February so likely not when it was in full bloom. I would have loved to see the roses but got a chance to go to the japanese garden then walked around the park a little. A lot of trails, although this park is large so that makes sense. I also loved that it was on a hill, that left great views when walking around. My Uber driver found it quite confusing to navigate, unfortunately I am not from Portland so couldn't offer any guidance. I also wish the bus came more frequently but honestly I think we are lucky there even was a bus. We ended up walking all the way down and out anyway. read more

A very large and spread out park with loads to do! We went to the rose garden and really enjoyed ourselves! Parking is pretty snug and hard to find, we parked in a neighboring street. The walk was enjoyable with all the antique houses and the beautiful flowers. We first stopped at the rose garden which was lush with rows upon rows of roses. Different types and colors or roses were organized all over. We took so many pictures and found ourselves sitting and just enjoying it all. The rose garden does sit atop a hill near Pittock Mansion so you can kind of see Downtown Portland. Admission to the rose garden is free. Admission to the Japanese Garden is not however. The line was really long, so we passed on the Japanese Garden, although next time we come, we will check it out! Great easy hiking near center of town. You can get lost going from all the trails so take photo, drop a pin to your parking spot. Trails go all over the place, real easy to moderate. Bring water. Views, trees, dog friendly. read more

It's a nice small park. Well maintained and friendly people are going there. I wish they have more are to play around. Other than that it's a nice place to chill. read more

We accidentally found ourselves at the Rose Garden and made our way to the park. The kids loved the walking paths and artwork. Though parts of the play structure itself were a bit rundown, everyone enjoyed the experience as a whole. It's a fun place surrounded by photo worthy sights. read more

This park made a sarcastic, un country bumpkin cynic like me believe that parks can actually change your views on quite a few things. I'm from CA - not a shabby state right - that offers quite a bit of beautiful nature. I didn't think I'd be so taken aback by the Washington Park. Friend took me early both mornings so the park was empty. There was a surreal, quiet, almost comforting feel to this park when you're walking around making mental notes of the surroundings. There weren't many roses blooming but that didn't matter. Some of the grounds were muddy that also didn't matter to me. The quietness and sereneness of this park trumped all other factors. read more
