I have been going to the Fair since I was a child. My first experience was with my dad and his brother. Me and my cousin went on rides together and were able to both do the rides and food for $5.00. We loved the scones, ears of corn and of course the hamburgers with grilled onions. Now we take our grand little ones and love doing some of the same things with them that we did with our 5 children, visiting the barns and seeing the animals, eating scones and hamburgers with grilled onions, eating ice cream, riding the merry go round and the other rides available and now a ride on the camel for the kids. We visited the spring fair and did over 10,000 steps. Our 5 year old said when it was time to leave... but grandma, I still have steps in these feet... It is an amazing place and we will continue to go annually. read more

I've been going to the Puyallup Fair (THAT'S WHAT IT'S CALLED) since I was a child. It's been a yearly tradition for my family and now that I'm a parent, it's a tradition for my kids too! We recently took our kids for a Dizzy Pass day and MAN those are expensive now. I remember when they use to be like $40 and for both of my kids to get a Dizzy Pass it was $140 which is crazy work. I will say it's worth it to make sure they can do a ton of rides, but still. I feel like they added some rides to Sillyville this year which is always a bonus. My kids had such a blast and they did basically every ride. We were smart in terms of food and packed them lunches because they never end up wanting to eat any actual food from the fair so when we do buy them a $20 meal, it goes to waste. So pro tip - pack your kiddos their own food and cut that cost! My husband and I went back for a date night a week or so after taking the kids so that we could check out the new 1900 Food Hall and Rooftop Bar. The new food choices are good additions - we tried the sandwich spot and the new Asian spot. Both were decent, but next year I definitely want to try the Seattle Dog style corndog. The rooftop bar is a VIBE! Especially at night. They did an awesome job with the space. It's pretty big, with lots of different seating options. Bartenders were nice and tried their best to get through the very long line. Prices were shockingly not bad for the fair and were comparable to a regular bar's prices. Gosh, I'd love to give 5-stars, but the price of a good time is through the roof! $22 fir open lot parking, $20 simply to come through the gates - out $42 before doing or eating a thing. Ouch! Beyond the crazy prices (such as a bottle of water for $4.54), the place smelled great! So many tempting food options. I brought my mom so we didn't do rides, but we did walk past many of them. The combination of sounds, sights, and smells really take me back to my younger years. We spent the bulk of our time in the vendor buildings - boo! Washington's state fairgrounds is pretty big. There's lots of parking to support a busy weekend. Parking ranges from $15-$35. Fair tickets are getting to $20 on a weekend. Good number of farm animals, exhibitors selling various goods, and of course fairway food, games and rides. Saw the horse show and various farm animal competitions. While there are a good number of food vendors, they don't have anything too interesting or crazy when it comes to the fair food, which I'm a bit disappointed about. Came today Sunday at open (9:30 am). Parked in the gold parking lot ($22 weekend, $15 weekday) because I'm familiar with that lot in relation to the fairgrounds and leaving back to Tacoma. No line at the gate. Outside food and bev is allowed (no booze!) with additional bag checks. Came with grandma and 2 kiddos and a stroller and everyone was kind and helpful. (Met friends at the fair too) We had purchased advance anytime tickets in August ($13/senior, $13 kid over 5, $15 reg adult, I think?) though military (just show id) is free Mondays and they have a lot of other specials too. Went first to the petting zoo barnyard building then on to rides with kids - we had 2 toddlers in the group and a 9 yr old. Had a snack break and donut break then more rides, lots of stuff for littles! All the workers were friendly. Had some ice cream and chicken nuggets, played some games, then stopped in to exhibition areas. Kids were pretty loopy by then, so got a couple free items and a toy and then got out by 3 ish. 4 stars because a fair day is spendy but also it is mostly worth it for just a fun day. Ride tickets were covered by a deal in advance ($30/8 rides?) and then I purchased $40 tickets for games. Not sure about 4 donuts and a coffee, but a sundae/brownie banana split/oreo shake was about $45. A couple toys were $33 (aka bribery to get kids to follow directions for the day). 2 chicken nugget deals (chicken nuggets, ranch, caprisun) for $6/each. You can do it cheaper or spend more, I tried to just get enough tickets/rides for what the kids wanted to do. I would've liked to eat more substantial food, but sort of just went with what kids were excited about and no one got sick so I think we were ok! I grew up as a child coming here every year. They used to give us a free ticket at school and even gave us a day off from school to attend. Hadn't come in over 20 years though. We had some friends that are new in town and have a 9 year old daughter so I thought it would be fun to go with them. They still put on a great event with tons of delicious unhealthy and over priced food to choose from. They have a great variety of rides and games to play and have plenty of shows to watch. Event is definitely over priced. $70 for a "dizzy" pass that lets you do most of the rides. $20 to get in the door. If you can handle the sticker shock you will have a good time read more

Leaving with a full belly and full heart! This fair is HUGE and has so much to do. We went for 4 hours and I feel like we saw maybe half of it. I loved the diversity of treats- we got so many different things and found prices to be reasonable. I am gluten free and pescatarian and didn't find a ton of meal options (or vendors who knew about allergens), but I guess that is to be expected at the fair. Would love to see them bring in some more seafood or vegetarian options in future years. Or (call me crazy) even a salad? The rides were classic. We wanted to ride some, but waited too long and the lines ended up being hundreds of people long. Wish we would have hopped on rides a bit sooner as lines were more reasonable in the early afternoon. The rooftop bar was cool! The line was a bit disorganized, but it was fun to see the fair from a different angle. Lots of great vendors. What a fun way to experience and discover local. Loved the massage chair demos, popped sorghum samples, henna tattoos, and more. The interactive kids areas were cool. We got stuck in one on accident and with no clear exit, went through the exhibit. I thought it was fabulous. I do not know much about farming, but the animal exhibits made me really sad. I have been to other fairs and seen animals, but this one was particularly depressing to me. The animals were practically stacked on top of eachother- restrained to a bar by their mouth/head and unable to move. I had a hard time with this and could feel the sadness in the room. State Fair to attend that may be fun for you! Now just a heads up, attending this can be pricey. On top of the overpriced foods and tickets (for rides and games), there is an admission charge as well at around $20. I was able to try multiple food and play some games, and of course, the end price was moderately high. Their earthquake burger is known and popular, and I finally tried it. Unfortunately, I was pretty disappointed in it. It reminded me of a cafeteria burger. Their corn dog wasn't good too and it tasted salty. The fair's desserts are good though. I loved the elephant ears. They're probably good because it's likely packed with an insane amount of sugar. The ambiance of the place is good. Classic state fair vibes. It's decently clean as well. It can be packed and the worse part is the slow lines for the rides so a heads up on that. The games very much feels like a scam, as it personally feels rigged... The service is okay. A lot of the staff seems like they're not happy with their jobs. Which I understand because their day can be hectic and I imagine them running into rude customers. read more

I've been to the fair most years since I was in elementary school (probably as early as 2001), and most things inside don't change year by year, for starters. There's always the same rides, the same Showplex with more or less the same vendors every year, and food-wise vendors are also the same or very similar. This year they're celebrating 125 years of the fair, so it looks like they revamped the small area with the rooftop bar with a new mural and some new eateries - this area is called The 1900 on their map. And when there's food, that's where I can review and then talk about it with my experience here! This was on a sunny and hot Saturday. You can usually park at either the several provided parking lots near the respective gates of different colors leading to the fair (though you might get sidetracked by an employees-only parking lot near the golden gate) or many of the residencies offering their parking spaces for somewhere within the same costs as parking at said gates near the fair. Either way, get here early or prepare to face both car and fairgoer traffic. It's pretty hard to get mad at how expensive the food here gas gotten, also it's a fair/public event so food is never gonna be cheap. If you can look past that, this year's food selections weren't too bad: - I tried one food vendor inside The 1900 called Fat Panda under a trusted foodie's recommendation, and their bao buns were relatively good though their rice bowls are average and seem to have the same kinds of rice and veggies that nearly every rice dish in every part of the fair and every vendor that carries them serves. The chicken katsu was better than I expected, though the Mongolian beef definitely did not taste like Mongolian beef. - My mom got some curly fries for herself, and I got to try some. Pretty standard but for some reason we tend to get them every fair. - The Dole whip station closest to the barns at the green gate was out of order, so we had to walk back to the blue gate where we entered from the get their pineapple soft serve. I'm honestly not a fan of Dole whip, but it hits hard and good on a hot day. - We also got some churros to take home. These were prepared well and tasted really good. - We then got a baker's dozen of Fisher scones. It's better to get more compared to just getting one; you can get 13 scones (a baker's dozen) for $30, which is essentially $9 off considering each scone is $3. This is also another food I like to get here every year I go to the fair. There's so many other things to do here as well: - Barns had all the animals as usual. I got to see horses, bunnies and swines throughout this visit. They did close shortly after for the owners of the animals to clean up. - I went to the Showplace Stage to watch something I can only describe as a remixed reimagining of The Little Mermaid. It was very entertaining and I thoroughly enjoyed it. - As mentioned before, the Showplex has tons of vendors that sell stuff like bags, beef jerky, honey, crocheted amigurumi, shoe cleaners, knives, pots, honey, licorice, mattresses and other things. - If you have to try anything here at least once it'd be their earthquake burgers since those have been advertised throughout each fair. From when I had them last year or so, they're subpar if you've had a ton of burgers. Last but not least, the rides! Though I didn't go on any this year, most rides looked pretty much the same. And from years of going: - I've never ridden the Extreme Scream before nor do I think I ever will. Same with the Sling Shot. If you're into heights these would be the rides for you. - I do have a thing for rides that are close to having tall heights like the Enterprise and Super Orbiter. - My usual defaults on a normal day would be the Matterhorn, Cliff Hanger, Inferno, Wave Swinger and Classic Coaster. All these have really long lines since they're some of the most popular, especially the latter two. - The Skyride (the carts hovering above the diagonal of the fairgrounds) is perfect if you wanna see the full view of the fair without all the vertigo that the other rides provide. You know, I'm a 253 native and a millennial... so the 'Puyallup' Fair is a tradition. I have to go. I have to. Even if it's just to walk around and smell the air, people watch, grab a bite to eat, anything the fair has had to offer over the years is gonna be there in some form or another... but the problem is that it is entirely unaffordable. I do not know who to point the blame at to be honest, is it inflation? The current state of affairs in the USA has jacked prices up so high that Elephant Ears (9.00 without any toppings) and Curly Fries (20.00, brick sized) are exorbitantly pricey. You want a bakers dozen scones to go home with you? That'll be 30.00 please! It's sad really. I don't know how "they" (whomever the greedy creeps who are charging these rates) are getting away with it and still bringing in so many people -- I have to assume not everyone has hundreds of dollars to blow on the State Fair right after Back-to-School shopping. Seriously, milkshake from the fair barn - 10.00 Tickets for games to win stuffed toys - 40.00 for 32 DizzyPass to ride endlessly (on select days) 55.00 ... it just seems unsustainable all said. Rides | Dizzy WeekDay Pass | Unlimited Rides & 2 games ($55): My brother and I had a blast riding on the roller coasters, the guitar ride, and we even got on the Tilt A Whirl three separate times, so much fun!! Note: If you lean to the side on the Tilt A Whirl, it will spin more! Hahaha! Other rides were fun as well!! There is a wide variety! Favorite Ride: My absolute favorite ride were the Swings that went up really high into the air; the feeling of flying, and seeing the beautiful view was incredible! I also got on the smaller Swing Ride, which actually tilts at different angles while it spins in the air... Also super fun!! Fun Note: On the guitar ride, a little girl next to us kept screaming... I'm Unstoppable!!! Haha! Loved it! Food: I decided upon The Lobster Shack! My Lobster Roll w/fries ($24) was absolutely delicious, including the delicious bun! Yum!!! The customer service was super friendly! Nicole is so friendly and we had a couple of laughs while I was ordering! There were so many unique items on the menus as my brother and I walked around, including a cotton candy burrito! Imagine that! Haha! Pavillion | Brandon at True Honey Teas: My brother had already gone to the fair and purchased 4 bags of tea, which I tried and was absolutely delicious! Once inside the Pavilion, we headed straight to the booth to purchase the tea! I ended up getting two whole bags after sampling as many as I liked! Peach Roobios and Lavender Lemonade; 24 tea bags in each bag! (2 for $35)! Brandon at the booth was so super fun to chat with and conversation flowed easily, full of personality, loved it! Parking | Entrance: $15 for Parking during the weekday, which is right across the street, very short distance! $22 Parking on the weekend! I had the opportunity to be invited to sit in box 43 of Umpqua Bank Grandstand at the Puyallup Fair. We were gifted 4 tics & 2 worked & 2 were issued incorrectly by the box office. Nick who was over the box office was not really paying attention & delayed our process to get to our seats for an extended period of time and Kathy who at ticketing really was nice & held firm on not allowing us entry to the box due to the clerical ticket issue. I was pretty annoyed at how something so easy to fix became this drawn out issue that took 30 seconds to fix. Once you get to your box you're able to flag down a server and order but they have to verify your tics & seats which Nick didn't print out to give us. We were eventually able to order but geez...what an interesting night. It was nice to be in the box & not shoulder to shoulder though so that was appreciated. Overall, the performance was amazing & the vibe was there once we got to our seats. read more

Clean fairgrounds, expensive food I have been to several state fairs around the country so I was excited that my trip aligned with the Washington state fair. I decided to buy rodeo tickets in advance since they included fair entry, rodeo and a concert. To start off parking is expensive. We paid about $20 to park. Luckily the gate was close to the lot so we didn't have to walk for. The tickets were mobile so we scanned and quickly entered. They give you a map but we decided to stroll around the outside and work are way in. We checked the map halfway to see if we missed anything. The fair itself I felt was small. You could easily walk it in a few hours and see everything. Highlights Washington police museum History of the fair museum The fair itself was clean. The food was really overpriced. About $15 for a sandwich and $4 for a water. The food itself was okay. Nothing I would be raving about as a highlight. We did try the scones. They tasted like a biscuit to me. The saving grace was the rodeo. It was very entertaining. Plus the concert in the dirt afterwards was fun. We ended up being able to stand in the front row. read more

I've been to the state fair several times, over several years. The food options are OK, I feel the vendors sell mostly the same food and you don't see anything really unique. It's also a lot of the same food vendors from the Taste of Tacoma (NW Taste) which I wish one or the other would host more local food vendors. The rides are expensive so we never buy the package or go on the rides. It's fun to walk around the area and look though. We enjoyed our first concert at the Columbia Bank stage and grandstands. The sound quality and light show are great, totally worth it! Grab some food and head to the grandstands to munch while you're enjoying live music, and depending on the day, you may be able to find your way down to the General Admission ground floor area if it's not packed, they'll let you in. I just wish they had more local restaurant food vendors, and more strict watch over the AG areas, so many people have their phones through the stalls and gates in the horses and cows faces :( read more

First time ever at a State Fair. It was pretty big and lots to do with the G-kids. They kids loved it. The kids loved the rides and the animals. Getting to see all the animals up close was cool. The only negative thing was the food. It wasn't very good and way over priced. Imo the corn dogs/KrustyPups were awful and used the cheapest ingredients you can buy. Sales Family Farm booth is the biggest rip-off of the whole fair. read more

If you love rides and fairs, then I guess this would be your thing. It has everything one would expect. We probably never would have gone had it not been for the agriculture competitions. But it's really expensive, even if you have a free pass to get it. For example, we spent $15 just to park, then $60 for 120 ride tickets, rides are around 13 tickets. That's not a lot, especially if you're riding together. You could get an all day kids ride bracelet for $55 but then parents still need something for themselves. So we just went with the $60 ride package. We got two cold drinks at the cafe, that's another $18!!! For two drinks! And of course, we needed to eat. We dropped over $100 that day for just myself and my child. I would not recommend. Washington has SO many fun free things to do with kids because we're surrounded by nature's theme park. read more

A very cool experience to do and see at least once! Tasty eats, live entertainment, and so many cute animals! Tickets - My husband and I purchased them online for about $17 each and then arriving there paid for parking - $20 cash or card at the gold lot. Things we ate: + Fischer Scones (about $3.5 for a single scone loaded with jam) - honestly this was so good! I can see why there are so many stands all throughout the fair! + BBQ Pete's Turkey leg (about $23) we got this one because the wood smoke allured us in. The leg was yummy and had a smoky flavor but a little bland in flavor. It was nice they let us have some bbq sauce. + Lulu's Dairy Farm ice cream - This was also super yummy. We got the strawberry swirl and it was a nice refresher. We didn't really stay too long at the fair - maybe around 3 hours or so. Games and rides are a little pricey. We came mainly for food and vendor shopping. Lots of different vendors and different spaces. I liked the artisan market area more than the main vendor area but it's probably because there were more homeowner goods and we don't have a house for a hot tub or sauna yet. We caught part of Roberto the Magnificent - my husband seemed interested but I thought it was just ok. Watching jugglers stresses me out so we left part of the way through the show. Fun guy though! Our favorite part of the fair was all the cute animals and petting areas! My heart was melting looking at all the cute birds, bunnies, mini horses, alpacas, and more! Overall, it's a little pricey in my opinion and I'm not sure I would come back every year or anything but definitely fun to come with family and friends to hang out and enjoy tasty eats. read more

Big fair with lots of food and things to do, from typical rides to art and cultural exhibits highlighting Washington. I would recommend it for adults and kids over 2 (most rides are more fun for older kiddos). We went on a cold, rainy Labor Day, which was a great choice if you want to go on the rides. There was no line for entering or purchasing food. We only stayed until noon, but was able to pet animals, look at some exhibits, watch a magic comedy show, and of course get lunch. I was here in July for Taste of NW, so I was naturally a little disappointed by the food options. My favorites we tried were fried cheese curds and fennel cake. We had an enjoyable trip to this fair. It's always a joy to visit another state fair to see how things are done in their area. You can feel the nostalgia. If I ever find myself in this area again and the fair is here, I would definitely revisit. Beware where you purchase your water from. It's exactly what you would expect from a state fair. Yes, it's expensive. But we figure it's only once a year and it's a treat for the kids. The food is typical fair food. We always take our own snacks and bottled water but will still partake in some fair fare. The Mac and cheese (granted, it is called Carnitas Mac and Cheese) was unfortunately nothing like the picture. At least half of the bowl is a layer of shredded pork which we did not expect. My son loves mac and cheese but not with the meat topping! Scooped it all off and was left with a small about of pure Mac and cheese. Next time I'd ask for it sans meat. Here's a handy tip for the Dip'n Dots by the little train depot. They sell a "small" for 7 dollars or a "mini" for 5 dollars. Both containers hold the same volume, scientifically tested at a hand washing station once the contents were consumed. The mini $5 version holds the same about as the $7 small. Save yourself $2. Sky Ride was by far my favorite "ride". One ticket cheaper than the Ferris wheel, and is a nice relaxing Birds Eye view. Overall, a good experience and a once a year splurge. read more

We still call it the Pullayup Fair and we still go every year. Unfortunately prices keep going up for tickets and food. We got tickets online for $14 and parked close by on the street. Never mind the $22 parking. Loved checking out the livestock, chickens, even dogs and cats. Be sure to check the rotating schedule to see what animal are being shown that week. And the food! Be sure to get the HUGE smoked turkey leg- $22 plus tax, onion burger $12.40 from the famous Sales vendor and of course the fair scones with raspberry jam- sooo flaky! Yes, they're pricy but you have to get them- it's tradition! This year they had camel rides! $10 per person. Word of caution- bring a hat,use sunscreen and drink lots of water. And going to one of the food choices to get napkins like she suggested is not a good answer. Tips are based on quality of service, asking for a tip before service is her strategy because she knew she would not get a tip. I am just frustrated, I don't think it's too much to have your experience go hand in hand with the cost. It was about 1/3 capacity, so it's not because they were busy. The Social House being empty while the other drinking places on the grounds were full should have been a red flag for me. I'll say this, it was clean, there was a very nice grandma type swooping in to clean tables as soon as someone left. She would have done the Social House reputation good if she was behind the bar instead of whom was there. Avoid this place. read more

What can I say? I'm not a WA native so it was my first time coming to the fair. My friends, who are natives gave me the history of the fair and told me about the controversy with the name. They affectionately call it the Puyallup Fair and refuse to call it the WA State Fair. While there I mentally compared it to the LA county fair and there were some big differences. I will say that I appreciated the pride that folks had about the fair overall and the scones. I didn't understand what the big deal was about them until I had one and boy were they amazing! The grounds were a good size and we weren't able to see everything, but I was ok with that, as I was getting tired of walking. What could be better? Well of course the prices. Everything was expensive and most of the stuff wasn't worth what the vendors were charging. My favorite was the fried zucchini. Those were scrumptious. I would say that the fair burger was disappointing. The ingredients sounded good, but the execution was poor. There was no flavor as the beef and grilled onions desperately needed salt. Great to bring the kids, but I doubt I'll want to go back again. I didn't hate it. It's just that I got to experience it, and don't feel the need to do so again. I'm writing about the snack bar at the Washington State Fairgrounds. It's a given they're outrageously overpriced. They're also dishonest. I bought coffee on a credit card. Unbeknownst to me, they jack up the bill with a $.50 "convenience" surcharge...and they're not honest enough to tell you that's happening. It turns out they have a small sign that tells you about the "convenience" surcharge, conveniently placed under the Square credit card reader where I could not see it. Beware these dishonest fraudsters. If I could give fewer than the one star I would; the quality if their food certainly doesn't rate a higher score. read more

This year's fairgrounds had a lot of structural upgrades, giving the place a "modern farmhouse" feel, like Chip and Joanna Gaines designed the reno. The changes make the fairgrounds feel cleaner, but they've also shifted the atmosphere. It feels less "cheap thrills, sugar highs and questionable life choices- classic fair vibes," and more like "wealthy suburbanites in cowboy hats playing rancher for the day." Definitely a different vibe. The food, as always, was outrageously priced. Even living comfortably and saying this every year, we couldn't help but gape: $30 for two drinks (a lemonade and a sweet tea we shared on separate trips), $15 for a disappointing cup of elote corn, $25 for two coffees, $30 for a Philly cheesesteak with onion rings (the onion rings were sooo good, but the sandwich was mostly hard bread with barely any filling), and an $11 corn dog. Prices keep climbing yet the quality, creativity and variety haven't kept pace. Our favorite part of the fair is the Showplex. Every year we look forward to exploring new vendors, revisiting old favorites, and inevitably getting talked into buying things that just takes up space and collects dust. That said, Trimlights turned out to be one of the best upgrades we've made (their customer service was s awesome as well) and Cutco has been a rock-solid, buy-it-for-life kind of purchase. I love the elderly people working the fair, they are so sweet, friendly and truly like working there. The teenagers are mostly great as well. Overall, the combo of higher prices and the whole "modern farmhouse makeover" gives the impression that the fair isn't really designed for working-class families anymore, which is disappointing. If you go, buy nothing. Merchandise is often a knock off or very over priced; not all, but a good majority. The food prices are offensive. $18 for a Burger patty, onions, and a bun. The Burger is precooked left in a warm bath, and then grilled for 30 seconds. Such a shame for a classic fair burger. The real laugher is if you get Ranch or BBQ sauce with your $17 dollar brick of fries. You will pay $3 for a 1oz sauce cup. Rides and games are over priced too but at least you know what you are getting. The kids loved it because with almost every game you are guaranteed to win a cheap little plushie. My advice, eat before you go, bring your own drinks (look at the restrictions on the fair site), and buy nothing until you price check online.
