Designed to drain water from the notoriously flooded Comstock Lode mines, this 3.88-mile tunnel became one of the greatest mining infrastructure feats of the 19th century. The tunnel was said to be able to drain 4mm gallons of water a day in its prime! What makes the Sutro Tunnel so compelling isn't just its size or ambition, but the purpose behind it. At a time when mining disasters were common, this tunnel was a visionary solution to save lives, improve ventilation, and streamline ore transport. Adolph's drive led not only to the tunnel's creation but also to the birth of a vibrant town around it, complete with homes, a post office, a church, and even its own newspaper. Although the commercial impact of the tunnel was eventually limited--due to shifting mining priorities and falling silver yields--its legacy as a pioneering piece of mining infrastructure remains unshaken. It's a symbol of ingenuity, persistence, and community spirit. Fast forward to today: the site is being lovingly restored thanks to the efforts of the Friends of Sutro Tunnel and local volunteers. These modern-day stewards are breathing life back into the historic structures, including the machine shop, mule barn, and portal entrance. The first hundred feet of the tunnel have already been cleared, with plans to extend much further. I attended a fundraiser event put on by the Friends of Sutro Tunnel in which they had poker tournament in the tunnel itself! What you'll find when you visit isn't a tourist trap--it's a time capsule. The preserved buildings echo with history, and the guided experiences provide insight not just into mining, but into the people and dreams that shaped Nevada. With ongoing fundraising events and community gatherings, the site continues to give back--raising thousands for causes like childhood cancer and drawing people together over a shared love of history.

This marker is located along the road that leads from Carson City to Virginia City. It's on a…read moresomewhat steep hill and there is a train crossing. It's on the east side of the road. The marker reads, "Gold Hill's first fire company was organized as Silver Hook & Ladd on Novemeber 18, 1863. It disbanded and re-organized as Liberty Hose Co. No.1 on August 19 1864, purchasing its first hose carriage from Folsom & Hiller of San Francisco in October of 1864 for $400. The company occupied a 16 by 25 foot town owned building, later moving to Sol Weil's building on Main St. In 1868, the company purchased a Hunneman hand-pumped fire engine from San Francisco's Howard Engine Co. No.3, re-organizing as an engine company, but retaining the hose company. In 1869 Liberty built its own 28 by 60 foot firehouse on this site, with a bell tower and second floor rooms for the foreman and one or two others. In 1873, the company sold the Hunneman hand engine and purchased a new Button hand, adding a structure on the north side for maintaining and storing hose in 1874. Liberty sold its hand engine in 1910, keeping a four-wheel hose carriage and two-wheel cart in service. Liberty Engine and Hose No.1 disbanded in 1938. A WPA project repaired and painted the firehouse that year, but the combination of heavy snows and schools desk stored on the second floor collapsed the old firehouse in the winter of 1952." All that remains is this stone monument where the roof tower has been mounted. There is not much space here for parking but if the road is quiet, you can pull to the side. Excellent bridge replacement. The RTC has replaced 2 dilapidated bridges with these beautiful new…read morebridges that are functional for driving, walking, bicycling, river viewing, and sitting. These bridges are located in and over Wingfield Park and will be closed for events. The underneath of the bridges was not forgotten either, they are decorated and functional as well.

The Balanced Rocking Stone is a 17 ton granite boulder that overlooks the town of Truckee. Some…read morecall it an irrelevant roadside attraction, a non notable geological anomaly, a boring local landmark, a incurious curiosity... whatever. Thus making this an irrelevant review. Supposedly in the past, the Washoe Native Americans took interest in it... some say revered it. In the 1860s, a museum was built next to it by the "prominent" citizen, CF McGlashan. That is long gone and what is next to it now is the Truckee Veterans Memorial Building and parking lot. The boulder no longer rocks as legend had it. There is a gazebo built on top of it and a steel staircase to the top. From the top, you can view parts of the town below and the mountain range in the distance. The view is nice. But it didn't take my breath away. Actually I had to hold my breath... beware the top of the boulder and gazebo is filled with bird poo and is not consistently maintained. Watch where you step. The landmark can be viewed in less than 10 minutes. But if you enjoy history and local folklore, it's worth checking out at least once if you have the time and inclination to do so. Sorry folks, my pics aren't very good. I don't have a full on view of the rock boulder.

Along the side of Geiger Grade Road as it descends from Virginia City to Reno (if you're headed the…read moreother way, it would be ascending), this red stone and concrete marker points out some of the history of the area. The marker reads, "North of this marker, a station was established in 1860 on Geiger and Tilton's new toll road from Truckee Meadows, ** Fine springs, terminus of several wood roads, and a population of teamsters, stock and sheep men were found at Lousetown. Nevada's most unique name. The area included the first Virginia City railroad surveys, first ice project, and race track with trap shooting and picnic grounds. The first telegraph line to Reno and the largest toll station in the area in the area were in the vacinity [sic] of this marker." It's still eight turns back from the road and through an industrial park that includes Waste Management, so be on the lookout for garbage trucks on the wrong side of the road. There is a small parking area at the end of an asphalt road and you'll need to walk in. The cemetery ground is uneven and sandy in most places, so it's not handicapped or wheelchair accessible. The marker near the entrance tells the story. "Empire City was a milling town that was established in 1855. As you read this storyboard you are facing east toward Brunswick Canyon. The City of Empire was located to your right about 1/4 - 1/2 mile. At one time Empire City stretched for 3/4 of a mile and had a peak population of 700 people. Located on the Carson River, it got its nickname, Seaport, because the river was used to ship timber here from Alpine County. Previously the timber had been hauled over the mountains. The town milled lumber, most of which was used in the underground labyrinth of the Comstock Lode. The primary ore that was milled here was silver and gold bearing quartz rock." "There are approximately 200 people buried in Empire Cemetery. The people buried here had an assortment of occupations such as: Laborers in the mills, shopkeepers, blacksmiths, carpenters, cooks, feeders, masons, real estate agents and amalgamators. Not all of the people here made it to adulthood as there are many children buried here. Also interned is a Vietnam Veteran who died serving his country." Getting there wasn't easy. Our GPS got us in the area, this Yelp map's no help. We found ourselves on Morgan Mill Road looking up at a hill. How to get up there? Going around on Deer Run Road brought us into an industrial maze that were all private roads. We asked at the Federal building and some nice folks tried looking at land maps but couldn't figure out a way in. So we chalked this up as a miss and started back on the road. The sculpture is quite lifelike and detailed. The inscription reads, "A gift from the Nevada mining industry to the state of Nevada in cooperation with the Nevada Mining Association. A Gift From the Nevada Mining Industry to the State of Nevada in Cooperation with the Nevada Mining Association. Presented on Behalf of the Industry by Timothy Collins, President of United Mining Corporation. Accepted and Dedicated by the Twenty-Sixth Governor of Nevada, The Hon. Richard H. Bryan." This painted bronze marker is mounted on the front of the Mark Twain Museum along the main street…read moreof Virginia City. It's in reasonable condition and in need of a touch up. The marker reads, "Near this site Nov. 3, 1860 was published the first Territorial Enterprise under a Virginia City dateline. Born 1858 at Genoa the Enterprise was to become a celebrated property of the Old West whose Editors, Joe Goodman, Rollin Daggett, Mark Twain, Judge C.C. Goodwin, achieved immortality in Western legion. This marker is placed Nov. 3, 1955 to mark 95 years of Nevada letters. Lucius Beebe, Publisher. Charles Clegg, Editor." From the hmdb, "When the paper first located in Virginia City in 1860, it was located down the street, on the second floor of the building which today is the Silver Dollar Saloon. In early 1862, it moved to the present location. Mark Twain started working there in August of 1862. The fire in 1875 did destroy most of the upstairs, however, the basement was not harmed. Fortunately, the desk Twain used, the composing tables, and type cases were in the basement at the time of the fire. Twain wrote a lot of his articles for the paper in that basement.
