THE SETUP Since some of us can't get enough stories about Pioneering tragedies, and traipsing across trails like the Donner Pass, why not go further up into Nevada Silver Country and just get the crap scared out of us, right? So a couple weeks back a bunch of us gathered in Virginia City - aka "Ghost Town" - and went to the Washoe Saloon, where some brave souls pledged to help us get to the bottom of these sordid tales of woe from yesteryear. STREETS, HOTELS, COURTS, OPERA HOUSES & SALOONS We trooped all Ghost Town and I dare say we had some close encounters of the spirit-kind. Our tour guides had some fancy-schmancy electromagetic detectors to indicate when spirits were nearby and I'd be lying if I didn't admit some wacky stuff happened while we went from one building to another. In one hotel - the aptly named "Ghost Hotel" - we learned the story of Rose, and such a sad plaintiff tale of her forlorn love. REVIEW #1700! One…read moreof the things I enjoy about traveling is the sometimes random discovery of local and historical points of interest. And since part of Gayle's family is from Genoa, and that someday we might actually move here, it's fun to look around and see what I might find. This morning, I started out trying to find a newspaper, but instead just started driving around. And as I drove down Genoa Lane, I came upon the Hanging Tree. One of the worst chapters in the history of Genoa took place in 1897 when a drifter, Adam Uber, accused of murdering a popular teamster, Hans Anderson, was lynched. Uber was dragged from his jail cell in the night and hanged from this tree (along what was then called Boyd's Lane). According to the local legend, all of the perpetrators of the lynching later suffered injuries, great tragedies in their families, or terrible calamities. The story has been immortalized by the Carson Valley Historical Society in their annual progressive play, "The Curse of the Hanging Tree". There is a plaque on the tree east of Genoa on Genoa Lane.

A monument to pioneer families [Truckee CA]…read more A short walk on the paved trail from the visitor center led us to the pioneer monument. The monument stands on the spot where the Schallenberger, and later the Breen, cabin once stood. Dedicated and honoring all the emigrants (not just the Donner Party) who followed the Truckee River and crossed the Sierra on their way to the west (California). The emigrant family sits on top of a 22-foot pedestal and is facing westward toward Donner Pass. Completed on June 6th 1918 and marked California Historical Landmark #134. There are educational interpretive signs nearby worth the read. Interesting to see this monument standing at one of the most historic sites in emigrant history. During the winter of 1846-1847 we learned that nearly half of Donner Party died from cold and lack of food. They set up camp around this area and was trapped by snow during their journey, imagine trekking in prairie wagons pulled by oxen from Illinois. So sad for those who perished just because of this unfortunate decision they took as a shortcut... ahhh! so close yet so far. Review #3557

The governors mansion was a really cool and exciting place where I recently attended an…read moreinstallation ceremony event. The ballroom was spacious and over all awesome space to hold breakfasts or luncheons. The staff was friendly and the set up of the event was lovely.

I was here last week to witness Governor Lombardo's signing of Senate Bill 96 (which designates…read moreJanuary 27 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day in the State of Nevada). The Governor's Mansion complex includes the home and an adjacent (and nicely appointed) Reception Building, where this event took place. The impressive 2-story Governor's mansion itself is within a residential neighborhood of Carson City, and apparently is a stop along the Kit Carson Trail. The Governor's Mansion is also known to be one of the most haunted places in Nevada.

This marker is located along the road that leads from Carson City to Virginia City. It's on a…read moresomewhat steep hill and there is a train crossing. It's on the east side of the road. The marker reads, "Gold Hill's first fire company was organized as Silver Hook & Ladd on Novemeber 18, 1863. It disbanded and re-organized as Liberty Hose Co. No.1 on August 19 1864, purchasing its first hose carriage from Folsom & Hiller of San Francisco in October of 1864 for $400. The company occupied a 16 by 25 foot town owned building, later moving to Sol Weil's building on Main St. In 1868, the company purchased a Hunneman hand-pumped fire engine from San Francisco's Howard Engine Co. No.3, re-organizing as an engine company, but retaining the hose company. In 1869 Liberty built its own 28 by 60 foot firehouse on this site, with a bell tower and second floor rooms for the foreman and one or two others. In 1873, the company sold the Hunneman hand engine and purchased a new Button hand, adding a structure on the north side for maintaining and storing hose in 1874. Liberty sold its hand engine in 1910, keeping a four-wheel hose carriage and two-wheel cart in service. Liberty Engine and Hose No.1 disbanded in 1938. A WPA project repaired and painted the firehouse that year, but the combination of heavy snows and schools desk stored on the second floor collapsed the old firehouse in the winter of 1952." All that remains is this stone monument where the roof tower has been mounted. There is not much space here for parking but if the road is quiet, you can pull to the side. According to…read morethe site, former Clark County State Senator Jean Ford found that there was an absence of information specific to Nevada women and sought to correct this important deficiency. This marker is one in the series. The marker is located on the site of the Nevada State House and is pink lettering on a white background with pink trim. It reads, "Felice Cohn. Lawyer & Co-founder Nevada Equal Franchise Society. Write Woman Suffrage Bill passed by Legislature 1911, 1913 and by voters 1914." Online, there is more information about this remarkable woman. Felice Cohn was born May 14, 1878, in Carson City, Nevada, to Morris and Pauline Sheyer Cohn. Felice enrolled at the University of Nevada in Reno for a year and then went to Stanford University. She attended Stanford during the years 1895-96 and 1896-97, but did not graduate. She studied law for several years and in 1902 she was admitted to the bar through the U.S. District Court, Ninth District, in Carson City. Vitally interested in the welfare of women, Felice Cohn became involved in suffrage rights for women in 1911. She was one of the founding members of the State Equal Franchise Society and chaired the legislative committee during the 1911 legislative session, lobbying effectively during that time to see the successful passage of the resolution she had drafted: "There shall be no denial of the elective franchise at any election on account of sex." People were amazed at the ease with which the resolution was passed, due in part to her efforts. There is much more.
