Similar tone, but with a rough and dominating texture we would never have selected in a million years. Clashes with the refined print, compromising the entire piece. Perhaps the one we chose was unavailable and they substituted something else. Perhaps this seemed to them like a good solution rather than losing the sale entirely, as we live out of town and couldn't easily come in to make another selection, but we're crushed. We would much rather have received the print alone, with a refund for the frame that couldn't be provided.

For a few years, my Dad was an artist in residence here during the summer months. It's just a couple hours from San Francisco. Of all the places my Dad visited and taught at around the world, Mendocino was his favorite place. It's a magical place perched above the cliffs facing the Pacific Ocean, just beyond the Headlands. There's a courtyard that connects each studio, the gallery at one end. There's paintings, pottery, photography, lithographs, glass sculptures, etc. During these times, the art center is closed but you can view current artists' work on their website. Some pieces are available for purchase. You can even see a little bit of its magic through the screen.

And, this one did not disappoint! Such a fantastic selection of diverse books. Such fun gift ideas and home decor knick knacks and merch stuff, too. We are so loaded up on books (think stacks on stacks on stacks), but we wanted to support this business, so we bought a big candle and some fun stickers. I highly recommend Gallery Bookshop, and I'll definitely plan to return next time we're in the area.

If I had to choose I'd say I preferred Highlight Gallery to Panache; the stuff Highlight showcases is far more contemporary, eclectic, and elegantly clean. Panache seems to favor a mix of artwork that is much more traditional, homey, and rustic - honestly a lot of stuff seemed dated. At Highlight there were at least a dozen things I wanted to purchase and take home, whereas at Panache I didn't really feel any pangs of desire. I enjoyed browsing and relaxing in both galleries, however.

In a recent first visit, I was just forming an impression that the merchandise lacked artistic subtlety when a strange scene unfolded. My wife and I watched in amazement as the salesperson (I presume the shop owner) badgered a customer who had left her dog and her husband outside, to bring the DOG into the store. The polite customer made repeated protests about problems with the size of the dog, its huge waging tail, its colon problems, etc., to which the saleswoman replied that she would pay for anything the dog broke. She went on to press her case by saying that it was CHILDREN she likes to keep out of the store, not dogs. She loudly confided just how she hated it when people had the audacity to bring their kids into her shop full of breakables. At this point, my wife and I walked out in disgust. Our children are now grown, but we spent many happy years and lots of dollars in Mendocino galleries, children in tow. If you are similarly encumbered, choose another shop.

We worked…read morethrough all of the details by email and phone, including selecting the style, diamonds, metals and so forth. It was all done long distance so we were a little nervous, but when we received the rings we were blown away! He did a wonderful job on them and they are really something special. His craftsmanship is top notch. We dropped by his shop the day of our wedding to meet him in person and have him polish our rings. We can't say enough about how happy we are that we chose Chris to make this very significant symbol of our special day.
