I stayed at the Waterfront Hotel as a last-minute decision while in the area hiking at Effigy Mounds and Pike's Peak. The hotel decor is modern, clean, and very inviting. The rooms have a more unique feel than you'd find at a normal chain hotel. The back side of the hotel overlooks a backwater section of the Mississippi (unfortunately, when I stayed the water levels were very low, so there wasn't much to see). On the second floor of the hotel is the Backwater bar, a good place to get a drink or dinner, with large doors that open to to a deck, fresh air, and the same river view. It was nice to be able to get a good meal there without having to venture out, and seemed to be popular with the locals as well. The included breakfast was tremendous - eggs, biscuits, fruit, sausage, donuts, cereal, basically all you could ask for. The hotel is right in the historic district, and it's easy to go out for a walk around there or across the bridge and to St Feriole Island Park for a stroll. The only downside I saw is that the hotel is right next to the bridge over the Mississippi and the traffic noise (motorcycles and trucks) was more than I prefer.

Opened October 2019. A beautiful, new hotel on the water in the historic district of Prairie du Chien. Gorgeous view of the water from every room on the back of the hotel. Rooms have big windows. I stayed here for a full 7 days. Excellent service from staff who were all pleasant, well trained (not one "well, I don't know"), and accommodating to our needs. The breakfast that's included with your stay is delicious. Real scrambled eggs. Real biscuits. Real gravy. Real sausages. Great selection of baked goods and pastries. Never did I feel bored with the selection.

Update: His father officially passed. So thank you for keeping our money that could go towards his funeral.

Google had the hotel listed for $104. Big difference. Lucy refused to honor it and I was told I had to go through a 3rd party to get that price. Which according to Lucy could take minutes to hours to show up on their system. Surprise - it took hours and they refused to give us a key even though they had all of our info and a confirmation number. There's literally 2 cars in the parking lot. It's not like they should be turning down customers. My husband got involved and she was rude to him. If we weren't so exhausted from driving and the trouble and money already invested in the non refundable reservation we would have gone elsewhere. Had we known about the noise and lights we would have. Every room has earplugs for a reason! You can throw a rock and hit a train and a gas station. Train blows its horn at least every half hour right outside the hotel. The only gas station in town is right outside your window. Lovely view of glaring lights through the curtains that don't close properly. Every truck and motorcycle (which is everyone) with no muffler takes off like a bat out of hell with absolutely no regard for any possible people either in the hotel or in any other building. Barney Fife hides up the hill and nabs everyone rolling through the stop sign right outside your window. Two tv remotes and neither controls the obnoxious volume then wouldn't shut the tv off. We just unplugged it. Nothing about this hotel is worth the full price. Nothing is worth any discounted price. Do yourself a favor and go anywhere else!

When we arrived in McGregor, we were immediately greeted by Richard and Charlene who made sure we parked in a safe location. Richard helped with our bags. As we entered the suite, our senses are bombarded with an Americana motif taken to the nth degree. Almost every square inch is decorated by images and pictures of the old jail and firehouse. The Palucci's will fill you in on the history of the jail and some interesting stories. in addition, there are old trickets and toys representing firemen and the jail theme. Charlene's father was a fireman in Chicago and she has a tribute of him displayed in the kitchen area. Just about every square inch of this room is covered with something. Even the ceiling is wallpapered. If you have sensitivity to sensory overload then this is definitely not the place for you. But, if you appreciate the time and care that went into trying to make this one-room reflect the history of the town, then you will really appreciate the decor and ambiance. Although not officially a Bed and Breakfast, the Palucci's have generously stocked the fridge with pastries and cinnamon rolls, milk, juice, jellies, etc. The pantry has coffee, teas, and snacks. Richard and Charlene have gone out of their way to make sure you can make your way through all the switches and amenities that the place has to offer. In fact, they have written directions for EVERYTHING in the room. There are directions for which light switch is for which area of the room, how to turn the key to open the door, how long to keep the A/C running. You'll either find it endearing or eccentric. Another consideration is the location to Main Street. The room itself if just feet from Main Street and the Mississippi River is only about 4 blocks. But, with the big picture window open, all passerby's can see in. Not a big deal since you can close the blinds for privacy (there's even a note on how to do that). Overall, we really enjoyed our visit at the Old Jail and Firehouse Guest Suite. We found it clean and comfortable. We really appreciated the friendliness and care from RIchard and Charlene. We would definitely stay there again!

It took the gal at the front desk almost 10 minutes to get us checked in. Yes, there was new carpet in the hallways and "fresh" paint. Our room had peel and stick flooring. Not the worst but it was already coming up. The room had a new paint that had been put on with a spray gun. Paint on the trim, toilet, etc. Speaking of the toilet, there were feces on the outside of the toilet. I went down to the front desk with a picture and asked for a cleaning rag and disinfectant. The gal was very nice, shared my picture with the "management" and said she could clean it. Not to be mean, she was very overweight and was having a difficult time getting around behind the desk. I said I could do it and she was good with that. It was noisy, the floor was dirty and there was hair on the couch. The breakfast was terrible. We wish we would have seen the motel down the road. Veteran owned and guaranteed clean. I asked for some sort of compensation when we checked out, and the "manager" said more than likely we wouldn't get anything because they offered to clean up the mess. Poor management, terrible company.

We were in town for one night so this would do - the reviews were good as was the price. We opted for two double beds at the AAA rate. Friends were also staying here and paid about the same but got just one double bed. I thought our room was snug until I walked into theirs. Micro indeed! While the rooms were small they were relatively new or updated. The bathroom was basic but fine. There was a fridge and microwave and they had a good free breakfast. The front desk clerk in the morning looked in rough shape - looks like someone slugged him in the face since he was holding ice on it - hmmm hope it wasn't a dissatisfied guest! Overall decent enough.
