It is a wide open field with agility obstacles, hills, sitting area. I'm sure the grass could've been tended to more. I'm not sure how the water fountain worked, every one seemed to have known, but there are two large dog bowls owners periodically would fill up instead of letting the dogs drink out the fountain. There is dog poop bags provided at posts throughout the park, but the only trash cans I spotted were at the entrance (so it's a long walk with poop in hand). Be careful where you walk. I saw owners picking up poop, but there is still enough poop to warn you of your step while there. The was a water fountain at the entrance as well, too. There is a covered concrete portion with seats. It was posted that on Wednesday's the park is closed sunrise to noon for maintenance. I brought my own ball thinking there wouldn't be any as this was my first time at this dog park, but there were plenty. An owner told me someone brought a large bin of new tennis balls for Christmas/New Year's. It's a very large park, so it's easy to lose sight of your dog At first, a pit was being aggressively dominant with Baloo and no one even paid attention to their dog but after a while I step in and corrected the dog for its behavior. Later saw that it was a woman too busy in conversation. Overall cool dog park, love that it's close by. Will probably go back for a last minute dog park day.

Our boy ended up getting stitches and has to wait another week to get them out. I know sometimes there are balls and stuff but never had anything like that happen. Obviously this dog was aggressive with toys. If you have a dog like that stay home! Dr. Ott has had this park for years and there has never been any incidents that I know of and hopefully won't again. He opened this park so dogs could play along with others and have room to run, l am hesitant for my husband to bring him back there but I know he will because our dog begs to go to the park.

There are multiple trash cans all over the place as well as poop bag dispensers hidden every here and there you just got to look for one. There are plenty of watering stations as well as big tubs for the dogs to get in and cool themselves off!! There are multiple seating areas around the walk and some of them have a nice structure built over them. There are also tree swings that are actually hung from trees and benches and picnic tables and everything else dispersed every here in there around the park. They even have an American flag on a pole right in the center of the park!! You don't see that very often and you also don't see poop on the ground very often in this park? There is plenty of parking right next to the dog park and there are plenty of old growth trees and bushes and shrubs and everything else for your dog to explore and look through. The only thing it doesn't have other than poop on the ground is some kind of lake or river Creek,, otherwise it would definitely be a 5 plus Star Park

Because it is a preserve the trails aren't well kept which I get cause Nature. However, the trails aren't well marked and they don't match the map online or posted at the preserve opening. There is not passage where there should be and extra trails that aren't marked anywhere but are painted. Not to mention, it states only that there is a restroom, which there is but it is closed to the public. I could easily see someone getting lost. The Blue Trail was easy enough and marked accurately. The Red and Yellow Trails . I attempted to do them if that counts....

My daughter, who is almost 4years old was able to utilize the older kids area without any challenges. There are some pavilions with benches and tables to avoid the direct sun. Perfect for groups. There is also a bathroom on site but it's much to be desired. The playground is adjacent to a ballpark, not sure the protocol to use it. I would definitely return though to the playground if I'm in the area.

If you're in the south Tampa area and looking for pretty water views, casual seafood, or a fun kids playground, definitely visit Ballast Point Park!

Last week we explored to the East, logic dictates we head West because there's more land, more trails and a brisk twenty minutes in, past the equestrian area and I had wished I brought my compass . So I looked to the sun, it was my nearing 9:45AM so I made a quick little sundial and determined my bearings, keeping the rays at my right shoulder, a tall pine in the distance for extra measure. So quickly the terrain can change from soft and slow white sand to fast packed non-silty soil to brown and boggy muddy to green and lush all within a stones throw in any direction. Know this friends - you'll be given no help from signage - only arrows , there are numbers from 15 to 3 - yet, not telling ya anything at all - no maps at the gate, nobody in the booth at the gate - nobody official looking around, so be aware of that if you want to see beyond the next turn. Getting turned around is easier than going straight towards the trails end. I assumed that the 15 I saw, then the 7 I saw then the 3&4 means I'd be on a cylindrical circumnavigation - looping back to the pavement that takes you in and separated the two very different sides of the park. We came up on Dude Lake and here in this primitive shallow shored lake - along with birds, turtles are sounds unique to my ears, movements in the brush that have the dogs diving into and thrashing within - only to pop out from the other side dumbfounded and disappointed. There are things that are unseen underneath - human penetration is virtually impossible without damaging the plants, vines and thick green entanglements. I believe these are small creatures, whatever they are but emit the most beautiful sounds, whatever they are.

The park is off Tamiami Trail / U.S. 41. Williams Park is nearby as well as the Manatee Viewing Center. Nice park across from the Mosaic Plant on the inland side of 41. The park is open with lush (highish) grass a couole picnic tables and some rocky mangrovey shoreline with a couple open spots on the Alafia River. Very pretty. Good place to play fetch. The Apollo Beach Dogpark, E.G. Simmon ($2) and Apollo Beach Preserve (when it reopens) are also good area spots. There is an eatery on the water on the other side of the river off Ohio Ave (take a left going south on 41 on Pennsylvania Ave., left on Massachusetts and lef on Ohio. It's called the River's edge and is very casual for wings, oysters, fried clams, grouper sammiches, peel n eat shrimp and deviled crab. BLTs too.

Taking the long walk to the back, there were many pavilions, playgrounds and nature walks, that I was surprised to see. There's even a disk golf for anyone who enjoys playing! Definitely recommend this beach if you want to bring your dog to the beach. The dog beach is perfectly sectioned off by a fence and there is an area to give your dog a bath before leaving. It's perfect so you don't have to bring them into your car all sandy! It's typically not too busy but if you go in the weekend it might get a little crowded. Great beach and park nearby and even better that it's free!
