They sure are generous hosts and the food brought me back to the good old days of tasty Chinese fast food. The place is cosy. I've no photos of the food as my elderly iPhone ran out of power as we arrived, so these gentle good folks charged it while we dined. We opted for a set meal as it gave us duck & pancakes as well as chicken & sweetcorn soup, four main meals, a sweet & sour chicken, a beef & black bean, a chicken satay and a King prawn dish as well as fried rice. We were given a huge portion of very good quality prawn crackers on arrival. We were so hungry we polished them in no time and a similar huge portion was served up with a smile. We started with the steaming hot soup and I kid you not there had to be a gallon of it, and it was good. On delivery the server gave us our first portion thereafter we were left to our own devices but despite our best efforts some soup went back. Next the duck and pancakes with cucumber and spring onion again we didn't finish all the pancakes. We had a 10 minute pause then the lazy Susan kicked back into action for the mains. The four main dishes were accommodated by a huge portion of fried rice, similarly on delivery, the first portion was doled out to us. Once again some rice went back. We chatted drank and joked the night away and then we realised all other diners like most of our food had gone so we called it a night and got gone too. We had beers, wine and on as well the set meal dishes we ordered separately portions of ribs, fried cashew nuts, seaweed and a salted chilli king prawn. I'd quietly handed over £200 at the start of the night, to the staff, to thwart our hosts paying. That worked perfectly and I was surprised to get change at the end of the meal. It's not haute cuisine yet it was a great experience and this place is worth support.

We were also given prawn crackers as soon as we came in. All delicious and served up quickly. For the mains we had the full Lobster in Ginger and Spring Onion Sauce (Oh. My. God ) and the King Neptune Speciality Seafood . We also ordered House Special Fried Rice, Crispy Seaweed and Mushroom And Cashew Noodles. Staff were wonderful, especially Sam, our waiter. The drinks and food were served very quickly and the atmosphere of the restaurant was lovely - quite busy for mid-week. Thank you to the chef and waiting staff for an enjoyable evening.

The food at Sky Chinese Cuisine was so good that we ended up coming here twice during our trip…read more Every dish tasted like it was prepared by a master Hong Kong chef. On our first visit, we ordered the pork intestine soup, which had an incredibly rich and flavorful broth packed with generous portions of meat and ingredients. The garlic string beans were another standout, with obvious wok hei and a perfect char that brought out their flavor. We also ordered the clay pot bean curd with lamb, and the combination of savory, comforting flavors made it one of our favorite dishes of the meal. The next day, we came back specifically for dim sum, and everything we tried was excellent. What makes this experience even more memorable is how we found the restaurant in the first place. We were originally planning to eat at Neptune's next door, but when we walked in, the owner asked if we had looked at the menu and whether we were sure we wanted to eat there. She explained that their flavors were geared more toward Western tastes, and when I asked where we could find authentic Chinese food, she immediately pointed us to Sky Chinese Cuisine. That recommendation turned out to be spot on. The biggest downside of this place is the ambiance. The interior feels dated and a bit run-down, and it certainly isn't somewhere you'd visit for the atmosphere. But once the food arrives, none of that matters. The quality, authenticity, and execution of the dishes more than make up for the lack of polish. If you're looking for outstanding Cantonese-style Chinese food rather than a fancy dining room, Sky Chinese Cuisine is absolutely worth the visit.

What I did see was a restaurant full of Chinese diners eating the very same food. Now if that is not a recommendation for a great restaurant ........

Finally came to check out Hei Hei for a Restaurant Week lunch on a Saturday. We called to book,…read morewhich we needn't have done, as we were the first to arrive when they opened at 1 pm. By the time we left an hour later, there were only about 3 or 4 tables of customers. The restaurant is very appealing - dimly lit with lots of black and red, good for an evening. When it's too quiet in there, the main sound you get is the Chinese pop music piped through the system. While the servers were very friendly, they don't all speak English - we tried to ask one a question, but she utterly couldn't understand us no matter what we did. Which is fine, just makes it slightly difficult to communicate a request. We started with a soup each - hot and sour, and chicken with sweetcorn. Both had that slightly thick, glutinous texture that Chinese soups have. I liked the roast pork strips in the hot and sour soup, making that one our clear favorite. The other soup was very mild and quite sweet from the corn, but not a whole lot going on otherwise. Honestly, I wouldn't really bother with either of them - they're fine, but they've got nothing on a lovely Thai soup with coconut milk and lemongrass. The next starter was crispy aromatic duck served with these very thin pancakes, hoisin sauce, and vegetables. These were actually great - we assembled them like little tacos. Loved the flavor of the hoisin, the crunchy vegetables, and the savory duck all together. The pancakes are so thin and light, they aren't too filling. For the mains, we got stir fried chicken and prawns with vegetables and cashew nuts served in a shredded potato basket, and crispy aromatic lamb in peking garlic sauce. We got a side of stir-fried pak choi, and "special" fried rice - I think it had some prawns in it. Both dishes were tasty - the lamb was the clear favorite. Although the presentation of the chicken/prawns was really cool, it was a very mild dish without much distinctive taste - just meat and vegetables in a sticky, shiny Chinese sauce. The lamb had a much stronger flavor, and was indeed crispy, and just felt really unique to have lamb at a Chinese restaurant. The sauce here was sticky too, but it was red and loaded with chili flakes, and was actually pretty good. Pak choi and rice were nothing very special - shame, as I love fried rice normally, but this was pretty bland. It's really hit or miss here. I'd come back again, but most of the dishes we had were just that typical sticky, gloopy Chinese food type. Not that they don't taste nice, but I just don't find that texture very appealing. I'd say, try the more unique offerings on the menu for the best bets, and you might get a pleasant surprise.
