Went with a large group (10) for dinner and loved it! They seated us at a large, round table and there was a lazy susan in the middle. Wine & beer orders were taken quickly, appetizers preferences made (meat, fish, veg) and while I'm sure someone made the dinner selections, I wasn't apart of that. The food was amazing. Pulled duck appetizers, something with shrimp and soups. The dinners were an array of Chinese dishes placed on the lazy susan in the middle from which we ate throughout the night. The waitress continued pouring massive amounts of wine so I apologize for the lack of detail...! If you have a large group, this is the perfect location. The round tables make conversations easy and the food is delicious.

My previous review remains completely the same…read more My this visit this week provided an opportunity to get some more dim sum and lots of it. What I did see was a restaurant full of Chinese diners eating the very same food. Now if that is not a recommendation for a great restaurant ........

I can't believe this place has only one review!…read more Since switching assignments and being in Newcastle this has quickly become a regular, you just can't beat Dim Sum. The plus sides... Dim Sum, glorious and well made Dim Sum. I truly believe it's made on site as the same orders vary quite a lot between visits... they are always consistent enough, but definitely change... that can be good and bad depending on your view, but I can't say I've ever been totally let down. This place is best suited for a group of adventorous friends who aren't scared to order a bunch of small dishes and share... my personal favourites include the Prawn and Chive Dumplings along with the Pork and Prawn Dumplings, along the lines of Sui Mai. Even when I haven't loved something here I usually chalk it up to personal taste, as with the Cheung Fun (a little too bland for me), I saw a Chinese lady beside me order two of them and scoff them up with delight... to each their own! Still, the Smashed Prawn Dumplings, Deep Fried Squid with Garlic, Salt, and Pepper, and so many other things hit the spot that I can't fault misses that are down to me ordering off of the beaten path. :) Oh, the Steamed Barbecue Pork Buns... just the right size and balance of flavour! (These are simple but often go wrong, not so here.) A tip, don't be scared to ask for a sauce... a few dishes come with their specific type, but a lot of the Dim Sum dishes could use a sauce of some sort but they don't tend to offer unless you ask... their happy enough to bring some over though when asked. I haven't ventured to the mains, other than the starter Deep Fried Squid with Garlic, Salt, and Pepper (with extra chilli, naturally), because I find it too fun to have variety and the mains look rather large... what I have seen looks good however, and there's normally large groups of people going for mains at various tables so I assume they're good. The only other down side is twice the pints have just seemed off so it may be best to stick to bottles (the pints aren't Asian as it is), BUT, that could also just be a fluke and/or down to me so I'm not ready to really knock them for that and I certainly haven't stopped going! The place itself is accessible from an elevator on the main street of Chinatown... how mysterious and a bit fun! (OK, fun is relative, but it's still kinda cool.) It's perfectly fitting, larger than expected, and generally pleasant so no real complaints there/ The staff are friendly enough and have even begun to remember some of my orders so they're definitely paying attention! I have to go five stars here because I feel like I would be a hypocrite to do otherwise... I've gone here so much, it speaks for itself and I'll be very sad to say goodbye to this place when I migrate next for work. If you don't like Chinese food or Dim Sum then obviously this won't be for you, but if you like Dim Sum then hopefully this place will rock your world and become a regular of your own.

Good food, but lacking service…read more Not to the standard of decent US Chinese restaurants in the Boston, NY and SF areas that I usually visit. The people are nice enough but slow and the food is adequate but limited. I have been to this restaurant three or four times over the last few years. They do provide parking but it is tight, smallish spaces, but most people are careful. There has usually been a wait for our table, but the waiting area is comfortable. The restaurant tends to be a little crowded, however not to the extent that it is a real problem, but they do like to serve as many people as they can. The space allowed for our latest party of four was fine though. We had to ask them to remove a few unnecessary items but we had a lot of dishes too. Services is usually fairly leisurely, they aren't in any particular hurry to take orders or deliver food, so it isn't somewhere to go if you are in a hurry. The food is very good, UK Chinese food can tend to be a little ordinary and bland, this is actually a good example of decent Chinese food. The menus tend to run to more interesting items than the usual chicken with cashew nuts or sweet and sour pork. But in the end it's a slow and slightly expensive way to get pretty decent food. It isn't somewhere I'd recommend visiting several times a month for example. Special occasions should be avoided. We had the severe misfortune to book dinner there on New Year's Eve 2011/2012. The fixed banquet menu was fine, we'd probably have ordered something similar though maybe less of it. So far so good. But nobody mentioned that this otherwise fairly classy restaurant had decided that a New Year's Eve dinner banquet at forty pounds a head should include a disco and karaoke 'show'. So what should have been a quiet and pleasurable dinner with friends turned in to a shouting match. We couldn't talk and the staff couldn't hear us. One table was in to the whole thing, they had a bunch of kids with them and the whole crew was stomping around the open areas and singing very badly to the thumping beat of the karaoke machine. We quit after the starters, we just couldn't see any point in holding on for the main course, so we took seven boxes home with us instead. They also slapped on a service charge. I paid it because I just wanted to leave. If you decide to go there on a special occasions you should ask for the full details before you commit. I did try to contact the management to see what they had to say but they ignored my emails (I live 5,000 miles away).

The prawn crackers (my favourite!!) are amongst the best I've ever tasted and the food has always been fantastic. Whenever someone I know goes I ask them to bring a bag of prawn crackers back for me! The staff are always lovely and friendly and very accommodating to anyone who may have special dietry requirements. There is a huge choice of meals available on the menu but each time we go we order one of the banquets. This way everyone can choose a different dish and we each get to sample the different foods. Prices are not cheap but they are reasonable as the quality of the food has never disappointed!

Finally came to check out Hei Hei for a Restaurant Week lunch on a Saturday. We called to book,…read morewhich we needn't have done, as we were the first to arrive when they opened at 1 pm. By the time we left an hour later, there were only about 3 or 4 tables of customers. The restaurant is very appealing - dimly lit with lots of black and red, good for an evening. When it's too quiet in there, the main sound you get is the Chinese pop music piped through the system. While the servers were very friendly, they don't all speak English - we tried to ask one a question, but she utterly couldn't understand us no matter what we did. Which is fine, just makes it slightly difficult to communicate a request. We started with a soup each - hot and sour, and chicken with sweetcorn. Both had that slightly thick, glutinous texture that Chinese soups have. I liked the roast pork strips in the hot and sour soup, making that one our clear favorite. The other soup was very mild and quite sweet from the corn, but not a whole lot going on otherwise. Honestly, I wouldn't really bother with either of them - they're fine, but they've got nothing on a lovely Thai soup with coconut milk and lemongrass. The next starter was crispy aromatic duck served with these very thin pancakes, hoisin sauce, and vegetables. These were actually great - we assembled them like little tacos. Loved the flavor of the hoisin, the crunchy vegetables, and the savory duck all together. The pancakes are so thin and light, they aren't too filling. For the mains, we got stir fried chicken and prawns with vegetables and cashew nuts served in a shredded potato basket, and crispy aromatic lamb in peking garlic sauce. We got a side of stir-fried pak choi, and "special" fried rice - I think it had some prawns in it. Both dishes were tasty - the lamb was the clear favorite. Although the presentation of the chicken/prawns was really cool, it was a very mild dish without much distinctive taste - just meat and vegetables in a sticky, shiny Chinese sauce. The lamb had a much stronger flavor, and was indeed crispy, and just felt really unique to have lamb at a Chinese restaurant. The sauce here was sticky too, but it was red and loaded with chili flakes, and was actually pretty good. Pak choi and rice were nothing very special - shame, as I love fried rice normally, but this was pretty bland. It's really hit or miss here. I'd come back again, but most of the dishes we had were just that typical sticky, gloopy Chinese food type. Not that they don't taste nice, but I just don't find that texture very appealing. I'd say, try the more unique offerings on the menu for the best bets, and you might get a pleasant surprise.
