During university, my friends and I would go and sweat it out our blood alcohol content from the night before in the aerobics or spin classes, and occasionally hit the gym to tone up in time for summer. And my mum would come swimming here, or take a water aerobics class in the indoor heated pool when recovering from knee surgery- the same pool that I came to during school swimming lessons every year. Even with upgrades, the buildings are old, the floors feel kinda gross coming out of the pools, and Ive seen so many saggy boobs in the changing rooms that Im scarred for life. But this place is for the locals. And I never realised, until writing this review, how many memories it holds for me.

During my time there, I was working fully remote from home due to my mental health and only leaving the house to swim at the centre and do grocery shopping once a week. I also drove everywhere. Although I am a little overweight, I am generally physically healthy and don't get sick easily. Since swimming at Eltham Leisure Centre, I have experienced various ailments each week, including a dry patch on my left eyelid which my GP thinks is a fungal infection (I have never experienced such a thing in my life), conjunctivitis, tonsilitis, and a ten-day cold, including a horrendous sore throat, headaches and fatigue. A couple of weeks into my use of the swimming pool and I noticed it was visibly extremely dirty. There were debris floating around everywhere including a used plaster, white bodily tissue and loads of sand at the bottom of the pool. I complained to the duty manager (red-haired young man) who informed me the vacuum had been broken for a week! I couldn't believe it. Surely this was a safety issue? The swimming pool should not have been open during that time. I waited four days before returning to the swimming pool (I had a target I needed to meet for mental and physical health) and apparently the vacuum was working again but the pool was still visibly dirty, only a little less than the week before. On another occasion, there was an awful smell as soon as I walked through the barriers. The air felt thick and unclean, and it was difficult to breathe. It seemed like there was a lack of ventilation/clean air. During week six when I was suffering from the cold (mentioned above), I cancelled my membership in anger. I had joined the Better Gym so I could get fit and healthy but instead, I've just become sick in many different ways. I emailed a complaint via the website and the Operations Service Manager responded to say they were doing the regular checks and the water is clean enough but clearly it isn't. I also posted on the Nextdoor app and a lot of people have agreed with me that Eltham Leisure Centre is filthy and they have left. Since then, I have contacted Better Gym and asked for a refund as the service they have provided has been extremely poor - to the point of dangerous as I was getting physically sick and this was aggravating my depression and anxiety - and they said they MAY offer a refund if I got a note from my GP. Getting a note from the doctor for a refund costs £30 so I sent them copies of medication receipts which confirms that I at least had to buy several medications (eye drop from my conjunctivitis and steroid creams for the fungal infection). They then offered a refund of £33 which I declined and insisted on a full refund of around £70. I received a one-liner to say I needed my GP to confirm I got sick from using the pool, however, while the doctor can confirm my symptoms, I'm not sure they can say for definite it is from using the swimming pool. You can only confirm this by doing a thorough investigation, which is not feasible and also, impossible now as the time/situation has passed. Better Gym has failed spectacularly and should refund the whole amount - not only for my physical issues but for the mental distress it caused me. I was relying on swimming frequently to lose weight, get fit and manage my mental health. I had just come off antidepressants and needed a simple routine - work from home and swim - and this worked for a couple of weeks until I noticed that I was getting a new ailment every week due to using the dirty swimming pool and facilities. Better Gym offered me hope but only made it harder for me to manage my life. As a result, I left Better Gym and searched for other swimming pools in the area but this was another challenge that I did not need to take on when trying to manage my mental health by living a simple life. Considering Better Gym is a successful chain gym and it is shameful that they are unwilling to refund the small amount of around £70 for failing to provide the service they have promised and putting my (and others) health at risk. People join leisure centres to get fit and healthy, not sick and this is what you can expect by joining Eltham Leisure Centre and other Better Gym facilities.

There's a café at the entrance that sells a variety of focaccias, salads, lasagna and pies. It's floor to ceiling windows overlook the wave pool, keeping a peaceful (and dry) atmosphere, without losing the feeling of being at the pool. There's also a little canteen inside the pool area that sells your regular fried food, lollies and ice creams. The center also has a gym upstairs (addition costs), two family change rooms, spa & sauna (additional cost), a warm wading pool, wave pool, kids pool, baby pool and outdoor pool. It also offers excellent disability services. Personally I try to only come during the morning, because the afternoon holds a lot of kids classes which take up all lanes except one (which makes it very difficult and squishy for the casuals like me). I also prefer the morning because well...its probably in my mind, but I swear the water is yellower and saltier the later it is in the day. I mean the water isn't crystal clear to begin with (so much chlorine you can only see 5-10m in front of you), but at least it's not murky...yet. If you're grossed out, the outdoor 50m pool has lovely water and you can see over 20m in front of you, but the hours are limited throughout the winter months. I still enjoy coming here, as it feels big and modern, and doesn't have that stuffy feeling that most little places have.

It gets quite busy on hot days and evenings however it is always pretty clean, aside from the odd leaf that falls off the beautiful big shady trees. There is plenty of grass area and you can take your pick between shade and full sun. A recent addition this summer includes some lounge chairs, however you'll need to get in quick to grab one of those. There are three pools in total - one with a slide for under 10's, a slightly larger and deeper one for older kids, and an Olympic size for laps and deeper water.

I enjoy the Pilates, body balance and yoga classes. Maybe also give Rez fit a go. I can also go to the pool and pop in the spa and steam room before or after. Only downer, ladies change room in aquatic section. The hot water cuts out and the water flow significantly decreases during peak hour shower usage. But I suppose you get that at most pool bathrooms and it's very difficult to address. But no big deal I just use the ladies gym shower and change. But overall I'm glad to have the gym and aquatic membership and enjoy being a member.

Although the steamroom needs a little maintenance...the paints starting to peel off on the walls, it still provides a great steam and is very relaxing! The prices are affordable for casual visits and hopefully they will provide good prices for memberships but pretty sure you need to talk to one of the helpful staff to arrange it and find out prices. The gym area looks new and clean and I look forward to using all the new equipment. You can hire a locker for $2 for 2 hours although the first attempt of hiring out a locker it ate my $2 coin and it didnt let me hire the locker but second time round I was succesful! You can pick up a brochure with all of the fitness classes and price lists at the front desk and also find them on the website which is very easy to use!

So making a special trip in for Virgin seems a little extreme. Moreover, at just $23 a fortnight, North Melbourne Recreation is a darn sight cheaper than the big V. Joining North Melbourne Rec gives you access to a surprising number of different facilities for that weeny price too... the basketball stadium (home court of the Melbourne Tigers), tennis courts, Carlton baths, North Melbourne swimming pool and of course, the gym. I generally go during off-peak hours so I can't comment on how busy it gets, but I've been impressed at how smoothly things seems to run during the more in-demand times. For those who are so inclined, it's probably also worth noting that as this is the home ground for the Melbourne Tigers (basketball) AND the North Melbourne Kangaroos (AFL) you often aren't short of eye candy. What it's really about for me though, is that it's clean, new and supervised. The latter being important for those of us who may have a nasty habit of passing out on occasion!

There is the usual 25m lap pool divided up in to fast, medium and slow but the big star of the North Melbourne pool isn't the lap pool. it is the three other, interconnected pools. Starting at a baby pool, which must only be a few centimeters deep and is totally covered by a shade cloth. This is connected by a small pebble path to a toddler pool, with steps and 'beach entry' so the little ones can approach it with ease. For those who don't know, a 'beach entry' is just a gentle sloping ramp from the side down to the bottom of the pool so it almost feels like a beach, if you ignore the lack of sand. The toddler pool is only partially covered by a shade cloth, so parents can get a tan as well as playing with the little ones. Next is the main pool, also connected by a pebble path to the toddler pool (I don't know why i found that so cool, maybe it was just the burble of the water or the more natural feel) The main pool is where all the action is! Like the toddler pool, it has steps and a 'beach entry' and steps. It has a few little ledges to sit on and for children to play, In the middle is a huge water umbrella to make sure you stay cool on the 40+ days. All in all this is a great pool for all ages!

Prices are reasonable with you paying fortnightly or upfront and having unlimited access to the pools with a swimming membership. Wade gets his lesson and one of us as his parents get in for free as well right up until he's 3! I recommend here every time someone asks about swimming lessons and even though the main reason we came here to begin with was the location and that it was close to home we definitely couldn't have picked a better place. They have a little cafe that you can buy food from and I must admit the food is great, especially their slices! There's food there for everyone. The prices are reasonable and if you're a member, you even get a discount! Discounts are always a win n my books.
