I've been to Waxy O'Connors twice before for a couple of drinks but this time was our first Sunday Roast here and we loved it! Even though it took them quite a long time to serve the food (the waiter passed our table three times before realising it was our food, sadly), the staff are very nice and helpful! We had the Turkey Sunday Roast and we ordered some extra Yorkshire puddings and gravy with it. The food was amazing, one of the best roasts we'd ever had! We also ordered sticky toffee pudding with custard for dessert which was also brilliant, but a bit too much after the massive roast. Definitely will be coming back for another roast soon! read more

Don't expect a smile or great service in this place. We had arrived at the Queen Station (Glasgow) and were desperate for something to eat. It is a get them in, fill them with food with extra salt so they'll buy more booze, kind of watering hole. They really killed that lamb hot pot, man. Way too much salt but the cider was exceptional. It is a standard pub catering to a crowd who are in the train station area. Nothing special. read more

We walked over to Waxy O'Connors to continue our night in Glasgow. Waxy O'Connors is an Irish pub located on George Street. We walked in and noticed the maze like interior and stained glass windows. I think it must have been a converted church or something but very cool nonetheless. There are bars on each level with flat screens showcasing sports. We commandeered a corner of one of the bars and enjoyed a few pints, shots, and cocktails. They only have the basic spirits here and have never heard of some cocktails my friends rattled off. Just tell them the ingredients and you should be good to go. Although, they don't have Fireball whiskey which was odd. It's a good place to get your drink on when it's raining out and they do have a food menu. Friendly bartenders and interesting architecture makes this a unique place in Glasgow. read more

I've been to Waxy's quite a few times but yesterday was my first proper visit where I stayed for a few drinks. We were in to watch the Rugby World Cup and the place was absolutely heaving - thankfully we'd arrived at a good time and then even managed to nab a table once the game had started. Waxy's is a traditional kind of pub and I love the layout - it really is a total maze and a fun place to explore. Lots of spaces seemed to be booked for private functions and there's a restaurant space, away from the rowdy rugby watching crowd. I was drinking cider and they had Blackthorn on tap which I actually don't really like but I still managed a couple of pints. All up, I actually quite like Waxy's and think it's a pretty interesting bar which is well worth a visit - just make sure you pay attention so you can find your way out again. read more

Terrific bartender that greeted us immediately! We sat at the bar, albeit there's a maize of stairs taking you on a fun journey to quaint & quiet spots or large gathering areas that are filled with tv's and sports fans. Wherever you choose, it's the most unique bar/pub I've ever been in. Food was off the small bites menu and was very good. Drinks were suggest by our bartender and were very good. The service was less than mediocre. Ordered nachos - in spite of being delivered promptly to the table, they were cold, soggy and quite frankly I wouldn't feed them to a dog. It was next to impossible to get someone on the wait staff's attention. Once we finally managed to get someone's attention we sent the nachos back and asked to settle our bill. I had to request a receipt which was unreadable. For the price of the food I expected at least edible food and decent service. read more

This is a really lovely pub. I've been a few times and I love the meandering walk through the different levels and bars. It's also handy as it is right next to Queen St station. We came here because it was on the tastecard 2-for1 and I had seen oysters on the menu! The oysters were perfectly chilled and just what I was expecting. Only £7.90 for the oysters not even taking into account the 2-for-1!!! My OH had the loaded wedges and these were just good pub grub. I had the Rib-Eye Steak Burger which was quite an average burger. It was again, good pub grub. I would come back because the meals were cheap. Even more so with the offer. It was very filling meal and a really good atmosphere. read more

Waxy's has the advantage of one of the coolest interiors of any pub I've ever been in. Inside it feels like a combination of a maze, a tree house and some kind of ship. It's all polished wood and there are multiple rooms and bars across goodness-knows how many floors. Pro tip: Never arrange to meet inside Waxy's - there's a very good chance you'll spend all night trying to figure out which of the bars your friends are hiding in. In spite of that it's far from my first choice as a place to eat or drink. While it's fantastic as a spot to show off to visiting friends it's less interesting to go to regularly. The beer list isn't too interesting - I recently heard a member of the bar staff recommend Tennant's to a visitor to Glasgow because it was made locally, I mean... I guess that's true but it can't have made the best impression. Then of course, I always feel like the beer is quite overpriced. Maybe it's the city centre location that does that? Maybe you're just paying for the cool bar? Who knows. Anyway, the food doesn't fair much better, it's fine but not amazing and quite expensive. I get the impression it's quite a good place to watch sport and it certainly has plenty of TVs but that's not really my thing. To be fair, it would also be a good choice for booking out a room for a group event or a party since they seem to have endless options for this. Otherwise though, there are plenty more bars in Glasgow and this one is far from the top of my list of favourites. read more

My family and I were in Glasgow to meet up with two friends who're leaving to go to England soon. Lots of us were going to congregate at Waxy O'Connor's to spend the evening together. However, when we arrived at the door, my daughter's way was barred! Now, my daughter is 25 years old. She's also tiny and has a very sweet young face, and for this reason they didn't believe she was old enough to get in. Their 'policy' was that you had to have proof in the form of a passport or a driving licence, and Jenny has never been out of the country, nor does she drive. So what was she to do? She has a Young Scot/Disability card, which has her date of birth on it, but it 'wasn't their policy to accept those'. How do I know it wasn't their policy? Because that's what the idiot on the door kept reiterating, no matter what we said. We weren't just dropping in somewhere for a drink. This was a special occasion we'd been looking forward to. The girls who were hosting it tried to help, but he was adamant. I asked to speak to the manager and he said he WAS the manager! And because he didn't like our repeated attempts to make him use some commonsense, he banned us. All of us. Even my son, who hadn't said a word throughout. We'd been really looking forward to the evening and it was ruined. I asked the manager who he'd have to answer to if he let us in? And his answer? It wasn't their policy etc. My daughter was in tears. So we got the train home to Dunblane. I've given one star, as it won't allow me to give none... read more

It just doesn't do it for me. After promising so much with an interior that makes you feel like you've just walked into middle earth, Waxy fails to deliver anything more than a bog standard O'Neill's. It tired "i'm Oirish so i am, to be sure" feel does little to add to the vibe and the flippin tree house labyrinth is cool to begin with until you pee yourself whilst looking for the toilet. This place also suffers from the city centre virus, meaning that on most weekend nights its filled with every dafty and their granny who commutes to the city for a night's drinking. Over priced, over rated and not a true reflection on the real pubs in Glasgow...do yourself a favour, jump the tube and get your arse to the west end or Charing cross. read more

I visited waxy's this weekend, the first time for 5 years, I forgot why I hadn't been in so long, then I remembered.... Upon walking in there seemed to be an uneasy atmosphere despite the cheery music and the staff seemed less than happy to be there - when I asked for a drinks menu I was told "it's just what you see" - the problem is my eyesights not the best, I'm guilty of only wearing glasses only when I absolutely need to. So I ordered two standard drinks I knew they would have, magners and a vodka and cranberry - £9.75, you would expect for those prices they would be competing with providing an exceptional service although I was left tempted to ask if I could get a smile with that; upon walking away I noticed on the bar there was a list labelled bar tarrif - would have been nice to see before I ordered the 500ml magners (not even the big one I know!) If you want to be ripped off then this is the place to be, as its right next to the train station I can only imagine they make the majority of their money off unsuspecting tourists and punters who wouldn't get let in anywhere half decent, why anyone would want to drink here regularly is beyond me. Turns out my one star on my previous review may have been a slight injustice. I recently returned to watch the rugby World Cup final and actually quite enjoyed my experience. The place was rammed, and that's some feat due to the size of the place. It's a popular place to watch rugby so there was a good atmosphere and the beer was flowing. I had a pint of chieftain IPA which actually tasted pretty good. I perhaps would not have bothered to update my review, but at half time they handed out some mini sausages and also some potato wedges which was a nice touch. I still don't think this place is anything great, buts it's not horrific. There is lots of separate bars within the venue that add something different and it's a good place to watch a rugby match, An average 3 stars is more fitting than the one I gave previously. read more

Waxy's is a half decent pub in a pretty bizarre environment. It has all of the usual Irish pub trappings, but does it all in a rabbit warren of half levels, staircases and nooks. Walking through here sober can be a bit confusing, so after a few pints it's definitely interesting. As a result there are a lot of different areas to suit your taste - there are areas where a guy with a guitar can play some tunes, tables for bigger groups, and spaces that feel more like and old man pub. The "church with a tree in the middle" feel of the main environment isn't to everyone's taste, but it's actually fairly light some somewhere that doesn't have any windows, and it isn't a bad place to have a pint - prices are pretty good, as is the selection of drinks. If you're with a reasonable sized group it's worth a try, but I don't know if it's somewhere I'd go out of choice. It's definitely better than the Wetherspoons pubs that are nearby, but I'm not a huge fan - I don't overly love themed pubs in general, so Waxy's is always going to struggle to be top of my list. However, if you want a reasonably priced pint in an unpretentious setting close to Queen Street then it isn't a bad option. Just make sure you know how to find your way out again! read more

Waxy O'Connors might sound like an Irish pub, and it is. But it has alot more character than your traditional Irish pub. If The Crystal Maze had a 'forest' zone, it would look like this. When I went in to meet friends "at the front near the window" I stumbled around the labyrinth inside, into an area that was closed off. A member of staff eating his lunch ushered me away, but without being confrontational. If anything, he was amused. It's a bit overwhelming inside at first, like the inside of a tree carved out by some sort of creature in a wizard movie. It is also very cosy, warm and (once you know where you are going) welcoming. There is music playing, but not loud enough to annoy you if you dont like it, or quiet enough that you cant enjoy it. You can bury yourself in a corner somewhere and have a good conversation. It is perfect for couples or small groups of people. The food itself is very good, and reasonably priced, with a generous portion of fish and chips greeting me when I went. You order at the bar which is a bit too Wetherspoon for some people, and the tables dont have numbers. Trying to explain to the barstaff where you are sitting can be a bit confusing. The prices of the drinks are a bit overpriced, standard Glasgow prices. I like Waxys. It is warm and allows for a bit of privacy with a small party. It is located near Queen Street and Central Station and the menu caters for anyone in your party. The interior may put some people off, but I quite like it. It has a bit of character! Definately worth a look. Oh, the toilets smell good too. read more

So waxes never somewhere that would be my first choice in place to drink but it was the Rugby World Cup and it's apparently a massive rugby bar! Busy was an understatement shoulder to shoulder the whole bar was packed.. Big screens to watch sporting events the atmosphere was on point. Nabbing the last table we had perfect viewing spots in the church bar. If in Glasgow looking for a pub for rugby I'd go here. It's not somewhere I would ever imagining myself eating in here but 2 hrs for sport is more than plenty. Half time? Free halftime snacks handed out sausages and mini fried potatoes!! An Irish bar? Really?! Cause I've grown up going to bars in Ireland and I ain't never seen anything like this. It's really an American interpreted Irish themed bar. You know, Shillelagh's all over the place. And a fake tree growing up throughout the bar. Seriously. That said I quite like it. And that's more because of the people. Folks that go here are just friendly. Which is super, given the number of lost souls you come across. The place is a total maze! Lots of different rooms etc. The library is a great wee bit for groups of up to about 20. Beer is OK but kinda expensive. This is one of the better, chilled places to be of a weekend. read more

Ah, the mythical Waxy's - where people always arrange to meet me just for the giggles. Let me explain... Waxy O'Connors in Glasgow is a cavern. It's massive. It's over several floors, with several bars, and full of nooks and crannies to sit in. It can take you ages to find anyone you're looking for. Indeed, I have a friend who was supposed to meet me in here back in 2007 and hasn't been seen since. Legend has it on a full moon you can hear their disembodied voice echo through the Church Bar asking for a pint of extra cold Guinness if you listen juuuuuust right. So yeah, it's big. But, it's welcoming too. All those nooks and crannies mean it doesn't feel like an ENORMOBAR like some other places in the city centre, naming no Wetherspoon names. Once you've found your friends, and grabbed a seat in a corner somewhere, it's a place where you tend to want to stay for just one more. Service is always quick and sharp here, and the staff unsurprisingly know their stuff when it comes to pouring a decent Guinness. I'd imagine that would be the law in here. Being an Irish themed bar, there are a wide range of real ales and beers on tap to choose from, and the ever present Irish whiskeys to drown your sorrows with because you've lost your friends somewhere... The food always seems to be popular, although being predominantly seafood based, it's not something I've ever braved. One day, I'll grab something in here and report back. Something that doesn't come from the water, obviously. In the meantime, Waxys is a place that's always fun to spend some time in with a big group. Give it a go, just leave a trail of breadcrumbs behind when you use the facilities... read more

It took me a wee while to be enticed in by its fiery goblets, but Waxy's won me over in the end. Externally, it looks like it might be a swanky chain pub. On the inside, it's more like a glimpse into a Tolkien realm. It is 3 floors of zany madness. I got lost on my way to the bathroom. Maze-y OConnors is something else! Organs carved out of wood and fairylights dangling from carvings of trees, it's a big ole folklore fantasy. It might be gothic, it might be Pagan, it most definitely is other worldly. I'm a big fan of a nice building, so I spent most of my time star gazing at the ceiling rather than checking out the booze. From what I could see, there were a few well stocked bars, which is all I ask for. What was worth noting was a good selection of 70s rock tunes and its gorgeous interiors. I am not sure how I really feel about Waxy's...I think its a bit of a maze if i'm honest! and not in a good way. I get that it's the style and what not...but really, can you imagine coming in, getting steaming and trying to find your way out? not a chance! Waxy's is like seven pubs in one, it's massive. One of the best Hogmanays I've ever had was in Waxy's a few years ago. I knew some of the staff via friends, so we ended up in one of the lower bars, watching BBC One on one of the big projection screens. It's quite an experience to have a great dram of whisky in one hand, shaking the hands of friends with the other, singing Auld Lang Syne at the top of your lungs, the bar staff up on the bar, and Jackie Bird, the alive one from the Corries and Paolo Nutini on the telly singing along with you. It's also a good place just to nip into if you're shopping or working in the City Centre and you want to grab a pint and a bite for lunch. But yeah, it's massive. Waxy's is by far the best Irish venue in Glasgow in my opinion. I have been visiting it for a few years, despite its expensive drink prices. For example a bottle of Miller and a pint of Stella both cost £3.30 (don't know why anyone would buy the Miller then if they had the choice). But I feel that the atmosphere inside Waxy's outweighs the dissappointment of the prices. Inside it is modelled like a very big treehouse, which I like very much. There are three different bars, several different floors, narrow staircases, a big balcony, you name it. Run-of-the-mill pub this ain't. It is a busy and very atmospheric place on a Friday or Saturday night and I often went here with a big group during my student days - it is ideal for this. Waxy's is definitely a real treasure trove among Glasgow's city centre bars. Irish pubs aren't even my thing but I still love this place. But why why why do the drinks have to be so damn expensive? read more

I love this pub. Although it seems a bit unfair to say this is just 'a pub' when it's more like three or four different bars all combined in one, maze like, layout. It's cozy, homily, and very relaxed. No music blaring, some areas do have screens showing sports, other areas are like little hidden cubbyholes away from everyone else. So regardless if you want to get a group of friends together for some drinks (prices are about on the cheaper side of average) or want to have a quiet drink with a loved one, it's got plenty of options for you! I was here for a planned event (office Christmas lunch) so we had an area set aside for us. The staff were excellent, friendly, joined in with the nonsense banter (we now have a tradition for measuring the circumference of people's heads... no I don't know why either!) and the buffet they laid out was excellent! It was a mixture of hot and cold foods, deep fried camembert, spicy chicken, roast potatoes, coleslaw, smoked salmon on hearty bread, chipolatas, to name but a few. Sweets included mince pies and a wonderfully sticky tiffin-like slice! There was more than enough to feed us twice over, which is saying something! On a Thursday evening we had problems finding anyone to offer a seat and as some have mentioned... it is a bit tricky finding your way around inside. The guinness with bangers and mash was tasty, the atmosphere was pleasant without being overbearing. Not the best place to go by yourself unless the downstairs bar is open. Waxy O'Connor's looks cool. It's a giant, labrynthine pub with a big ole tree in the middle that goes up and branches out over the several floors. To that end, it's a great place to go with a group and get some interesting and cozy spot with enough seats for everybody. The food is the kind of corporate-blah pub whatever-grub you'd expect from a chain. It's reliable but not amazing or remotely healthy. What I like best about this place--it's cavernous space with pockets of seating areas--is also it's biggest problem. You have to kiss your loved ones farewell and trek to the bar for your round, perhaps never to return before closing. *Edited to add - William's right, of course. It's a pretty redwood environment with stairs, wooden pillars and vintage booths. They have space to rent for your own events and have areas that have your own personal bar. My recommendation is, if your going in a group meet outside first. The place will make you feel like Sarah making your way through the labyrinth to the Goblin Kings castle, somehow ending back where you started. Food is under-whelming and the drinks are slightly above average in price. A good range of whiskey served though and the bar staff are usually easy on the eyes. Nice for a casual drink with friends during a shopping trip. read more

I'm with Briony on this one in opting for a solid four stars. Whilst I wouldn't make this a regular drinking spot of mine, it makes for a pleasant one-drink-stop. It feels like a giant tree maze; perfect for finding a cosy nook/cranny with friends, or equally, curled up with a suitably good book. It particularly reminds me of a bar I found on holiday in Poland's mountainous Zakopane several years ago; one that was also huge and rustic and tree-like. So, when I enter Waxy's, warm, Polish memories come rushing back and I crave that sweet and familiar cherry vodka. I quite like popping in here for one last drink If I've got a bit of a wait for a train. In the winter, even more so, as it's so warm and inviting. And the staff are pretty friendly too. It's one of the best bar interiors in the city so I can't just judge it on the food. It's like a cross between a forest, a church and Hogwarts. Particularly in the Church bar looking up, surrounded by gothic furniture and tree trunks, organ pipes and branches overhead and staircases that look like they might just swing round on their own, it's quite surreal, and quite confusing to the uninitiated. It is a multi-level, multi-room maze. My main problem with the place is actually the amount of traditional fiddle music it plays, too much, but saying that it's a good place to see live music informally. Getting to the food, well the food was fine, the burger was a good size, a little dry, but tasty enough. The chips were really nice though. Huge, chunky things, perfectly cooked. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, but if I was here anyway, well why not! read more

This use to be one of my favorite pub in Glasgow. So my friends and I ordered some steak and beef burger tonight. We have to wait for more than one and half hours to get our food. And it was the worst food we have ever had. I could hardly ate my burger as it is as hard as a stone. It was also so burned that it tastes like I am smoking. My friends can not cut their steak even though their ordered medium rare. And we paid 50 pounds for our food. What a wonderful place. read more

Very Irish, very dark, very busy on a Friday after work. I really liked the inside of Waxy's It looks like he inside of a tree and there is something quite magical and Disneyland-ish about it. All of the seating areas downstairs were reserved, so we managed to sneak onto a high table which was being taken over by the DJ at 8pm. It was so busy, although we got served at the bar no bother, by very smartly dressed bar staff. You don't get that in Glasgow very often! Drink and atmosphere fine but food dire. Fish and chips: Horrible reheated chips with skins on. Batter on fish soggy. Very little choice if you are a non meat-eater so won't be back to eat again. Toilets: Depending where you are seated, you have to climb one or two flights and it's stuck in a corner. I was told that the downstairs toilet only opened at weekends. Helllllo, what is a Friday night? There doesn't seem to be a disabled toilet because I was told the upstairs one was the only one available. Quirky, with all the different sections but easy to get lost. :D The menu stated there was acoustic music on at 5 p.m. but there was only background music. read more

A bit more like a trip to Pan's Labyrinth than your usual pub, Waxy's is a peculiar and in some ways strangely memorable venue. The sheer oddness to be had inside makes it somewhere I'd suggest visiting at least once just to have a look. It has a sprawling, maze-like layout , with countless nooks and crannies. As a result, finding the toilets, your friends, or even a bar can be a bit of a challenge, but the striking dark fantasy decor of the pub makes such chores a bit more interesting than an average slog. I find that the atmosphere rarely matches the looks though, perhaps down to it's location as somehow it still seems to exude the somewhat stale atmosphere of a commuter-filled train station bar. I've never been in on a weekend, but have seen a disheartening amount of hen parties smoking fags outside on Saturdays. I've a feeling the good-looking dullness of the weeknights is perhaps as good as it gets. read more

As a fresh-faced teenager from a nearby small town, Waxy O'Connors was one of the first pubs I visited in Glasgow. With it's central location I didn't have to venture out far for my first taste of a Glasgow drinking establishment - ironically in an Irish pub. My older brother who had experienced university life a couple of years before me often spoke of meandering here with friends to relax after lectures and so, from his tales, I conjured up an image of a quirky and charming place for those more sophisticated than I was at the time. With this impression in my mind, I was quite surprised at how large and yet intricate this pub was once inside myself. Rather insignificant on the outside, it's like a treehouse which opens up into lots of little areas - nine rooms, six bars and three floors - and indeed has a large tree in the centre as a navigational tool. This can be charming on first impressions but can get irritating when you walk around the same area a good few times looking for an empty seat without realizing that you have already been there twice or thrice within the last 15 minutes and then being unable to find the exit or the toilet. It can get very busy and on the one occasion that I ordered food here I had to wait almost an hour for it to arrive. Although it was very nice when it did eventually come I had to wolf it down as I was consequently running so late. Being a stone's throw away from Queen Street station and practically on the shopper's heaven Buchanan Street, I still visit every so often when I'm waiting for a train or need a short rest from shopping. It's pleasant enough but has lost a little of the charm I once associated it with. read more
