Service was relaxed but pretty good in general - this isn't the sort of place to rush things. The menu always looks pretty tasty, and manages be interesting and fresh. It's quite easy for gastropubs to fall into an unimaginative rut with their food. Totally forgot to borrow one of their menus at the end of the evening as it had some great ideas for dishes. I think the thing which put us off in the past was the slightly aloof service. I was offered tastes of several so that i could make up my mind. Kids had macaroni & cheese with a bucket of chips to share. The fillet and mushroom dish was divine. Creme Brulee was rich, and we shared a cheese plate as well. Yummy. Staff was cheerful and offered to take pictures for us, which turned out well. We all enjoyed the garden. Some patrons brought their dogs which were not unwelcome. I felt like I was at the home of a frien, who happened to be a fantastic cook!

I'd compare this with the Queens Arms (see my earlier review) as the nearest thing to it, although the Rose & Crown benefits from having a large garden out the back making this THE place to go when it's sunny. The pub is in a beautiful setting, great for walkers and not too far from town to be worth the trip. We regularly leave the car here and get a taxi back into Yeovil or Sherborne which sets us back less than a tenner. There's regular live music and a healthy following of locals who are always in there, regardless. I've introduced this place to a number of guys from work, who now regularly take clients here for lunch.

Desserts of chocolate and pecan brownie and banana fritters with toffee sauce were gobbled up. Ok, it's not cheap for a Devon pub, but the food is worth every penny - there was hardly anything on the menu I didn't want to scoff down. The pub itself is a charming sprawl of wooden rooms, and a small seating area out the front. It's homely and although the staff run a slick operation, they're still friendly and helpful. The pub was recently taken over by St Austell Brewery, so there's a good range of their beers, plus a couple of guest ales. This includes one local beer brewed in Branscombe. It's quaint, delicious, comfy and sits in one of the most stunning areas of the Devon coast. It is, quite simply, a perfect pub.

Once you go in, its warm and lovely inside with a real fire and staff that are about as passionate as you can get. And then you see the view. Its incredible. We luckily got there just in time to watch the sun set in the distance, over the stunning countryside. Perfect. Our dinner was outstanding. We paid just £150.00 for a 10 course tasting menu, bed and breakfast. Dinner was not off the standard menu, as my wife doesn't eat meat, however, Brett, the very talented owner/chef catered perfectly with dishes that include scallops, mackerel, risotto with pumpkin and black truffle, sea bass and salmon. I was even given a beef main course of fillet, a mini burger and braised beef with marrow bone. Incredible! After all the above, we had to endure desserts. Fortunately, they were equally good. Frozen pineapple ravioli followed by a crowd pleasing trio of chocolate deserts. To finish off, I fancied a brandy. They only had Somerset brandy - as I was told, they do EVERYTHING they can to keep everything local, including the brandy. I couldn't be happier. I spoke to Brett, the head chef and he said he was just happy cooking great food. I think if he carries on at the standard that he is currently at, he will certainly end up with 3 AA rosettes and maybe even a Michelin star. Its really that good. Back to breakfast. It was simply perfect. Great ingredients, the eggs are from the families own chickens in the garden, he bacon and sausage are from a local farm. All the ingredients are top class with great cooking. I have eaten breakfasts at 30+ venues in my home city of Birmingham. This would be the best. Its that good. It was certainly one of the best breakfasts I have ever eaten! Anyway, the food was super delicious as we had the jerked wings and curried goat. 3 wings were super spicy and 3 were jerked. The super spicy wasn't too bad though the owner gave us an unlabeled bottle of hot sauce to kick it up and umm....that was hot(spicy) - and I love spicy food. The jerked wings were delicious and meaty. The curried goat was incredible - moist and fell off the bone. I wish we would have gotten another order. This place has all the love of classic dive bars if that is your scene. Good music and friendly faces. Interesting fact -- the owner was going to sell it but the locals really wanted to hold on to it. He offered it to them if they could take up a collection and buy it -- and they did!
