I would consider myself more-so spoiled rather than an accredited critic, but let's just say I know what to look for in a good haircut and barbershop. That all being said... I've been struggling to find a good barber since i moved to GP last year. I went through bad haircut after bad haircut and tried 6 different barbershops in Grants Pass. Finally found G St. barbers. Drove by the shop and they had their front glass roll-up garage door wide open. Right away I liked the vibe. So I scheduled an appointment with Martine. The decor in the shop was very cool and the energy was very welcoming. Like a gentlemen's parlor should be. Behold I was finally blessed with a well trained and highly skillful barber who took much pride in his craft. I got not only what i asked for but he was unfortunately set up for failure by having to fix the disaster i was left with the day before from another local shop, which he hurdled right over with gracefulness and precision. The appointment was scheduled for 40 minutes, but it took nearly an hour. Unfortunately, despite taking extra time, the haircut wasn't even styled before we had to leave because we had ran out of time. During the haircut, the barber accidentally nicked, my godson, causing him to bleed. Mistakes can happen, but combined with everything else, it added to an already poor experience. What bothered me most was the atmosphere in The Shop. Throughout the appointment, another barber and a client were having an ongoing conversation that was inappropriate, especially with a child sitting just a few feet away. They made repeated disrespectful comments about women that were completely unprofessional. I realize barbershops are places where people talk and joke, but employees should know when a conversation isn't appropriate. The repeated comments about women were offensive and not something a thirteen year-old should have been listening to during a haircut. I also observed that this same barber did very little cleaning between clients. He barely brushed the hair off the chair before seating the next customer, and I didn't see him, sweep the area or sanitize between appointments. I was hoping for a professional, family, friendly experience, but unfortunately, this visit fell short of those expectations.
