We spent a weekend in the county seeing the sites and no trip is complete without a visit to a winery. The location and previous reviews were why we visited and we weren't disappointed. They have a lot of indoor seating and an event space and the outdoor seating is wonderful, especially if there's a nice breeze. We spent more than an hour just relaxing and enjoying the wine under the trees. I'd visit again. read more

I went to this winery for my sister's 60th birthday. It was on a night that they had a special Farm to Table seven course dinner accompanied by wines that go with the course. The wines were all good. There were about 20 of is in our party. The night started with a hay ride to center of vineyard and a taste of a sparkling rose. We got to see the grapes on the vines. Then we drove back to the winery and they did a tour. Some of the food wasn't the best ( I had the vegetarian option). I enjoyed trying new things! The jackfruit tasted like a shredded pork and was very good. The only course I didn't like was an eggplant. I would definitely reccomend trying and the owners are very nice and welcoming read more

Out on a country ride in Nottingham I had another of my "stumbled upons" which in this case means out of nowhere I am pulling into a driveway that says "wine" (Always a good thing) I got to meet a couple of the Wilson's who started this winery and they were personable and friendly. A mini wine tasting ensued and I am pleased to leave with their wonderful Riesling which is not sweet like Rieslings can be but what I consider mellow yet exciting. Fast forward 2 weeks and it was the hit of a family dinner. Second taste was Carmine. They bill it as a "mystery grape". It's a little on expensive side wine but I could not leave there without a bottle after the warmth and excitement in my tasting. I'm saving this for a special occasion which I am sure will wind up just being some frigid evening in January. Thought I heard someone behind the counter mention that the price may be coming down on this Carmine. If I find that it does, I'll be back for more bottles. I love supporting family owned businesses in the Delaware Valley. Praise be this winery is over an hour away from my house or I'd be here every weekend. read more

In all seriousness, we had an amazing time at Wayvine. Because of COVID-19 regulations they can't do tastings or sell wine by the glass, but they were offering flights (pre-set list) and bottles to purchase. The day we were there they didn't have any food trucks, but had some snack options and also let you bring your own food in if you wanted to. They have a great outdoor space that keeps you distanced from others, but still lets you enjoy being with your own group. Can't wait to be back again!! read more

Wilson is a 5-star in the wings. This is a micro family run winery in far southwest Chester county. They have turned a portion of the farm into vineyard and are busy growing some of what will certainly be some of the more exceptional grapes in Chester County and surrounding area. I love that they have combined the concepts of art and wine in a single location- two things that go together like pb&j in my opinion. A small foyer serves as the art display area, with a tasteful -if smallish -tasting room (no pun intended) and wine production room all-in-one. This is definitely off the beaten path- no signs out on rt10. You'll need a gps to locate it. They kind of want it that way right now- production is small and they simply can't handle any major volume yet. But what I really love is the wine. Believe it! You can buy quality wine in Chester county, I kid you not. For those of you that frequent the establishments that comprise our growing wine industry, a few standouts are taking PA to the next level. Va La is leading the charge- with Penns Wood, Galer picking up the pace. Even Stargazers with some of their more unusual wines for this area. Enter Wilson.... And their secret weapon. A 26 year old business major that found his passion in making wine and is earning his chops based on what is an obvious natural talent. As an avid aficionado I always visit and buy wine from the local producers. How else will they grow and mature if we don't support them? Sometimes I make pity buys or overpay for mediocre wine - it's called putting your money where your mouth is. Not this time. Every white and red, while young, showed amazing structure, flavor and depth. For a kid starting out, it is flat out incredible. We tasted 3 Chards - all different, a racy Alsace-style dry Riesling, a Merlot, a Barbera, and (although not commercially available yet) a Carmine that is going to be marvelous. Zach looks pretty much like you'd expect any 26 year old kid (ok young man) to, but he's not your average 26 year old. He has obvious talent for crafting quite drinkable and satisfying wine. The real question is- will he be able to scale and maintain or improve the quality he is at now? That will be his challenge, cause he's off to a fast start. I would love to see them create some unique blends, and I fervently hope they investigate my suggestion to grow Norton so I don't have to drive to Virginia to get my fix. Mom and Dad are both pitching in enthusiastically. They were fun to talk to, and are obviously enjoying themselves and their roles on this journey. With good tasting pours, enthusiastic conversation, an unpretentious attitude, its hard not to get caught up in the sheer joy of an afternoon enjoying (literally) the fruit of their labors. If you go, bring a little picnic and sit outside in the beautiful outdoor patio area on a warm day. In time, I expect Wilson to become one of the premier producers in our area. You might want to make the trip before success catch's up with them. And they might want to do a little name research, and consider their options before they spend too much on labels (hint - Napa valley has a Wlison already). Buy a few bottles and lay them down - I think "W" might just stand for "winners". read more

An impressive selection of high quality wines from a winemaker in their 20s, Wilson will your exceed expectations. A trip to Wilson has made me seriously reconsider my life choices. After all, the winemaker, Zachary Wilson, is in his mid-twenties, having started this winery on his parent's small farm on the weekends while attending Penn State (I think we graduated the same year). And yeah, you can see his CrossFit certification on the wall right next to the Penn State diploma in the modest tasting room in the lower level of the family home. It's really not fair. Walking inside that day, we were treated to a personal one on one tour of the art and crafts room (all available for purchase or perusing) and a personalized tasting, complete with our pourer, who I believe was an aunt, who did the tasting with us for "quality control." I love the sense of humor and personal touch, which you rarely receive at larger wineries. And she knew her wines inside and out. Needless to say, customer service was top-notch. You can taste the passion for quality and the support of a family-run business in the selection of wine Wilson produces. For a modest tasting fee of $10, we were able to try 7-8 wines, ranging from very good to spectacular. The highlights of the tasting were the 2014 Riesling, with crisp flavors of grapefruit and pear, the 2014 Oaked Chardonnay, in which I loved that full-bodied rich oak flavor, the 2013 Barbera, a lighter red that still came through with good tannins and pepper on the finish, and the 2012 Merlot Reserve, a complex dark fruit and robust dark chocolate flavor wine. I could've easily purchased every wine on that list, including nearly blind-buying the 2012 Carmine ("Mystery Grape" - the result of a mix up with their grape seed supplier), the winery's first medal winner (I'm sure the first of many). The only drawback with Wilson Vineyard is I live nearly an hour away, otherwise I'd be a regular. Wilson is one of the area's best kept secrets, and it's only a matter of time before the place really takes off in popularity and begins to compete with nearby Galer, Penn's Woods, and yes, even Va La. read more

Wow! I'm so impressed. We visited Wayvine today and had a wonderful experience! Everyone who works here is so friendly and welcoming. My husband and I each did a tasting. You get to try 7 of their delicious wines for $10. I honestly loved everything we tried. My favorite white was the unoaked Chardonnay, but I enjoyed them all. They also had a rose and 3 reds. The dry rose was perfect. My husband especially loves the reds, a merlot, Cabernet franc, and carmine. They have a beautiful patio where you can do the tasting or sit and enjoy a glass. My husband and I bought a few bottles, including the Sauvignon Blanc and Oaked Chardonnay which are not available for the tasting, but sound to good not to try. We will definitely be back. They also have a field with sunflowers where we stopped to take a few photos. read more

We enjoyed a relaxing afternoon here recently tasting the Wilson family wines. It's a rustic, homey setting with local art displayed and for sale. The tastings were fun and we all thought the wine was good. The family/staff are friendly and knowledgeable. My favorite was a Sauvignon Blanc but I unexpectedly also enjoyed the unoaked Chardonnay. They produce both oaked and unoaked and we were able to taste and compare both. We'll be back! read more

My Husband's Father's Day gift was a one year membership to a winery in Chester County that my daughter, a wine enthusiast, had discovered. We decided to head to Wayvine this past Friday for an evening outdoors and to retrieve our first six bottles of wine. The one hour drive was more than worth the time. The Wilson family was as excited for my husband as he was, and they made our first visit so perfect. Having visited multiple California and Oregon vineyards, we have a high standard and didn't expect that Wayvine wines could have been so amazing, every bit as wonderful as the wines we enjoyed on the West Coast. The reds were full and the whites and rose were refreshing. Zach, the winemaker is young and passionate about his art, and his mother Nancy couldn't be any more welcoming. We were texting our kids and couples we socialize with as we sat in the vineyard, listening to a wonderful singer, telling them that they all have to get to Wayvine. We stopped by Wayvine on the way home from Lititiz, PA. It was our first time and definitely won't be our last. This winery is really wonderful. The owner is super accommodating. She insisted we sit in the best seats overlooking the vineyard and she would do our tasting from there. Then she brought the wines one-by-one to us to try. All the wines were really great but our favorite was the "mistake" oaked Chardonnay. Apparently the barrels were a little too charred and the wine turned out very, very oaky. Some people may not love it but if you really enjoy bourbons and whiskies, this wine will knock your socks off. And it's essentially limited edition because they won't make that mistake again so get it while you can. I can't wait to go back and see if they make any more mistakes! :) read more

Wilson Vineyards is a true gem in the Chester County countryside. The winery is a family affair with each member contributing his or her own talent to the vineyard. The winemaker, Zach, believes that each grape varietal they grow should have its own stage to be enjoyed by making 100% single varietal wines (Chardonnay- aged in oak barrels and steel vat fermented, Sauvignon Blanc, dry Riesling, Barbera, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Carmine with more varietals be grown in the future). Each wine tasted was an expression of the varietal's full potential. The Chardonnay was out of this world and the Barbera was full bodied and delicious. The wine speaks for itself. Every wine that we tasted was beyond expectation and a testament that with hard work and passion comes beautiful results. The over 13 acre vineyard is on the grounds of the families farm with the three car garage being converted into the tasting room. The winery also has a small art gallery and exhibits local arts and crafts. The quality of wine being produced from this vineyard is sure to bring expansion and more notoriety in the future so plan your trip soon before the tour buses start to line up! After driving an hour and a half to get to the vineyard and enjoying the wine as much as we did, we decided to leave with two cases of their wine. However, it is the hospitality and welcoming environment created by the family that will make us and you want to return with your family and friends again and again. The mother of the wine maker does the tastings and makes you feel like you are having a glass of wine with a friend whom you haven't seen in years. The experience was so enjoyable that we had planned on going to two other vineyards in the area but never left Wilson Vineyard! Well my wife and myself plus 5 other friends made the trek down today. Before I describe our experience please know this; we travel and review wineries and breweries for vacations. Next week we're headed back to the finger lakes for the 4th time. All I can say about wayvine us this. Go. Just go. I can't believe wines of this quality and range are being made now in PA and an hour from our home. Our party of 7 5 of whom we travel with regularly to Sonoma and Nappa and Fingerlakes were totally awestruck. Never has a PA winery done such a magnificent job over such a range. I cannot get over this. We all bought mixed cases and went to a BOB and drank the heck out of them. Of you like wine and are in the Baltimore or Philadelphia suburbs, go. Do they walk... Although a growing number of wineries welcome dogs, you should banish any thought about bringing your dog here. My husband and I made a big mistake in trying to visit with our dog while on a road trip. We parked and approached the main house from the back, because we could see a lush yard that gave way to a large patio with several tables and people enjoying their wine. My husband had walked ahead and reached the patio first, while I was still on the back lawn with our dog Chelsea (a corgi-spaniel mix?), who was leashed. Then we saw the owner's dog, not leashed. As the dog began to approach us from the patio, I heard a woman yell "No dogs!" Chelsea and I stopped. The other dog (a black lab or mix?) kept coming, trotting steadily now until s/he was in Chelsea's face. I don't know who started it, but within seconds, they were clawing at each other. The other dog was trying to get its jaws around Chelsea's neck. I tried to back up and pull Chelsea away while also pushing the other dog off of her. Turns out that doubling over and backing up downhill is a perfect way to start a backward summersault. As I scooped up my dog, we rolled together. I came out of the roll on all fours, with my right arm in a clump of mud and Chelsea scooting out from underneath me. The other dog was gone, apparently galled by our gymnastic prowess. My husband was inexplicably still on the patio, as was the apparent owner - the woman who had yelled "no dogs!" I heard them negotiating some kind of peaceful accord that involved me putting Chelsea in the car and coming back with my muddied self to kick back and sip wine. No one bothered to check on me or Chelsea to see if we were ok. As I extracted my hand from the mud, I knew there was no way in H*ll I was staying. I took Chelsea to the car, made sure she wasn't hurt, and walked back to the patio. My husband and the owner were talking. She smiled and was friendly as I approached. I was not so amicable and told her that we were not staying, because her dog had just attacked. I suggested that she should keep the dog leashed or in the house. She explained that the house was her home and that "we aren't dog-friendly." I told her that she should put up a sign then and that she didn't seem very people-friendly either, given that my dog and I had just tumbled down her hill and she didn't seem concerned about either of us. She said several times that she was sorry, but this apology was always negated by some other comment, to the effect that we should have known better than to bring a dog to an outdoor space at a winery. So we left. After we were back in the car and on the road, I learned that my husband hadn't seen me tumble down the hill with our dog, and probably no one else had seen it either. So that at least partly explains why everyone was so blasé about our wellbeing and expected me to just grab a glass and chill. (Meanwhile, I thought everyone had seen, and was equal parts pissed and embarrassed.) My advice is still the same. If you find this place on Yelp! like we did and are thinking about visiting with a dog - think again. And to the owner - please do put a "no dogs" sign in your driveway, and maybe on your website. read more

This is not what you think of when you hear PA Wines, not even close. Wayvine is the real deal. We met the Wayvine team a wine tasting in the city, bought a case on the spot, and we were hooked. We had a dinner set up at Talulahs Table in Kennett Square this past Tuesday, and asked Wayvine if they would give us a tasting on Tuesday prior so we could buy more wine for dinner that night (and to take home). Zach kindly obliged and had us in for a tasting and tour of the winery. It's spectacular, the wines, the tasting room, the people (you will not meet better people), the vineyard. We will be going back soon, and you should go as soon as possible. If in Philly, spread the word to local restaurants as well!
