Art is important. Public radio is important. I'm so pleased that there's an outlet like 88.9 WDNA that combine the two into relaxing, inspiring, soul-lifting music. Jazz is as American as apple pie and as traditional an art form as we know in these United States. As a former resident of New Orleans and Chicago, I can honestly say that listening to jazz -- really, actively listening, feeling and absorbing jazz -- is a musical treat that, for me, has no equal. The programming highlights both local, national and international versions of the art form and, as a listener, it's thrilling to meditate on all the variations on a theme. We are more alike than unalike. In addition to the groovy tunes coming from the dial, the physical studio space is also rather impressive. The main room houses a rotation collection of art pieces that educate and entertain. When I was there, they were wrapping up an interactive exhibit where one could press a button and hear music/biography of the musician wt which he gazed. I really enjoyed it primarily because of Celia Cruz. How one can look at a picture of that woman or hear her music and not smile, dance and slap someone (just because; azucar!), I don't know. Leaving the main room, I was fortunate to get a tour of the music collection and studios at the station. I have long been enamored of radio and seeing the volumes of CDs, records and tapes and thinking about their importance to not only the world of music, but culture, history, celebration, and peace... it's pretty overwhelming. Become an active global citizen by participating in the wonders of local music. It's good for the soul.

For an EDM purist…read morelike myself who grew up going to warehouse raves, who despite being "in my 40's" still puts in for vacation during Miami Music Week and Ultra, this radio station was heaven! This WAS where you could get all the greats (Armin Van Buuren, Pete Tong, etc) and jam out any time of the day. Even when I snuck out for lunch I could still break out glowsticks and rage to any type of obscure trance (real stuff, not David Guetta!) Imagine my disgust when two months back I heard a Rihanna track followed by some nameless pop "star". Compound that disgust when my ears were assaulted by the trashy GT or JT or whatever who used to be on Power 96 along with his annoying "fake news" contest. Come to find out that they now employ a "96" alum and have taken themselves down to that level in order to reach a greater audience. To their credit, they still have some Pete Tong and they have their downtempo EDM "Detox" show, as well as a few classic trance tracks. However, I now find myself switching the dial away more often (yes, I listen to other types of music but there's a time and a place and a mood). I hope they do go back to pure trance, even if they have to go listener-supported.

Specifically, old school hip hop like when Pitbull was hardcore and I was going to be the first white member of NWA. I'm talking about the golden age of hiphop, from the 90's to about 2006. Nothing wrong with Cardi B, but I have no patience for the so called mumble "rap". (Yes, I'm one of those who knows that Tupac lives!) A local radio station heard mostly just in city of Miami, 92.7 gets it right. At least in the evening, they play more of the "full / uncensored" version of songs. The afternoon drive show with DJ LS has an interactive part thru their IG account. Plus they play lots of Tupac and Biggie. So far their playlist is varied without the repetition of commercial stations. I also can't stress enough how they jam all the classics from the good old days, including long lost ones like Aaliyah, Dru Hill and Cypress Hill. Please don't change!
