For an EDM purist…read morelike myself who grew up going to warehouse raves, who despite being "in my 40's" still puts in for vacation during Miami Music Week and Ultra, this radio station was heaven! This WAS where you could get all the greats (Armin Van Buuren, Pete Tong, etc) and jam out any time of the day. Even when I snuck out for lunch I could still break out glowsticks and rage to any type of obscure trance (real stuff, not David Guetta!) Imagine my disgust when two months back I heard a Rihanna track followed by some nameless pop "star". Compound that disgust when my ears were assaulted by the trashy GT or JT or whatever who used to be on Power 96 along with his annoying "fake news" contest. Come to find out that they now employ a "96" alum and have taken themselves down to that level in order to reach a greater audience. To their credit, they still have some Pete Tong and they have their downtempo EDM "Detox" show, as well as a few classic trance tracks. However, I now find myself switching the dial away more often (yes, I listen to other types of music but there's a time and a place and a mood). I hope they do go back to pure trance, even if they have to go listener-supported.

Now we have to deal with JP and Lucy or Gigi, I don't even know the names because they all sound the same with the same annoying routines. South Florida is jam packed with pop/Top 40 stations, and we needed some diversity on the radio with decent music! I love that The Shark plays alternative music and also up and coming indie music as well. I like that the DJs don't talk too much at any point in the day and you don't hear too many commercials either. I love listening to The Big Mistake with Ashley O and Spanish, they're both very funny and witty, but they also play a lot of music in the mornings at the same time. The station has a lot of consistent prize giveaways and I've also had the opportunity to take advantage of the Shark out of Water concerts as well for being part of the Chum Club. Be sure to turn on the Shark for a listen if you're in the South Florida area!

All of the djs are articulate as well as entertaining, and I like the morning show, "The Big Mistake," because they have a good amount of talk, humor, and music. (It seems that many of the other local morning shows are mostly talk with little, or no, music.) The Shark was also the main sponsor of The Riptide Musical Festival in early December. It was an incredible event with several stages, great activities, bars, and food....right on Fort Lauderdale Beach. Riptide's lineup was amazing: Panic at the Disco, 311, Live, Third Eye Blind, Collective Soul, Everclear, Sublime with Rome; and then there were many new artists: Blue October, Robert Delong, Alice Merton, and more. It seems they are always promoting some concert or another and I hope they will be around for a long time! They fill a much needed space in the air waves of South Florida.

The guy there lets me DJ once a month on their state of the art equipment, although the needle on the left turntable is always messed up so I have to bring my own from home. I looked up Jolts on Yelp but didn't see them, they're still just a small, modest mom n pop operation. I created their page here so I could write a review and share with the world my experiences at Jolts. There's a guy who likes to hang out there on the days I go, his name is Robbbie Brandy (like the drink). He's always playing music from genres I've never heard of like grindcore, power electronics, national socialist black metal, doom gaze, sound puzzle, bukkake-core, Chinese Opera, no-fi, ...just to name a few. I guess u can say Jolts is pretty "eclectic" with their programming. The Jolts studio itself is located at an up-and-coming block in historical Allapattah which is slowly but surely being gentrifried by artist studios and stores selling yoga pants for babies. But don't dismay, Jolts is the REAL DEAL. A creative platform that gives a voice to their community. I travel there once a month from Fort Lauderdale, so I certainly know what community is all about. PROS: Being able to be a part of Jolts' creative community. I get a free glass of water every time I go, in an actual GLASS! CONS: Google maps didn't let me know about traffic on I95, so I got there late yesterday.

Only needed one. Entree: Apollo's Famous Prime Burger. I liked the burger, however, there was a strong taste of whatever method is used to cook the burger. I cant quite out my finger on it. It came with fries. They didnt have ketchup, but provided me with a cilantro sauce which actually paired better with the fries. Dessert: Vice City Tres Leches: DELICIOUS. Be ware if you cant finish it. They dont have a good method of it being to go due to how it's served. I did ask for a to go box anyways lol. Maybe try the to go box and see if they have saran wrap. The leche will escape the box. After dinner: French tea. Served hot in the most beautiful tea pot. I drank it as is. The live Jazz music was a bonus. We really enjoyed the music. They even performed a Bruno Mars song. A time was had. The staff was attentive and knowledgable. No complaints th I will be going back.

There was already a crowd outside waiting for the next seating, and once inside, the intimate setup immediately stood out. With only about a dozen tables, a tiny bar, and the rest of the room dedicated to the stage, it feels exclusive without being pretentious. We sat at the VIP table tucked off to the side. At first, I wondered if the view would be limited, but it ended up being one of the coolest seats in the house. Watching the performers through the side curtains gave everything a romantic, vintage feel, while looking out across the room made it feel like you were hosting the evening. A special shout-out to our server, Arlene. She was hilarious, quick-witted, attentive, and timed everything perfectly. She even brought dessert out at just the right moment so we could enjoy it while finishing the show without feeling rushed. The only disappointment was that the grill was down that evening, so most of the beef entrées weren't available. Thankfully, I had planned on ordering the salmon anyway, and it was cooked perfectly. Just know that if you're coming specifically for a steak, you may want to confirm availability first. The passion fruit cheesecake was much sweeter than I expected, but still delicious. And then there's the jazz. Miami doesn't have nearly enough places like this. The musicians were talented, and the atmosphere alone is worth the visit. If you're a serious jazz fan, you may wish there was a little more improvisation and a little less sticking to the standard arrangements. The vocalist was good, but none of the performances were particularly unforgettable. Still, that's not really why you come here. You come for an intimate room, live jazz, attentive service, great ambiance, and a memorable night out. Armstrong Jazz House absolutely delivers on that. I'll definitely be back.
