I like that there is finally a mag in Richmond that promotes healthy living as Richmond has never been known to do so in the past. I know there are tons of athletes here, you just never hear about us in the same league as other cities when it comes to healthy living.....could be that Tobacco Capitol thing though heh? The articles I like are "Training Table" and "Ask the sports medicine physician". There are also great articles in this latest issue about fun on the James River called "River Whirl" that gives a comprehensive view of getting the most out of our cities' river bounty. Other articles on Kickball, cross country cycling, James River Trail System and those making a difference in the health and sporting community all make for a great read. I am glad I found this great quarterly.

Well over a year ago, my iPod decided to shoot itself in its little face, and it's never been the…read moresame since. I had to go back to using my REGULAR RADIO [good god, no...]. Fast forward to the present. I found a way to coerce the ol' iPod into working again, but day in and day out, I find that I prefer actually learning something about the world while I take my morning commute. 9 times out of 10 I'm tuning in to 97.3FM to hear the broad range of local and international talk, news, and music radio. Not to say that I don't get down with some Morning Edition and All Things Considered on 88.9, but sometimes you need to hear journalism from a little outside of your comfort zone. 97.3FM is the only place in the area that you can tune in to Democracy Now, Harry Shearer's Le Show, Tell Me More with Michel Martin, and Talk of the Nation with Neal Conan, among many, many other programs through the day. Also once a week, history nerds can get stoked on listening to Clay Jenkinson on the Thomas Jefferson Hour, and food nerds can drool while listening to Lynne Rossetto Kasper's The Splendid Table. And sometimes I get effing tired of listening to classical and jazz music ad nauseum. There, I said it. I said what's really on the minds of public radio listeners. 97.3FM really mixes up the musical offerings around RVA, and in any one night you can expect to hear punk, jazz, funk, hip-hop, zydeco, country, rockabilly, "folk," or whatever. The only downside is the very limited broadcast area, due to the "Low Power" designation. Depending on the day, I have reception north to past VCC, south to around 288, east to just past the airport, and west past Short Pump. Tune in and check it out. There's something for everyone on WRIR.

I particularly enjoyed the story about the sales slump following implementation of the city cigarette tax. It was well written, well researched and included interviews with a number of local merchants. I'd like to have seen some comment from the politicians who voted for the tax. Richmond Guide is a little local magazine that I always pick up at one of my favorite breakfast…read morespots. I would assume it is widely circulated but I went on the web site and they didn't list where it could be picked up. However, luckily enough, you can read the issue right on line (see? it pays to do a little research). The best article in the current magazine is by Walter Griggs who always does a great job picking out interesting tidbits of Richmond history. This particular article talks about the time when the "Train of the Future" came to the still open Broad Street Train Station (now the Science Museum of Virginia). The account is a wonderful glimpse into a world when trains were still "high tech" and things of wonder. There is also a great article on "Urban Playground" which sheds light on some great places for the urban sportsman and adventurer. It focuses on Richmond's bike and hiking trails, white water rafting, and climbing spots. I definitely learned something new for sure. The magazine is a handy size and is divided into dining, lodging, events, galleries, performing arts, exploring and "Spring" (they do a season for each publication) There are many local publications that spotlight the happenings going on in Richmond, "Style" and "Brick" first come to mind, but the Richmond Guide never fails to tell me something new about my city. This, accompanied by the fact that it isn't trying to be anything else, makes it worth picking up.

Brick Magazine is the local "indie rag" that seems to be expanding its reach around town. A go to…read morefor those in the music scene and with a hipster bent. Sharing some of the demographics that make Style Magazine so popular, Brick seems to be cutting out a niche of younger readers left in the dust by Style many years ago. Brick focuses on live music, cultural events, and art happenings around town and the region. The See It, Hear It, and Do It sections are all devoted to these genres. Brick comes out every Thursday and is easy to grab at local downtown, Fan, Museum District and Carytown restaurants and hipper businesses. Lastly the Find It sections include classifieds, great comics, and ends up with the crossword at "Solve It". A good little rag to keep up with the more underground happenings, especially in the live music scene for sure.
