What I like best about the park are the mature trees that provide lots of shade. Some of the trees are over 400 years old. There is a huge colorful playground with climbing structures, swings and slides. The base is a mix of mulch and soft matting. Benches line the area for parents to sit and watch kids . (The equipment could use a good cleaning from the trees.) There are two ball diamonds with bleachers within the park. A beautiful stream that meanders through the park attracts fisherman. Tree-covered picnic areas are scattered along the creek. The Vermont Covered Bridge spans the creek and is open to pedestrian traffic. There are restroom facilities near the playground. There are several parking areas throughout the park and you can drive along the creek. Highland Park is a great place to bring the family.

We rented the Rogers Pavilion at Highland Park for our family reunion in August. We booked it about…read morea year in advance since we have our family reunion every August, and we wanted to make sure we could get the date we needed. The pavilion was around $250 for pretty much the entire day, which I thought was a great price for the amount of time and space you get. We really like this park because there's plenty of space and lots of parking. There's also a playground directly across the street that's suitable for kids of different ages, along with a basketball court. The pavilion itself has plenty of tables and chairs, you just have to set them up yourself. There's also a small kitchen, which is very convenient, along with two gender neutral restrooms on each side of the kitchen. The only downside is that the grill provided with the pavilion is a little bit of a walk from the indoor area. There's also another covered pavilion with seating between the grill and the Rogers Pavilion. There happened to be another event going on there during our reunion. It didn't interfere with our event, but of course, having the entire area private would have been even better. I really like this pavilion and think it's a great place to host an event. There's plenty of space, lots of parking, and activities for all ages. I'd definitely consider renting it again for future family events!

It was one of the nicest parks I found all day! The park serves as a spot for everyone. There is a pond as well as having the river run by the west side of the park. There are baseball fields. There is a really nice playground with plenty of parking, shade, restrooms, and a series of swings that are fully accessible for kids with physical challenges. There are 43 hand-carved animals that date back to at least 1902...with several believed to be traced back to about 1885! We had a nice little tour with Ernie, who has worked at the carousel for over 50 years! We learned all about this unique and rare carousel--which is one of only 2 that remain in existence!

That's precisely what the city of Kokomo has done with the Industrial Heritage Trail, a just under six-mile rail-trail that links together historic industrial sites in Kokomo's history. The trail runs through downtown Kokomo while also connecting to the much larger Nickel Plate Trail and Kokomo's really cool Wildcat Creek Walk of Excellence. You'll catch such sites as: The Kokomo Rubber Company, which produced the first pneumatic rubber tire in the U.S. Haynes Automobile Company, which introduced America to the auto. Both Chrysler and Kokomo Opalescent Glass are near the trail (which also has a cool piece of public art). The trail includes historic markers and has places to rest along the trail. As I'm a wheelchair user, I can affirm the trail is wheelchair friendly. It's for the most part a level trail. It's also primarily an urban trail. The Nickel Plate Depot is the primary trailhead for the trail and you can find parking typically around it or along the streets. The Industrial Heritage Trail is not what I'd call a destination trail, though Kokomo has a nice enough system of trails that it would be worth spending the day in Kokomo to try them out. The Nickel Plate alone could easily be called a destination trail and is quite beautiful.

There are a number of historic information signs along the trail talking about groundbreaking industry from Kokomo's past such as Kokomo Rubber Company who made the first inflatable tires and Haynes Automobile Company. The Industrial Heritage Trail connects to the Nickel Plate trail, so I used it to add another 6 miles to my ride. There's a lot of rail history along the route. There's a large depot that now has restaurants as well as some trackside equipment. There are a couple of nice parks and the trail runs right through downtown past the courthouse. It's a nice extension to the Nickel Plate.

It has the Kokomo Arts Pavilion with lots of lawn space too. There's also the canal walk that has a bronze sculpture and a butterfly mural as you approach Washington Street. For activities, there is a baseball field, basketball court, lots of tennis courts, and a pedestrian bridge over the canal to the "Beaches" of Kokomo water park. For younger visitors, there is a delightful bright playground near the pavilion that has a gorilla statue watching over it! And up on the corner, there is a real tank on display. Free parking lines the north border of the park and there is some additional parking in the park on the west end. When you think of Indiana's trails, you most likely think of the bigger trails like the Cardinal…read moreGreenway, Nickel Plate, Central Indiana's Monon Trail, or even the Pumpkinvine. You don't likely think about the Sweetser Switch Trail. You should. This is a delightful trail, a connector to the nearby Cardinal Greenway that runs the full-length of the small town of Sweetser, Indiana. The trail is a three-mile long rail-trail. This means it runs along a railway for pretty much its entire length. It's fully paved and a mostly gentle trail. As a wheelchair user myself, I can fully attest to its accessibility. There's ample parking at nearly every crossing road and, trust me, Sweetser loves its little but memorable trail. The trail allows for biking, walking, running, use by wheelchairs, roller blading, and horseback riding. Sweetser is located in Grant County - so, it's definitely worth of a day trip with a stop in Sweetser then possibly five more miles over to Marion. This trail is part of the American Discovery Trail and despite being only three miles in length you'll see two covered bridges (over Pipe Creek) and you'll even see some train equipment. You'll even see a statue of Garfield commemorating Hoosier and Garfield creator Jim Davis who grew up nearby. Grant County has about 13.5 miles of paved trail these days. Thus, you could easily give yourself a decent half-marathon run and stay in Grant County. Just east of downtown Sweetser the trail is even lit so that you could do an evening run. During the better weather seasons, you'll definitely see bird boxes, picnic shelters, and an old-fashioned water pump. Quite honestly, this is a beautiful little trail that is well maintained. Since it really stays within Sweetser, there's a pretty good chance you're going to actually encounter people along the route. As a couple of fun facts, the first mile of the trail was funded entirely by donations AND the entire trail was developed from start-to-finish in one year. For trails, that's pretty amazing. You can even take your dogs to nearby Pawadise Park - Grant County's first dog park. Whenever I'm wheeling in this part of the state, I make it a point to add the Sweetser Switch Trail to my route because it makes for a few miles of beautiful wheeling and practically guarantees I'll run into some friendly people along the way. I give it a wholehearted thumbs up.

So the northeast corner of Sycamore and Union was fixed up to create a people place where visitors could sit and relax in a pleasant environment, right in the heart of downtown. The gazebo has numerous chairs and is surrounded by landscaped walkways. There is a large bell on the north side of the park and to the west is a large mural. Across the street is the entrance to City Hall which has a fountain and art sculpture. All in all, the park fits in well with the surrounding area which is filled with great architectural details, public art, and a bit of history. Review #2339
