My review is an ode to my first family doctor, Dr Ivan G. C. Mark. His daughter, Dr Pamela Mark,…read morefollowed in his footsteps and they practised together for many years. I had Dr Pamela a few times when Dr Ivan wasn't available. She was competent, but she didn't have the same bedside manner as her father. Dr Ivan was my mom's family doctor when she immigrated to Toronto. He delivered me at Toronto East General (now Michael Garron) Hospital. I was fortunate to have him as my family doctor until I left Toronto and moved out west to Winnipeg. He always had a calm disposition and was a gentle soul. I stumbled upon this Facebook post by Fred Lee, which was fascinating and insightful about Dr Ivan: I was wondering if there are any plaques honouring Dr. Ivan Mark? Dr Mark I believe was the first ever Chinese Canadian admitted to a Canadian medical (U of T). His brother Fred was the 2nd one. When Dr Mark first qualified he started his family practice in Scarborough because his Chinese language skills he felt wasn't good enough to be practicing in Chinatown. He became our family doctor when we moved to Toronto in 1966. By then Dr Mark's Cantonese had improved to the point he felt comfortable taking on Chinese patients. I remember him telling me his new Chinese patients complaining about all the white people in his waiting room. In the mid 60s about 80% of his patients were not Chinese. Another memory was I went to a stag in my freshman year and after winning the first draw prize.....went to see Dr Mark next day. He gave me a shot of penicillin and a lecture. Dr Mark has delivered over 2000 babies. He stopped delivering babies after on his way to deliver a baby his car hit black ice and he did a 720 degrees spin luckily without any collision but his nerves were shot. His daughter Pamela became my doctor after Dr Mark passed on literally on the job. His wife and occasional receptionist was wondering why he was taking so long to call for his next patient. They looked in on him and he was unconscious. Pamela was there too and they revived him long enough for the family to say goodbye. I remember his wife, Barbara. She had an equally calm demeanor, which was much needed as a receptionist in a busy waiting room. It was indeed a family affair at a family clinic. Dr Ivan was a humble man. I miss him. I can still hear his voice during the various appointments that I had with him. These days, Dr Pamela works at Michael Garron Hospital. I did not see her name on the board when I passed by the clinic on the northwest corner of Danforth Avenue and Dawes Road. (255)
