Basically this is one of the most ignored parks in the BREC system. There have been no park upgrades in years despite the fact that park utilization has increased 10-fold. That being said, it's a wonderful multicultural experience given the demographics of the area. BREC needs to pay more attention to this place and perhaps fence off an area for dogs as the nearest dog park is 5 miles or more away depending on where you live. There's a large open space for playing fetch, but people who let their dog's off leash risk a fine. Also, even without a bark park, there is no provision for bags to pick up dog poop when you walk your dog on leash so bring your own doggie bags. Wonderful place, too bad BREC is so busy concentrating on water parks and parks in the South East part of the Parish. A full size basketball court and more equipment for children would also be nice.

Public tennis facility in the mid-city area which offers 11 courts and a hitting wall and also 2…read moreindoor courts. This facility is operated by BREC. Independence park is located where the old airport was located and the indoor courts were constructed in the hangar area and as such there is a low ceiling for those who like to lib the ball. The indoor tennis courts were recently redone and as such are in the best shape it's ever been. The outdoor courts are lined up two within a fence with one set of 3. Each of the tennis courts have benches for the players. There is no water. Also, for the spectator, there are benches near each court which makes it pleasant and somewhat easy to view. In addition to the tennis courts, in this area are meeting rooms which the public may use.

Whew! I'm on a tear! 2nd tennis facility reviews today. Independence Park Tennis Center isn't…read morenearly as nice as Forest Park, but it is MUCH closer to my house. The courts were resurfaced, I guess, mid-last year. While a vast improvement from their previous state, the base of the courts is still in pretty lousy shape. There are quite a few spots where there are cracks or divots that could easily change the trajectory of the ball...unless it's me hitting it, which would result in the ball burying itself in the ground until friction of the surrounding pavement and consequential hole gravel eventually bring the ball to a stop somewhere near the earth's core. (um, that was a joke, I'm really a humble guy...I mean, some of my best friends are me) There are a lot of courts and they have a croquet field and shuffleboard, but the court conditions are really not perfect. One set of courts seems to be on a slope, so you're either serving uphill or downhill. Barely noticeable...but noticeable. It's close to my house, so I'll keep coming.

This public BREC park is nestled inside a quiet neighborhood, but it's easy to get to by car (or…read morefoot if you happen to live in River Bend). It's a peaceful place with lots of trees and open spaces. There's a tennis court, covered picnic table area, water fountain, benches, two sandy playgrounds, and a walking loop. No restrooms. Recently they built a nice scenic pathway that takes you through the trees to Farr Park, and from there it's a straight shot to the levee- another nice walk and good place to see the sunset. Whether you are looking for a fishing pond, a rock climbing wall or a kids summer camp, you've come to the right place. BREC operates so much of what goes on in Baton Rouge's parks and recreation programs. I have had the chance to enjoy many of them. Just down the street from where I live, there is a really cool skate park, where one could do some pretty gnarly tricks using a skateboard + there is a rock wall for climbing enthusiasts and so much more. If you are looking for recreational activities like tennis or golf, you'll find it within BREC, too. During the summertime, my daughter enjoys some of the camps they offer for the young ones. Again, there are so many, but from the ones she has done, she did enjoy history camp (at Magnolia Mound) and swamp camp (at The Bluebonnet Swamp). So, whatever it is that you may enjoy and fancy, go check out all that BREC has to offer in your neighborhood.
