However, the inside doesn't quite match my first impression. The place was practically empty when we went for dinner. One waitress--granted that she was nice, neither she nor the food was not fast. It seemed like there were 15 minutes among getting menus, ordering, getting the food (soup and then entree) and paying, and it felt drawn out sitting in a brightly lit but practically empty place. Perhaps the restaurant would be more pleasant to stay if there were more people (it was the holiday season, so perhaps we went at the unfavorable time). Food was so-so. A good selection of various food, so there were lots to choose from (and they are English friendly with their menu). I started with the potato and mushroom soup, which was great (especially for the cold weather). Then I got the basil risotto with mushroom and fried rocket, and that was way way way tooooo greasy! It was hard to eat one bite without feeling greasy all over my mouth. Flavors were there, but it was doused in oil--not good. Meh.

First we had a Bombay Crushed which tasted flat and bitter -- probably Gordon's instead of Bombay Sapphire and flat sparkling water. I then tried a different drink, some fruity cocktail with a funny name, which was also quite bad. But the service was nice and the prices, as mentioned, were quite reasonable. So I wouldn't go out of my way to go here, and if I did, I'd be drinking the beer... but it's not a bad place.

The place was really busy on a Sunday night at 10 pm. Service was a bit slow with the workers struggling to keep up. Overall, an interesting and fun place; don't expect gourmet but fine for pizza and Margheritas.

Uzun Tasfirini is acclaimed as one of the best spots in the "Little Istanbul" neighborhood, specializing in pides. Pides (pronounced "pea-days") are the Turkish equivalent to pizza. This snack food is a large flatbread topped with ground lamb, tomatoes, and spices, which bakes in a wood-fired oven for less than 10 minutes. It is then cut into squares and served with peppers, parsley, and lemons. You assemble the peppers and parsley yourself, squeezing lemon over your pide before you fold it up and indulge in this pizza treat. It's a simple, delicious dish that you can't miss out on if you're in Mannheim or are feeling homesick for a slice of pizza.
