He was masked and there was a good safe protocol in place and chickens free range everywhere:) they accept checks and cash, but you need exact change unless you are going to go back another time and use up your credit. I was able to pick up the next afternoon. What was really mind blowing though were the beautiful beet greens! The location was easy to find and even better than described, and the accommodations were clean, modern & updated, and well appointed. The views were stunning from our relaxing porch and upper balcony, the neighbors were friendly and welcoming, and "town" was just close enough to be very convenient. Some of the people in our group ventured out to other WBF locations like the cafe and The Public House, and had nothing but glowing reviews for those experiences as well. We were visiting from the Midwest and admittedly don't recall many details from history class, so we literally thought it was a historical site that had been turned into a bar and wondered if the staff would be dressed up as war re-enactors! It is not that at all and it turned out to be a highlight of our stay in Maine. The guide we had is a history teacher and she knew a lot about a lot-the actual events but also the real humans involved and their families. She knew all about how households of the time were run, typical family routines and roles, how foods were prepared, household tools and textiles, attitudes and social expectations, superstitions and legends. She inspired all three of us (two adults and a teenager) to learn more about Machias and the Revolutionary War in general. This museum makes it so much easier to connect to the real people who lived through and made this history. It is unlike any other historical tour I've been on. I would have stayed longer if I could have. There is something for everyone here, it's not just about the war and shots fired. You go room by room and spend a good 20-30 minutes or longer in each room depending on how many questions you ask about the items in that room. It is a very detailed and data intensive tour, so don't go if you're hungover, hungry or not in the mood to absorb, observe and be immersed. If you are a naval history buff or a Revolutionary War buff, call them and schedule a visit to see if you can help them identify some of the pieces they've received over the years from folks who maybe didn't know what they were donating. I don't recommend this for young kids or people who aren't comfortable in small spaces. The museum is a boarding house/tavern and has been kept pristine in its original 1770s state, so think very small rooms, low ceilings. The tour groups are kept small so there is enough room as you walk through. Call ahead to schedule and make sure there is a guide available on the day you want to go. I was so impressed with the passion and dedication behind this tour. We were there two weeks ago and are still talking about it and looking up books at the library.

A small container of herbed chèvre was crazy expensive but very creamy and tasty. They sell all sorts of cow and goat dairy including unhomogenized milk. Their website identifies the local markets they supply as well as their market with the original 9th generation Tide Mill farm.
