Considering…read morethat this is an NHS Hospital, that's even more impressive (not that it's good, but that it has a good reputation). From the outside this hospital has a whole lot of charm. It's one long and tall brick building that seems to levitate on the top of a hill overlooking Penarth. Lots of gardens and space and flower beds add to the atmosphere of an old fashioned place. It's respectable in its traditional nature. And, now wait for it, because this is kind of cool, they have the world's first ever high definition MRI. Whoohoo!

The building itself is old Victorian brick, much smaller and better laid out than the sprawling Heath Hospital. The vibe here is also much more chilled, less traffic, less urgency. I visited the midwife led unit as part of the antenatal class in order to weigh up my options. The unit is like a four start hotel - spacious rooms, double beds with duvets, birthing accessories and birthing pools. This is the place I wanted to give birth. Unfortunately with an old pelvic injury I was advised to go to the Heath hospital where they had surgeons on hand. If there were complications I would have had to wait for an ambulance like everyone else. If you drive here by car no need for coins, rather fantastically, unlike most other hospitals parking is free.

Had great service. My husband was also under RDE and trusted them and said he was impressed. He was waiting for a angiogram. But It turned out he needed a quadruple bypass and soon. They kept writing to us and asking us shall we take you off the list it's only for a stent at the worst and it's not really necessary. Luckily we stuck it out and said no we want the angiogram and stent if needed as my mother in law died of heart problems. After RDE realising it was much more serious after doing the angiogram, they referred us to Plymouth and who were amazing and said my husbands treatment was not acceptable, he could have died while waiting and was waiting 102 weeks for an angiogram Plymouth had him in within three weeks and at the stage of his bypass they were still waiting for paperwork and health history from RDE so we told them everything they needed to know and they had no idea my mother in law had died from heart problems and heart problems are in the family. The RDE hadn't told them. This is totally unacceptable, they are playing with peoples lives. Even after complaining we haven't heard anything from them whatsoever.

Car parks bit pricey, need to take plenty of change with you if you want to park on site. Operates a park and ride service (current cost about £1) with buses running every 12 minutes or so from a secure car park, from 7am to about 9.45pm Monday - Friday. Covers all medical areas (except for Psychological) Very good website with information on all wards. Gives information for patients going into the Hospital. Gives recruitment information including listing all available vacancies. Gives information on contact details. Smoke free site - no smoking permitted anywhere including the car park and grounds.

20/11/10. At the beginning of this year, my 19 year son was took into hospital with severe pain in…read morehis abdomen and back. He was admitted by A&E. During the time, in hospital, he had tests and was diagnosed with Chronic Pancreatitis. After 4-5 days I was advised to take my son home, as a sickness bug was sweeping through the hospital, which I did. 2 week later he was admitted again 1 day later, sent home, 1 wk later admitted again 3 days later sent home, he was admitted a few times after that and the same sent home with medication that had no effect on him to stop the problem. In June, not only was he still suffering with his abdomen & back pain, he started with bladder problems, not being able to pass water and anything that entered his stomach made him vomit he also had problems going to the toilet the other end too. Every day when he was in hospital, I travelled 35 miles to visit my son to watch bad attitude, irritable, disrespectful nurses who have no sympathy or empathy for their patients. On one occasion my son needed to be cathertised, as he had not passed water for the most part of the day, and was in considerable amount of pain. I approached a nurse and very sharpley said, 'I'll be there in a minute'. 20 min later I approached her again, she sighed and had an expression on her face as if to say....Oh ok then I'll do it.....My temper was reaching to a level where I new I had to go outside and calm down. My son was discharged 2 days later, with a bladder that would not empty fully, with a view for an outpatients appointment in 3 MONTHS time. Since then he has had to have a catheter placed on average every 2 weeks and it removed 1wk to 10 days later. We are at a stage now where he cannot swallow solid food and is having to live on water consistency complan and slimfast untill he can have further test in Dec. (another 2 week) On top of that, after we visited another consultant about an injury which happened in 2007, the staff nurse came swifting over to my son and I, going on about how pancreatitis calms down after a couple of weeks she said refux is nothing. I was so upset, I felt like hitting her. I thought who the hell is she, a bossy know all that knows nothing. How callous minded, and interfering with a face like cold stone. Well Barnstaple Hospital, I have only written briefly of what my son has been through for the past year, as I would be here all night filling this little box about my son versus Barnstaple Hospital.... by the way to all the medical staff, he is still suffering as he has done for nearly a year now, and nothing has been done. You ought to be ashamed with yourselves. Any mother would know how it feels to see their child suffer, who can you turn to? what can you do?. I must also say that a Doctor named Katy, is excluded from all above as she was everything a patient would want to see in a doctor, caring natured person, unfortunately, my son had to be transferred to another doctor.

And, I don't know whether it is because of the bad press the NHS has received over the years relating to impersonal service, neglect of patients, mal-practise, dare I go on, but every experience I have been part of during the course of an appointment, has been a more than favourable one. Doctors, well, they are always rushed for time, so you forgive their sometimes curt ways, but the staff from nurses to reception are all incredibly polite, warm, kind and helpful. It is like they all have taken a Florence Nightingale pill. I'm into 'personality' in a big way, because I think it is lacking in today's harassed society, but it means everything and is a wonderful placebo. The negative aspects to my time at the Cardiff hospital, and I think being on hospital grounds, there should be a bit of responsibility taken. Is the WHSmiths store. Every time I go in to purchase a paper, the programmed workers behind the counter refer to the WHS sales items that are blatantly stacked on the counter, so much so, that you hardly have room to place your purchases - These sales items, are always sugar coated treats. But, your intelligence and your senses are insulted completely by 'the hussle' to sell these sugar items, chocolate bars, candies and this is all happening in a hospital. I have pointed this irony out to the sales staff, but it has fallen on deaf and stubborn ears every time and I am brushed aside as if I have not even spoken. With diabetes and obesity running at an all time high, the pushing of such items - ESPECIALLY ON HOSPITAL TERRAIN - is not only an insult but terribly insensitive. I guess if they could get away with shoving cigarettes under your nose, they would do that too without another thought to their surroundings.

Due to its emphasis upon education, the hospital is full with students in every area, from nursing to radiotherapy. But this does not mean that the standard in lacking, instead it means that there is an air of learning and team playing that might not be as evident elsewhere. This hospital has a reputation for being understaffed, and this is probably true, as it is of most NHS hospitals these days. However, all my experiences have led me to believe that the staff really try as hard as they can, and I want to commend them for that. A little way to go, but nearly awesome.

Time spent in Hospital. From Friday 12/09/2025…read more TO 25/09/2025? XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX On Friday 12/09/2025 I became ill with high temperatures, nauseous, confusion, fatigue, very pale, dizziness I had to lie down. Firstly I phone my Doctor's surgery but I had to give my phone to my partner because I was deteriorating. My partner was told to phone a ambulance, which she did. The last thing I vaguely remembered I was on a bed ,the nurses & Doctor's were asking me questions. I couldn't answer because at the time I never knew where I was, what year was it and didn't even know who I was. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Through out this entire time of my complete confusion I sensed & felt my partner's presences with me. My partner is truly amazing beautiful wonderful person. Thanks for her love, understanding, patience and the support she had shown me. XXXXXXXXXXXXXX X The first thing I remembered was becoming aware of it was 04:30 am .I was in Southmead hospital gate 28b bed 36. but remembering what the date & year was it didn't came back to me straight away but it did later during that day of 13/09/2025 Saturday. I was informed that I had another severe skin infection. There was large red patches travelling up my legs. I also discovered every time I moved my both hips and my lower back was severely painful. Over the week that commenced. nights & days. I received x-ray scans. I tried on two separate days to have MRA scans but each on the two days I couldn't stand it any longer than ten minutes because laying flat was extremely painful. The doctors decided for me to have an CT scan with sedation before the CT scan, which worked out better for me. It was still extremely painful in my hips and my lower back but this scan was very much shorter. I was treated with a seven day course of very strong antibiotics. Throughout the Nights and the days XXXXXXXXXXXXXX The entire workforce of Southmead Hospital works towards one goal. That goal is to treat the health conditions that can be treated and completely heal other health conditions. The health conditions that can't be healed they make the other patients comfortable as best as they can. The staff of South mead hospital that work on Gate 28b bed 36 looked after me thoroughly. XXXXXXXXXXXXXX X There is a a group of people whom are dedicated to their profession, which is called the N.H.S. From all walks of life and from different countries they came to this country and started working for the N.H.S. to make our lives healthier and happier when we are unwell. Tests results going missing or NOT looked at at all when you ring up as NO ONE has contacted you when you were told they would and within a certain time you ring up they have no idea what your talking about, don't know what results you are meaning and tell you "sorry I think your mistaken" BUT then find what you are talking about and then feed you full of absolute nonsense instead of admitting that AGAIN they messed up BIG time and a doctor or consultant hasn't even bothered to open it and look at it even though it's been weeks since you had it done and even though you have been ringing up every other day leaving message after message! Receptionist NOT getting back to you when told MANY times they will you leave so many messages that you would think they would be sick of hearing you but nope still don't ring back. Sat in the waiting room for hours and then watch the person you are meant to be seen by walk out to find out they FORGOT you were sitting there and actually went home!!! No apology just a "we will make a note to the consultant and hopefully they will contact you" but they DON'T! This hospital is DANGEROUS!!! This hospital has neglected my husband for years (and yes we have tried moving care) they have lost his notes, his test results, forgot about him, didn't send out the much NEEDED appointments, no one bothering to look at his test results or scan results, sent him home when they shouldn't have so his landed up in a&e MANY times, using medical equipment but SHOULDN'T have so have left him PERMANENTLY damaged, left him bleeding out, surgeons DELIBERATELY ignore calls from nurses even though it's an emergency! given wrong medication, almost taken down for a operation that wasn't for him was for another patient and NO I am not joking! operated on him and caused so much life limiting damage to places they should NOT have been near! Had a surgeon operate on people when he SHOULDN'T have been and he has ruined people's lives! And YES we have made so many complaints it's RIDICULOUS The list of things wrong with this hospital is LONG but don't have the space to write it all trust me STAY AWAY!!!The hospital is a total disgrace
