Saw a beautiful wood sculpture in the window, and the owner stayed late to allow us to buy it as we were leaving early the next day.

Welty's has an amazing inventory and some of the most helpful sales people on the planet. If downsizing makes good business sense, a new, smaller location may be good. Less inventory would take away some of the fun of shopping there but could be reasonable. hHopefully they have not gone completely out of business. Started in 1889......too long a legacy to just end.....please resurface somewhere .....even if Online, for those of us who love you!! read more

Nice gentleman at counter welcomed us. An overpriced store, should be in Jackson Hole, western clothing, pottery and miscellaneous goods. No Photos allowed in store, posted sign on door. If you are in town and need ANYTHING, you MUST walk into Welty's and take a long, good gander around inside an early 1900s general store, which is somehow still in business in Dubois, WY. And once you walk into Welty's, you'll discover you've entered a time machine. Butch Cassidy was a regular customer here - so says the sign on the store's only operable entrance. When you first walk through the door, everything of the in front of you and to the left side of the building is roped off and inaccessible for purchasing. Don't know why, exactly. It looks fully stocked over in this section with paint and various hardware still on the shelves, but there's a coat of dust over it all. This section has obviously been roped off for years. Not sure why, exactly. I never got a strait answer when I asked why, either. I suspect it's because Welty lost some bet he made years ago with the awful and infamous (but local!) True Value Napa store owners which forced him to close off his entire hardware department. Not sure, and doesn't matter, anyway. In fact, it sort of adds to the charm of the place, and besides, there's plenty of things to see and and buy once you walk around to the right. Let me warn you members of PETA and animal-rights activist. This is not your store. There are heads on the walls. All sorts of heads, all over the walls. More heads than even in many museums I've visited. There's even a head of a seal. The owner told me it had been clubbed. That's right - look for the mounted seal head amongst the herd of heads. The only head you won't find is a human head, but I probably just didn't spot it. I needed a comfortable pillow. I would be camping for a couple of weeks outside of Dubois to help run a week-long Boy Scout adventure for my troop at the Whiskey Mountain Conservation Camp. I had spent one night on a lame pillow, and this is obviously the only place in town that I have a chance at finding a decent bed pillow in (other than a motel, but then I'd have to steal it, which is against Boy Scout rules and such). Amazingly, the owner of Welty's ultimately produced such a pillow for a very reasonable price, and when I say reasonable, I'm talking a price that rivals what you'd pay for a Wal-Mart pillow. But was this pillow made in China? Hell NO! Ain't a damn thing sold made anywhere other than in the good old USA in this place! Also, it was the one and only bed pillow in the entire store, and when I asked for it, no one knew where it was, exactly. But they knew it was somewhere. And though it took approximately half an hour to locate said pillow, there it was, and it was perfect. If it would have taken half a day in there to find it, it would have been my pleasure. Why? Because you can't buy or see this sort of thing anywhere else on the planet. It doesn't exist anywhere else because Welty's isn't a show; it's a REAL PLACE with only one location. An authentic old-school general store still open for business well into the 2000s. There's no experience like wandering around in this establishment, browsing goods that make you wonder, 'Who still buys these things?!' while chatting with the owner and employees as they scratch their heads, trying to remember where they last saw that new bed pillow. A variety of interesting and unique antiques. However, the woman working there made my mother and I feel uncomfortable. She followed a few feet behind us the entire time as if we were going to steal something. And the signs on everything that said "DO NOT TOUCH" and "IF YOU TOUCH IT AND BREAK IT IT'S ALL YOURS" were a bit much and unwelcoming. Only stayed ten minutes because the signs and the employee made us feel so uncomfortable. Just a tip from someone who worked retail for years, don't make customers feel un-welcomed and maybe they'll stay and purchase. read more

Whoa. This is as if you stepped into another era, the era of trappers, cowboys, and homesteaders. Outside of food this place has it all- fishing, hunting, clothing, homewares, just about everything you'd need. The owner is extremely nice and helpful, my wife and I were visiting friends in Dubois and we needed a gift. She has beautiful ceramics and glassware and we found exactly what we needed. Not only that, but the owner called a local florist and arranged for us to visit her to buy flowers for our vase. There is a ton of really cool special stuff in here, it's almost like a sort of time capsule. It's even a national historic landmark site. Welty's General Store is a historical landmark. It has probably been in Dubois for a 100 years. Whether you are traveling through, snowmobiling, hunting, fishing or just in need of clothing or hardware, this is the one stop to shop. I purchased a spinning rod and reel here, and think I got a fair price, not one jacked up because of the location and the urgency of my need. Sometimes Welty's may be closed since it seems to be a family-run business, but if it is open, take a look. They have a variety of goods you would not expect in such a small town. read more

I have stayed in Dubois at least 25 times over the past 30 years. I have been there for packhorse trips, fishing and snowmobiling. In all the times I have been there Welty's has only been open only once. It was truly an experience. It is like a time capsule, The prices seemed fair and the range of goods was astounding. I just wish they could find a way to be open more often. read more
