Great selection but mostly name brand products like The North Face, Osprey, etc. I was disappointed not to see more local products for hats and tee shirts. Nevertheless we scored a great deal on merino wool socks: 50 percent off. They have a clearance/ second hand section upstairs for the bargain hunters. Large selection for both men and women. I've tried to support this business for years instead of going to Billings, but unfortunately the quality just hasn't been there. From gear falling apart quickly, to uncomfortable boot fittings, to ski tunes that didn't perform well on the mountain, my experiences have been disappointing. Gear up! Sunlight Sport's the spot for sporty stuff! This place is pretty great- they have a great selection of camping equipment that'll definitely get you through Yellowstone, or any other camping situation. Don't have a camper/trailer? These guys will rent you one! They've got a cool, modern trailer that has all the latest tech that'll get you to the top of the Tetons grandly. Their expertise is impressive. They sell maps to help you get around, and the staff is ready to answer questions about any of the merch. They've got a hiking shoe selection that's hard to beat, and lots of the coolest latest gadgets that'll help you get over the river and through the woods. There's a second story to this place, I don't think there's an elevator available. One of my favorite things about this store are the displays- in the window and on the sales floor, they have little camping scenes set up, where they're highlighting their gear or clothing. Loved the staff and the really high quality merchandise. They had a good variety and depth of inventory that was nicely displayed. Best part is that the staff knew their stuff. They didn't make up any answers when I asked about things. I wasn't really looking for anything but I did end up buying some small things - accessories to outdoor clothing. My friends and I stopped into Sunlight Sports on the way to Yellowstone. We generally just checked out the gear and one of my friends bought hiking boots. The staff was very friendly and knowledgable about their items. The items they carry are high quality and have a correspondingly high price tag. This is definitely the place to stop for last minute items if you are running short on something before you go into Yellowstone or the Grand Tetons. read more

Had a friend visiting from California. He wanted a shopping day, so off to Cody we went. Since he was looking for athletic apparel, we started here & he was like a kid in a candy store. LOL... He found 2 totally unique workout tees. They were like nothing thing he could find in Calif. His words, not mine. Then we (he) spent even more time looking for a cap that matched the teal Tee, as well as a pair of running shoes. I didn't think he would EVER find a pair of shoes that suited him, when the owner brought over a pair of blue (think "Elvis & Blue Suede Shoes") ones. He tried them on (think Cinderella's glass slipper), walked around in them & TADA he was finally ready to check out. The owner was friendly, kept up a flowing conversation, without being in the way, and was very knowledgeable. I found out they carry shoes for wierd feet (mine). My husband and I had a week free in August, and after much vacillation (Mexico? Florida? Maine?) we (I) decided to go to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. Ok, great, decision made, destination chosen! Wait ... hotel rooms cost $300/night? SAY. WHAT. All righty, how about this here "car camping" that I have heard people speak of. No, husband, I do not want to use your 10-year-old tent. If I'm gonna go car camping, I want some small luxuries, including not hauling gear from the San Francisco Bay Area to Wyoming. Enter Google and "rent camping equipment" = Sunlight Sports. I placed an initial order, doubling up on tents because I had no idea what I was doing, and eventually had helpful conversations with the rental folks who (1) educated me (2) soothed me (3) freebied me with sleeping bag liners. I didn't know what that was, but I appreciated it. We flew into Cody on a Saturday morning, got our rental car, and made our way to Sunlight Sports without GPS. It turned out to be not that hard when there is effectively one main road in town, and the store is on that main road. I had rented 1 tent, 2 sleeping bags + 2 pads; we ended up buying (not renting) a stove, since my husband wanted to reuse it. (He thinks we are going car camping again. So cute. I kid; we had a really great time! But, after 6 days straight, I'm not jonesing to go again any time soon.) I forget the name of the woman who helped us, but she was nice and patient and helped demo the tent set-up in the store, which was great. She also recommended those instant "meal in a bag, just add hot water" from Backpackers Pantry, but some were $6.50 and some were over $15, which caught us by surprise. Our "TeaHouse" tent performed well overall ... well ... except for the last night, when it rained, and water leaked through one zipper, on to the floor, and part of my sleeping bag. That wasn't cool. We hoped that Sunlight would give us some kind of discount when we informed them, but although the guy made sympathetic noises, no dice. They were friendly and competent otherwise, and I also really appreciated that they give 1-day leeway on either side of your rental period, allowing for a pick-up and drop-off cushion. I had started my reservation from Sunday but intended to pick up equipment on Saturday, and they were totally cool with that, which was a lifesaver. Check this before you rent, however. Overall- renting good quality gear from friendly and knowledgeable people made our YELL/GRTE trip immeasurably better. My husband was nervous- he saw I was both optimistic and naive about car camping- but we had a great experience overall, and in no small part that was thanks to Sunlight Sports. My partner and I stopped in here on our way to Yellowstone (from NYC via car) to pick up some well-needed hiking and camping supplies. We had been jonesing for an REI but all there was along the way were WalMarts and their horrible stock of Coleman "camping" supplies. The employees at Sunlight were very helpful and made sure to get me the map I needed as well as making suggestions on other items we needed. Upgrading from my leaky Camelbak reservoir to my Osprey reservoir was one of the best choices I've made. I only wished they had a camping pillow for under $40. LOL But if you need some good hiking gear on your way to Yellowstone, come here and avoid the Coleman nightmare that is WalMart. I hope to one day revisit everyone at Sunlight Sports and regale them with our outdoor adventures! read more

We stopped at Sunlight Sports in a big bind on our way into Yellowstone for a 5 day backpacking trip. We had prepped all of our camping gear in Boulder CO and packed the car for the drive. It wasn't until we were well past Thermopolis that we realized that we had left all of our carefully planned backpacking food for five days behind in the kitchen cabinet! One of our party has a special diet so we couldn't just pick up anything at the grocery store. We called ahead to Sunlight Sports and the staff member there was incredibly helpful. He scanned the shelves and set aside a number of food and snack items that he thought could fit our needs. When we arrived he went through everything with us and made recommendations. Not only did he help with the food but he pointed out some of his favorite hikes in the park and demonstrated the correct way to use bear spray.
