Distant ocean bay with receding water line is not a high quality view and is barely visible from inadequate smaller side apartment windows. Carpet dirty and fringed with wear. Institutional setting with large hospital-looking building(s) on-site near residential apartments. Parking not convenient or close, vehicles parked in line in open-air group carport at distance from front door of residence. read more

What a beautiful community! I went today to pick up a former coworker who now lives there and go to lunch in PB. We decided to stay on property and enjoy lunch in their dining room. What a gorgeous place to retire in! My friend's apartment is really stunning - very modern, spacious, and with high ceilings and a patio. The landscaping is beautiful; people can easily walk to the dining room or to one of the many activities they have; and if you become less mobile, they have golf carts that will pick you up. The also send meals to people's apartments if they are unable to walk. The chaplain was super cool; they have lectures and film screenings; and the food was pretty decent! The patio was lovely, and inside lots of people were dining with friends. They have a daily special and then a regular menu. We got the soup of the day first (potato leek) which was yummy, and then I had a decent mushroom swiss omelette. They didn't have Dijon mustard, but servers were very nice, and they unfold your napkins like you're in fine dining. My friend also loves the dog park, and the beautiful old trees on the property, and the views of the ocean and PB are stunning. And we saw friends of his along the way too, and he told me about some of the other very accomplished and interesting residents. Looks like a great place to retire if you can afford it! (though it is way up on a hill, so if you're driving yourself, be prepared for the way up to be winding). read more

Wesley Palms is a six-star assisted living facility on the hills above Pacific Beach. Our family of four visited a few times in looking for a place for my husband and me. We are in our early 90s. We had checked out five other senior communities in the San Diego area. Wesley Palms was the best. It has beautiful grounds and views of Mission Bay and the Pacific Ocean. On every visit members of the staff--including marketing director Cara, driver Greg, nurse Jacqueline, care service manager Lupe, and the head chef--greeted us with smiles and a desire to fulfill our wishes. We had two delicious meals in the light-filled dining room. What kept us from signing up was its location away from a metro bus line. We don't drive and although the Palms has frequent outings around town, my husband craves the freedom and confidence of walking out the door and being near familiar commercial activities. When I told one daughter that the decision had to be unanimous between my husband and me on such an important move, tears came to her eyes. I believe she felt this was the best time and place for her mom and dad. When I told Cara at Wesley Palms of our decision, she kindly said the doors would remain open. I moved into Wesley Palms two years ago. Suddenly, I had lost my husband and I was leaving behind a life of 50 happy years. I started looking for a new home. I knew this enormous life change would not be easy. I wanted an open feeling, a view, a safe environment, caring people, and wonderful new friends. Was I asking for too much? No! I found everything I wanted and needed here at Wesley Palms. You pay rent month to month. No one has taken a large amount of my money to "hold". I have found the staff to be very caring. I have had no concerns that haven't been lovingly solved. I walk among beautiful trees, small animals, and many flowers. And you find all of this on 35 acres! I have felt very confident that no staff have been positive, and personally I feel so much better about returning to teaching at the end of August, seeing first hand that the safety protocols at the Palms are working. I have been here 5 years and live in a patio home that overlooks the city. Great view. But the thing I speak of most is the employees. They are well trained, friendly, helpful and feel like family. My children are happy I'm here and have told others that their father is well taken care and has many friendly neighbors. You can be as active as you want going to plays, concerts, shopping, etc. or just take in retirement. Because of the pride we all feel in this place , volunteering is easy to do. Do not let the outside exterior fool you. There is a lot of things wrong in this community. I am not sure why most of the employees seems to have an unpleasant attitude. One that did stood out was the shockingly mean, un compassionate, rude nurse specifically lady nurse named Deshaun. You cannot ask a simple question without them saying "that is not my job" in addition to talking down on people that are below her job level. The nurse at the wellness center has absolutely no patience or respect for others. If she treats other employees like this, I'm scared to see how she treats patients and people in her community, especially when family or others aren't around. What a horrifying, eye-opening experience. Please do better in hiring friendly, compassionate, RESPECTFUL people especially the ones responsible for providing care. read more

My wife and I are residents of Wesley Palms in Pacific Beach, CA. We are very comfortable here in our "patio home". The food is quite good most of the time. We can usually find one or more dishes at each meal that we enjoy. We often take advantage of meals brought to our home. The central dining facilities are well appointed and well-served. There are more than enough activities: something for everyone. Wesley Palms is constantly adding events and things to do. There are plenty of volunteer opportunities but no pressure to volunteer. The 33 acre campus is well-landscaped and pleasant to walk around. I am a bird watcher and find many species here. The staff is well-trained and helpful. read more

I want to name one person in particular who has been exceptional during the COVID pandemic: Zach Vandergrift. He has helped out my father and other residents with many issues related to isolation including iPad set up and training and many other support issues. A genuinely good guy with a heart of gold who sincerely cares about people, seniors and the WP residents. Why only three stars? Since the pandemic, the activities, food and services have been greatly reduced. Of course, this is to be expected. But the food has been cold and lacking in options. We put in special requests for my father for each meal and they have never been offered (I have been on the phone with him when the food delivery arrived). The activities are totally uncreative and alternative services are non existent. Sure, to be expected during these exceptional times... FRONT PORCH offered to defer the regular annual rent increase to address the virus and the slow down in services. Nice start BUT they are charging the SAME AMOUNT but offering LESS. The math just isn't fair. They are making money on the pandemic. There should be a DISCOUNT for every single one of the residents since they are receiving LESS; their operating costs are significantly less and this should scale down to the residents. Plain and simple and fair. read more

If active, there are on site activities, San Diego shows or local entertainment in our hall. Security is excellent and all employees are friendly and helpful. They care. Sean Heuer provided expertise for my parents every step of the way in their moving process. This was a big deal, after living in one house for 38 years, and Sean's guidance was invaluable. He's extremely kind and understanding, and always answered every question for us. He made sure to go the extra mile for them, responding to every single ask, even if he already had been asked the same question multiple times. They just moved in yesterday. The facility is beautiful. The staff is very friendly. Do NOT apply here if your family has mental health issues. After taking our money, scheduling a move in, and buying furniture my father was denied because "we aren't equipped to deal with mental health issues." For the record, he has depression. My frustration is the stringing along. Now we have 2 days to find another facility for a loved one. We hid nothing during the application process. Very misleading. read more

Fabulous facility!!! Mom and I were in search of a place for Dad, and felt like we'd hit the lottery when we arrived at Wesley Palms. What an amazing set-up they offer to their memory care residents. We worked with Sean Heuer to get all of our i's dotted and our t's crossed, and he couldn't have been more helpful, professional, courteous and thoughtful. Looks great . Food is not much. If your family member needs extra care, it's up to you to pay for it. If a resident is in a medical crisis, they are told to call 911. I am a neighbor to Wesley Palms, and am also a grandson of a resident of Wesley Palms. My grandma and I are close, always have been, and I encouraged my parents and aunts and uncles to consider Wesley Palms so she be close to me, my wife and my two kids, two of her 12 great-grandkids. My grandma, 92, moved in to Wesley Palms during COVID, during a hard time for everyone. I am leading in with this as it has not been the proximity which has been a joy to me and to her (visiting made harder due to COVID and now Delta--understandably!), but first it has been the community and the staff. The positive experience, incredibly positive, started minute one, introduction one, to Sean Heuer, in Sales and Marketing. I want to quote that or something as Sean did so much more than 'sales and marketing', Sean was our families liaison and guide in to this new chapter for my grandma and our family. He took calls or called back right away, answered all emails promptly, sure, he is in sales, though 92% of his effort was spent in guiding our family, walking through timing, services, units, floors, the grounds, and overall experience. Looking back, at the process (which changed with time and in what room my grandma landed), at the decision making, at the movers and the move in; at the acclimation process and the welcoming of my grandma, we are all, beginning with my grandma, but all seven of her kids are in alignment that this is the place for their mother, for my grandma. There you go I guess. I love my grandma dearly, my daughter is even named after her, and knowing that she is and will be living among her peers, and with a staff that, top-to-bottom, seem to be genuine and genuinely care, and on a property that is truly irreplaceable in San Diego, I don't know how I could be more content with our family's collective decision making process here, and in my grandma's current set of circumstances... It is hard to give Sean all the credit for alone being able to make seven aunts and uncles of mine all in unanimous agreement of the same, as such, and while he was the tip of our Wesley Palms iceberg (bad analogy, sorry), I will say that the entire staff deserves a whole lot of incredible credit--thank you Wesley Palms! read more

During my stay at Wesley Palms, I was favorably impressed by how well the community was managed, with my every need attended to, including even assembling furniture I had ordered for my patio home. My patio home was Mid Century Modern, an architectural type I love and was a main factor (and rarity) in my choosing Wesley Palms among all the other competing retirement communities. Without exception the staff was helpful and pleasant, particularly the two receptionists Bobbie and Louise and the security workers, who doubled as delivery personnel bringing all my Amazon, Instacart, and DoorDash orders from the reception to my home. The staff (including maintenance workers) to resident ratio I figure to be an exceptional 1:1. The grounds are beautifully maintained to make Wesley Palms a little haven from the nondescript outside world. The only slight downside was the lack of ethnic variety in the meals served. I fully recommend Wesley Palms to those seeking a retirement community with attributes I have mentioned here. read more

We moved my Aunt into Wesley Palms almost two years ago and COULD NOT be happier. The facilities are constantly being upgraded with minimal inconvenience to the residents. The staff is very helpful and understanding of the residents needs. The attitude of the management is that they will accommodate any request as long as it reasonable and assists their community. The management team is also forward thinking and anticipate needs of their residents before issues occur. The constant challenge is to have the restaurant continually change their menu to make the meals appealing ... and they actually do a very good job at accomplishing the goal. Is Wesley Palms perfect in every way ... no, but nothing is. If you are willing to participate and be part of an active community then this is the place for you. read more

Over a period of two months he responded immediately to questions I had about a particular patio home that interested me. On the basis of his positive responses plus the favorable impression my daughter had during her on-site visit I chose Wesley Palms over other possible retirement communities I had also researched. First off, Wesley Palms offers Independent Living and Assisted Living facilities. They do not have Nursing Care so if that's what you need, look elsewhere. They do have a medical center on-site. Housing is cottages or in the main building. My Mother-In-Law has been at Wesley Palms for about three years and loves it there. The staff is friendly and mostly helpful. There are plenty of activities nearly every day. In addition to the usual exercise classes, movie nights, current events classes, etc. there are many inmate-originated activities. My M-I-L likes to play cribbage so she started a cribbage club and the staff reserves the room and offers free refreshments. This is just an example of the services. Transportation to off-site activities is available. Meals are reasonable - not bad but don't expect gourmet. Housekeeping is good at keeping the place clean and bright. read more

My Mother joined the community 3 years ago. There were a number of amenities that have long since disappeared. And the rents continue to go up. Now during covid they say there are extra expenses. Not the case. The residents are fed poor food in boxes, the quality of which has degraded over the last 2 years. And they have raised the rent again, having said they deferred it for two months. The numbers don't add up. They are preying upon the most vulnerable during the worst pandemic in history. Shame. read more

I just moved my 90 year old Father into Wesley Palms, and the whole experience has been top notch -- from the application process to the move to the onboarding. The team there, particularly Kathleen and Dawn, have been so incredibly considerate and responsive to our needs. When compared to other homes we considered, WP is in a completely different class. My parents moved into a beautiful, brand new, architecturally designed patio home in 2018. As a family, we are so impressed with every aspect of the Wesley Palms retirement community. We are continually amazed with all of the interactions we have had with staff members. The calibre of the Wesley Palms team is simply phenomenal, starting with Kathleen, who found them the perfect home, Melanie, the very caring registered nurse, plus all of the maintenance, housekeeping, and the dining room staff (especially Guillermo, who always greets my father by his name). I wrote the first review on this board 2 1/2 years ago. My mother is now looking forward to her 98th Birthday this fall. She's had her second hip replacement during that time and returned to Wesley Palms after a few months in at The Cove. Wesley Palms checked on her frequently in the hospital and at the Cove and held my hand through all of it. She also received a diagnosis of cancer which is not treatable at her age. She is back at Wesley Palms and receiving hospice care along with the excellent care from the nursing staff at Wesley Palms. Hospice personnel have high praise for Wesley Palms. The Care Center constantly checks on her ,and during the few times when she didn't feel well enough to go to meals, they catered to her needs, brought what she wanted to eat, encouraged her at every step. They got her up and back at meals in the dining room. I can not thank these caring and well trained people enough. I live 10 minutes from my mother and the staff will tell you, I am there a lot and I can tell you that the staff has not only cared for my mother above and beyond my highest expectations but they've also cared for ME during the times of crisis. I can't thank them enough. They provide compassionate care to their residents and if the resident makes an effort and the family makes an effort, you will find Wesley Palms to be your very best friend. read more

I was always told by my mother "You will never put me in one of those places". After my father passed at 90 she found herself without much to do. All her friends were gone or to sick to do much. We visited a friend at his urging for a lunch. No deal. Three months later she wanted to do lunch again out of curiosity. Two months later she became a resident. The best decision of her life. Moving to Wesley Palms at age 91 and is now 103 and going strong. Her analysis is "Those who come here to die, do so. Those who come to add quality to their later years live much longer than if they stayed at home". I would have to agree. read more

My family has been disappointed with this place since we moved my grandma in 7 months ago. It has been under constant construction, making it repeatedly hard for the elderly residents who pay nearly $10k a month to live here. Elevators are routinely out, and recently they have completely cut off the parking lot to redo it, which, in my opinion, had no problems in the first place. This project is to take 90 days, and residents (unless they pay extra for one of the limited carport spots) are required to park on the street and walk down a steep hill to get to their cars. They do have golf carts that will take people up to the main building, but refuse to drive them close to their residences (they told me they wouldn't allow me to temporarily drive by my grandma's unit to unload heavy groceries and allow her to get to her place with her walker - they made me park and walk up and down carrying all the heavy items to her place), even if they are hard of walking or have groceries to take to their home. On top of that, the food is sub par, the wait staff isn't very attentive, and there's a lot of bureaucracy and cliques. They've put out memos suggesting people's pets should be taken away from them just because other people don't like pets. Essentially this is just an extremely overpriced apartment that sucks its residents of their jlife savings and doesn't compensate them for the many inconveniences they cause. UPDATE: on 9/17/2017 at midday when it's in the high 70 degrees, as I was walking down the hill with my 80 year old grandma on her walker down the hill just so we could get to my car to go to a doctor appointment, I witnessed an 88 year old lady crossing the street, yelling at one of the guys in the golf carts to wait for her. She was only about 100 feet away, yet the guy ignored her and drove away, forcing her to walk up the hill by herself. With her walker. During a hot, hot day. Totally ignored. I am absolutely appalled. read more

I was researching Wesley Palms for my parents. I left four voice mails, and one email over the last month to the "sales" individual, my mother left 2 emails, no response from anyone. There is obviously something seriously wrong with the management. read more

So disappointed with Wesley Palms. My parents moved in and lived together for 3 years before my mother's death. Following that, my father lived in an independent cottage. His medication was changed without our knowledge by the doctor who comes on property (and to whom new residents are referred). The health center never told us. His health declined precipitously over a 6 week period, and rather than concern themselves as to why, they forced us to hire a round the clock nursing care to the tune of $15000. Ultimately, we figured out by ourselves the over medication, and reduced it. He rallied, but WP continued to insist on expensive, additional care. We moved him out to another community and have had no issues. WP refused to take responsibility, and was investigated by the state board, which made recommendations to them regarding my father's care. Really disappointed that after 6 years of residence, at a very expensive rent, WP treated my father this way. read more
