Although the…read moreJanuary weather left a lot to be desired, I can't fault this lovely B&B at all, and in fact they had so many lovely little extra touches that I don't hesitate to give it 5 stars and a hearty recommendation if you're in the area. Kim and Barry are really welcoming and their B&B is just beautiful. Everything was spotless, the room was lovely and cosy and the bed was so comfortable! As we were there for 5 nights we chose to save a bit of money by going for the green room which isn't en-suite and so we had our own private bathroom across the hallway, which was fine. All the guest rooms are on the ground floor and have a patio outside with a table and chairs where it would be lovely to sit out in the summer (we did wrap up warm and sit outside one clear night for a spot of star-gazing but that's not quite the same thing). You get the usual hairdryer, kettle, tea and coffee in the room, but instead of those nasty little pots of UHT milk, we got a small flask of fresh milk every evening - I just loved this idea as I'm a total tea jenny and I really don't like UHT milk in my tea! And there's a torch provided in the room too, which is handy if you go out walking as there are no streetlights on the roads around the village. We also struck it lucky as Kim did a mid-week bake while we were there and we came back from a sightseeing trip to find some chocolate chip rock cakes in our room with a friendly note - that's the way to get a good review out of me! (And they were fantastic). Oh, and there's free wifi as well. Breakfast is served in the most amazing room on the first floor with a high wooden beamed ceiling. Freshly cooked to order, the breakfast was great - they used fresh mushrooms and fresh tomatoes which I liked and the toast was proper chunky rustic bread which was very tasty. Kim and Barry are happy to chat to you about your plans and we got a lot of good advice and suggestions from them about places to go, which was appreciated. Mostly, it was just no hassle staying here - everything felt easy, we came and went as we pleased, nothing felt like too much bother. It was lovely and relaxing, just perfect after long days sightseeing! West Camel itself is small and quiet - you won't have any problems getting an undisturbed night's sleep - but there's a shop and Post Office a couple of miles away in Queen Camel, there are a few petrol stations on the A303 within a short drive and there are two restaurants within walking distance of the B&B (and you should definitely go to Wayne's Bar and Bistro on the main road). It's a mile from the Fleet Air Arm Museum, a mile from Haynes International Motor Museum and well situated for touring around Somerset and even further down into Dorset. If you're visiting that area, I can't recommend this B&B enough.

The bar was full of locals surrounding it so I had to walk up and down 2 or 3 times and ask to be let in to rider as the barman was busy talking to locals. Once I got to talk the choice of beers was good, both hand pulled and not. Only one white wine available. I was told someone would come to the table to take the food order. We waited 10 mins and nobody so I ordered at the bar 2 specials - sea bream. 30 mins later and nothing had come,so I asked the barman to ask. 10 mins later the fish came. It was a lovely whole fish with salad and new potatoes. Very well cooked and good quality. The meal with 1.5 pints and a glass of wine and water came to around £50. Overall the quality of the food was held back by the service level and focus of the staff on the locals - which is understandable as it seems to be the centre of the community with lots of very nice locals coming in and enjoying themselves - but it does make non-locals feel as if they are 'gate-crashing' a local event!

Upon arrival we couldnt have been made more welcome. We were invted in and shown around the truly wonderful and unique Spindle Cottage which has clearly had a lot of time, love and imagination invested in it. Every single detail had been thought about, from a fantastically stocked kitchen, utility room should you need along with comprehensive details of the local area, places to eat and local attractions. Itinerarys were even available for family days out or half days. This was without doubt the most comfortable and peceful setting we have enjoyed and there have been many. We even wished we had children with us as this would be a truly magical place for children to enjoy and Angela and Alban have thought of everything to keep children entertained, and the garden buildings show the craft of a true genius. We cannot reccomend Spindle Cottage enough.

Chestnuts is a lovely place with modern features and a delightful breakfast…read more We chose Chestnuts because it was within easy walking distance to the Glastonbury Tor. We came to see the sunrise at 4:50 am on the solstice. It was a moving experience. Duncan was coming back from the market with fresh bakery bread and fruit for breakfast when we walked back from seeing the sunrise. Breakfast was ready after we showered. After breakfast we walked down the hill to meet friends. Pearl has a lot of suggestions for where to go and what to see. Chestnuts has an excellent location for walking. It's 2 blocks to the odd little shops. All the mystical stuff from King Arthur and Mists of Avalon are within a mile: the Chalice Well, the Glastonbury Abby, King Arthur and Queen Guinevere's tomb. From here you could drive to see Stonehenge and Avebury in a day. My wife wants me to mention that we had our best showers here of our 2 week stay in the UK.

They went out of their way to run me into town when I was running late for my conference and the breakfast was everything delicious that you can imagine such as fresh juices, toast, eggs, ham or smoked salmon, fresh berries, yogurts, cereal or granola. Oh and don't forget coffee or tea. It was a real treat to stay at their B&B and I'd do it again.

The rooms are not your contemporary affair, and are very much styled as they would have been 50 years ago, though with added conveniences like flat screen TVs. If you're over 6 foot, you may find the beds a little short as they are very much luxury antiques (I found them tolerable). The bathrooms are beautiful, and contain large roll top baths. From what we have seen on our two night stay, Somerton is not the most exciting town and you will most likely have to drive the local area to find activities and places to see. We visited Cheddar Gorge and Lyme Regis, which are both an hour away. We didn't visit Langford, which is meant to be nice, and the hotel has a link with a bike rental firm here. The owner's and staff are very friendly and accommodated our needs. Breakfast is served with generous portions of local quality ingredients. If you want to eat in the evening, head to The Red Lion in Babcary. The restaurants and pubs in Somerton weren't very appealing.

It is truly the most wonderful romantic hideaway. Batts Farm is located just outside Cheddar. A tip for drivers - if you're approaching from Cheddar, the signpost for Nyland on the left hand side is obscured by 2 other signs but you're looking out for Latches Lane on the right hand side. If you hit the sign for Rodney Stoke, you've gone too far! Don't worry - turn around (as we've done twice!) and the sign to Nyland is much more obvious heading back towards Cheddar. The approach to the property is along a narrow farm lane but be brave and keep going straight on. The sign for Batts Farm is obvious when you reach the property. The first things that strikes you on arrival is the amazing warmth of the welcome by the owners Clare and John. They truly make your visit memorable with their hospitality. On both visits, we were offered tea/soft drinks and a piece of delicious homemade cake and biscuits on arrival. These were yummy and Clare's talents as a cook and baker continued to be demonstrated throughout the visits. In the summer, we had tea in the summerhouse, watching the squirrels and birds scamper across the lawn. Drinks are available for guests in the summerhouse fridge, another sign of the generosity that reflects the special nature of this B&B. On the colder second visit, we had tea in the warm inviting lounge. We stayed in the four poster room on both visits and the room is nicer than 4/5 star hotel rooms we've been in. The room is elegantly decorated in antique style with a sumptuous four poster bed and a large picture window looks out onto the gorgeous Mendip Hills. The bathroom is enormous with a giant bath and a big walk-in shower, which would have been an ideal hiding place for at least 10 people in a game of sardines! The toiletries provided are classy and my girlfriend especially enjoyed the big fluffy towels. The whole pampering atmosphere of the room is rounded off by the flat screen telly, free bottles of water and a biscuit tin of Clare's home baked biscuits! Breakfast is taken in the airy dining room. The bread is home baked along with other rolls - who needs Hovis when you have bread of this quality? Clare offers other home made specialities to start such as plums stewed in cinnamon and hot baked grapefruit (unique in my experience and highly recommended). This is followed by an enormous cooked breakfast. The locally sourced ingredients just tasted like nothing else I'd eaten before, being a supermarket shopper. The bacon was so sweet that I had to find out her supplier (ask and she'll tell you!). On one day, Clare also cooked the lightest ricotta pancakes. On most days, we were so well fed that we didn't need lunch! Clare and John recommended some nice places for dinner and even rang to book us a table. We enjoyed nice meals at the Inn at Rodney Stoke and Rajah Tandoori in Wells. Batts Farm also provided an ideal base to explore the many varied local attractions. We enjoyed visiting Cheddar Gorge and Caves - one ticket buys you entry into all the attractions. If you don't manage to visit all of them on that day, the tickets remain valid for 10 years! Wells, the smallest city in England, is 5 miles down the road with a lovely cathedral. We also enjoyed activities as diverse as walking on the beach at Weston-Super-Mare, go-karting just down the road from the farm, car-booting at the same karting venue on Sunday, browsing through the many garden centres in the area and satisfying the retail therapy itch at Clarks Village Outlets at Street. However, bad weather has stopped us going up Jacob's Ladder at Cheddar Gorge, so a good excuse to go back again to this wonderful B&B! They have added a studio room since I was last there and judging from the pictures on the website, it's just as comfy as the other rooms.
