I have attempted the West Highland Way on many occasions. I never get more than day's walk away from Glasgow, because I am just not fit enough.
The first few hours are delightful, and I walk along, singing and sighing at the beauty. After lunch, I slow down, claim that I am taking my time, enjoying the scenes (which I am!), but loosing energy. By teatime, I am looking for a main road so I can hitch a ride home. Pitiful.
However, it does remind me that I am living very close to some of the most beautiful countryside in the world, and there are often other travellers alongside me, who are far more capable, and have proper shoes for the hike. It's a good way to start walking in the outdoors- an easy enough path and spectacular view. read more
