Jay’s Training Grounds - Boxing class before Muay Thai class

I've trained at quite a few Muay Thai gyms over the years. Like a lot of people who move around,…read moreI've bounced from city to city and tried different spots. Most of them were solid. Good people, good workouts. But Jay's Training Grounds was the first place where things actually clicked for me. What stood out immediately was the way Coach Jay teaches. Instead of just drilling combinations, he breaks down the fundamentals and the reason behind every movement. Footwork, balance, timing, defense, how punches connect with kicks, when to check, when to counter. You start to understand the system instead of just memorizing techniques. That made a huge difference in how fast I improved. The atmosphere is also very genuine. No ego, no intimidation. Just people who want to train hard and get better. Beginners get clear guidance, and more experienced fighters still get technical details that sharpen their game. It feels like an authentic Muay Thai training environment, not a cardio kickboxing class. If you're in the Bay Area and looking for a place to train seriously while still feeling welcome, Jay's Training Grounds is worth checking out. Drop in for a class, talk to the coaches, and see it for yourself. You'll know pretty quickly why so many people stick around.

My Muay Thai journey started back in 2014, and from 2014-2018 I was fully committed to training…read moreuntil life hit me with school, work, and relationships that forced me to step away. During that time, I gained a lot of weight and felt like I lost a big part of myself. When I tried to come back, I found that the gym where I originally started had closed due to rising rent costs. I checked out a few gyms in Oakland, but none of them had that same community vibe where people truly enjoyed Muay Thai for the art and what it represents, I didn't feel welcomed Honestly, I felt lost and thought I'd never find that feeling again. I even considered driving far just to train because I missed Muay Thai so much. That all changed when I came across Coach Jay's bio and saw that he had trained under the same coaches I had when I first started. I looked at the photos, saw the location, and instantly felt the same vibe I'd been searching for. From day one, Coach Jay was welcoming, helped me get my technique back, and I immediately felt the support from the entire team. Since rejoining, I've gone from 260lbs to 210lbs, building muscle along the way thanks to the strength and conditioning classes (something I never had access to before). On top of that, I've been training in boxing, improving and learning a lot, while of course continuing with Muay Thai. I've even competed in a PKB and plan to keep competing in the near future. For me, Muay Thai and boxing here have not only helped me get in shape but also pushed me to grow mentally, physically, and spiritually. The training is tough but motivating, and the team always makes you feel supported like family. Everyone trains hard, but there's also real camaraderie and respect. This gym has given me opportunities to challenge myself in ways I never imagined, from sharpening my technique to stepping into the ring. It's more than just a gym, it's a community that keeps you accountable and pushes you to become the best version of yourself. I'm incredibly grateful to Coach Jay and the gym for helping me return to what I love and for improving my health. If you're serious about training or even just curious to try something new, I can't recommend Jay's Training Grounds enough. - Manny

As someone new to CrossFit, I found James to be a great coach -- patient, attentive, and focused on proper form. He gave helpful adjustments and kept the class moving at a good pace. I'd definitely consider coming back once my wrist heals. I did have a small billing issue that took a little time to sort out, but James ultimately took care of it. It's clear they're a small business doing their best, and I appreciate that. I'm glad to support a local gym that offers solid coaching and a welcoming community.

Pacific Strength is truly something special…read more I am not a lifter and walked in feeling genuinely intimidated by a functional fitness gym environment. That fear disappeared almost immediately. The instructors (Jessica, Zach, Makenna, James, and others!) are kind, attentive, and incredibly good at meeting you exactly where you are -- no ego, no pressure, just thoughtful coaching and encouragement. James, the owner, is a wonderful human. He sets the tone for the entire space: supportive, inclusive, and deeply invested in people's progress and well-being. The community reflects that -- the patrons are welcoming and encouraging, and there's absolutely no judgment. I'm more of a yoga and Pilates person, but I knew I needed to incorporate strength training for long-term health. Since coming here, I've gotten noticeably stronger, improved my range of motion, developed better form, and -- most importantly -- gained confidence with weightlifting. No one cares that I lift a fraction of the weight others do. Everyone is focused on their own progress, and there's always a way to scale or modify. This is an ideal gym even if you're not looking to become an Olympic weightlifter but are looking to maintain muscle, protect bone density, move better, and feel strong -- especially for women who want functional strength without intimidation. Pacific Strength proves that strength training can be empowering, accessible, and genuinely enjoyable. I can't recommend it enough.

If you're thinking about joining a gym for a fantastic workout and motivating community, stop…read morereading and go sign up with 9Round now! I've been going 2x a week for 6 months now and it's been such a life-saver for me. Before joining, I was struggling to get active again after having a baby -- who has the time and energy for exercise with one of those around? 9Round kicked all those excuses out! -- The location is so convenient; parking has never been an issue. -- The circuit-format is just perfect: no class times, just come in when it's good for you. -- Workouts are 30 minutes, and that flies by. -- Great for anyone new to kickboxing cardio (easy, fun!) with opportunity to build on those skills as you go. I purchased gloves and wraps after my intro session, but aside from that, the gym has everything you need. Including wonderful trainers! Dave is a real rockstar: kind, motivating, and watches out for your needs. All the trainers have been great, giving notes on form and encouraging you to push yourself when they know you can. The results speak for themselves: I have way more energy to keep up with a 2-year-old!

I've worked off the 20lbs I gained during Covid and feel stronger and more confident than ever, and it's all thanks to Dave and the incredible coaches at 9Round (shout out to Ovi)! A little background - I've exercised at a typical gym (24hr fitness, planet fitness, etc) most of my life. I fell off hard during Covid and was having so much trouble getting back into exercise. I had gained over 20lbs and my fitness and confidence were struggling. After failing to stay consistent with traditional gyms, I finally joined 9Round in January 2023. I'm so happy to say that I have stayed consistent for over a year now AND worked off my stubborn Covid weight and built muscle in the process, and am now happier and healthier than ever. So what makes the difference? 9Round is honestly just SO FUN in addition to being a great workout. You've never felt joy like punching a bag after a hard day's work. And getting to see your skills grow, your kicks land harder, and your punches more powerful? Incredible. I look forward to every gym session at 9Round, and the wonderful community the owner Dave and his coaches have built only adds to the experience. I love how excited they get to see everyone's' progress, the encouragement they give, and the helpful nutrition tips. A few other things - when I first joined 9Round I was stuck between them and Orangetheory Fitness. I tried both and decided to go with 9Round because of the flexibility of being able to drop in any time, which has been wonderful. What I didn't expect was how much the fun of kickboxing would add to the experience. If you're struggling to enjoy exercise, I would highly recommend going with 9Round, because the skill building aspect has honestly been a 10/10 for my motivation and happiness. Also worth noting is that no previous experience is required, and everyone is super friendly and encouraging for beginners. When I started I had no kickboxing experience - I could barely get 5 jump ropes in without tripping and my coordination on the bag was awful. Now I can jump rope 5 minutes straight with no trip ups and go rapid fire on the bag. The trainers are amazing about introducing you to the exercises and showing the proper form (including modifying the exercises if needed), so don't shy away if you've never kickboxed before! Dave also adds in so many wonderful extras at his location - he offers occasional drop-in classes for self-defense, yoga, Pilates, etc. In January he ran a 60-day challenge which included additional personal training and nutrition guidance which helped me drop my last 10 stubborn Covid pounds finally! He also has an In-Body machine so you can measure and track your muscle mass vs. body fat as you train, which is so much more valuable for tracking progress than weight alone! Anyhow, I could rant and rave all day about how amazing 9Round is, and specifically this 9Round location, but I think this sums up the major points. If you're curious, the first class is free so I'd highly recommend giving it a try!

KO1 Roundhouse uses a combination of Muay Thai techniques, cardio, circuit, weights, and strength training. You get a little bit of everything. The gym is setup where it's super convenient to drop in anytime you want during their opening hours. I love that I don't have a set time I need to be there because my work schedule fluctuates. Once you arrive, you start in the first round with jump rope to warm up. You then progress to some weights, and then get to box on the bags. Every day the workout changes so you aren't doing the same thing over and over. You get a personal trainer to guide you through each exercise and they will also hold pads for you for an extra workout. You can finish the training in 33 minutes or even stay longer. Their hours of operation are also really generous and I find I can always find a time slot within their opening hours to drop in. The facility is brand new and super clean. The staff cleans after each round so I feel I don't have to worry about someone else's sweat on the bags. The equipment is high quality and brand name. Cool gear too for purchase with shirts, sweatshirts, and boxing gloves. I'd highly recommend you give KO1 a try, they are great for all levels. New members can try a class for free before committing. Monthly membership fees are affordable and so worth it! P.S. They also do Muay Thai classes that you need to preschedule in advance but I haven't had time to check it out yet.
