The grounds are spacious with outdoor seating in the sun or shade - you can bring your own camp chairs or blankets to sit on or there were some picnic tables too. In the tasting building, there are clean bathrooms and plenty of tables and chairs. There are food options but we didn't try any food this visit. We were offered small samples prior to picking our wine. All of the wine we tried was excellent. We like dry red wine. The staff were friendly and accommodating. read more

Stumbled upon Westcave on our route to Fredericksburg - it was one of our favorites. We opted to try the beer flights and absolutely loved all of them. We ordered the pulled pork nachos to share and it was unbelievable - generous topping to nacho ratio with very unique toppings of slaw, pickles and pulled pork combination. Westcave Cellars is ~1/4 mile off Hwy 290 on the Left off of FM 1320. Small, nice tasting room with ample, shaded outdoor seating. Our server Porter was outstanding and very educational regarding both wine and beers. I enjoyed my beer flight. I'm an ale guy (blondes usually) and unfortunately they were out of their bond ale. Enjoyed their Lager & Amber the best. The literally cool thing is that the flight beer glasses were chilled- nice! My wife thought her 6-1oz pour tasting flight of whites and reds was flavorful & enjoyable. Small place that reminded me of 20 years ago when we first would come out to area. It really cool they do beer flights as well as wine, which is what i did. Beer was good and very mellow. The IPA was low IBU which is how i drink it and my fave was Amber. Wife did the white wines and bought a case of the Rose cause she liked it so much and also it was pretty affordable. Beware if you attempt to buy wine and have it shipped from the Westcave Cellars! After a great wine tasting, I ordered 3 bottles of wine to be shipped to my home in Missouri. The wines were fantastic and the staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. UPS later notified me that the shipment had been returned to the winery for regulatory reasons. I really liked the wine and wanted it so I have reached out repeatedly and after a month still no response. Once I did actually reach someone on the phone who had multiple excuses for why this had not been resolved -- she was on vacation, had been busy and was not checking emails, and that she would need to speak to the winemaker about what to do. I give up. I am a small business owner and I don't like writing negative reviews but I paid $242 for 3 bottles of wine and would expect them to be delivered. read more

I have been to a lot of wineries in the area, with my list consistently growing, and this is on my short list of favorites. There are wines for a variety of tastes, and I did not have a bad one here. The service was exceptionally friendly and warm. And the setting was calm and inviting, tucked away from the main road and with a more country feel than some of the fancier places. I came here with the Christmas Wine Affair Passport, and so I was able to get their variety tasting. Everything was terrific - terrific enough that I came home with TWO bottles, a dry viognier (which is tied for the best white I have had in Texas) and a sangiovese that is definitely my favorite in an area that has a lot of wineries bottling this varietal. They also have a food menu for those interested in grabbing a bite while they drink. And they have a lovely little airbnb in the back for rent. I am already ready to return. read more

Of the Texas wineries, we enjoyed coming here. The wines were very good, would have preferred a more in depth explanation of the wines but that's me being nerdy . The ladies seemed very busy so that could have explained that. Nonetheless, the wines spoke for themselves. We bought the premium wine tasting for $20 but ended up buying a Viognier from the regular tasting because they had a greater selection of white wines and it's Texas so you know it's hot . We happened to see a sign for the winery on our way to the pool and decided to check it out after. So glad that we did! We ended up doing a tasting and then getting a glass of our favorite and sitting outside enjoying the beautiful scenery and weather. I got the sweet rose but I really like sweet wines. If you buy 3 bottles the tasting is free. It's $15 for a mostly red tasting list (about 7 tastes) or $10 for a mostly white tasting. My friend got the red flight and I got the white and we shared between us that way we could taste all the wines. You can also drink a glass from a bottle you buy and have them reseal it if you don't finish it while at the winery. We had leftover picnic food that we brought outside with us and ate with the wine. If you don't bring your own they have a meat and cheese platter for $10. I highly recommend that you add this place to your list of must do's!! read more

Wife had the red wine tasting and I had the beer flight. The beer was all Texas ingredients. As an award winning home-brewer and certified beer judge, I can't say they were true to a style, but they were all flawless, well-balanced, and just plain tasty. Excellent lacing. The blonde ale had a continental hop quality that reminded me of a German lager, but with more of a malty backbone. It was great. The other beers were very good, just not to my personal taste preference. The environment was nice and cool on a hot Texas midday. They have water and feeders to attract hummingbirds and other colorful birds. The attentive wine steward even loaned us a pair of binoculars to spot a painted bunting. read more

Three things we look for in a winery: The wine. The quality of the wine is superb. We truly enjoyed everything we tasted, specially the bold petite Syrah. Very bold, dimensional. They do use local grapes from my understanding which I can appreciate as well. The tasting room- a bit small and quaint, but more than enough to get a good glass of wine and sit outside with vineyard views. It's a win from me! The staff- I cannot for the life or me remember her name, but the lady in the tasting room was knowledgeable about the wine (not just pouring), and educated us on the history of the winery as well as the description of the wines themselves. I hadn't heard of Westcave Cellars and thanks to the recent Luckenbach Food Truck & Wine festival I was introduced to Margaret and her well rounded menu of quality wine (there is more than just 1 above average Texan wine here). I instantly fell in love, and marked it as my next must see winery. It is a delightful drive out to Westcave, located only 30 minutes outside of Austin on the scenic Hamilton Pool road. Driving into Westcave I was impressed by the 8 acres of grapes they have growing on site. Margaret and her husband started by selling grapes to local wineries, and then several years ago started making it themselves. Their wines are made from all Texas estate and/or private vineyard grapes. They focus on traditional styled wines utilizing French style wine making practices. The whites are typically fermented in stainless steel, and the red's first in French Oak and then stainless steel. I immediately felt at home visiting here, the tasting room is quaint, and the staff are passionate, friendly, and informative. Margaret was amongst them, and was disappointed I had not brought my dogs. When they say pet friendly, they really mean it. Another couple was there with their large dog in the tasting room, and Margaret had dog treats for the furry friends. They had two different tasting menus: $10 to try 8, and $15 to try 7 premium wines. Everything was good, but the highlights from the whites were the Malvasia Bianca and High Plains Viognier (strong minerality vs. fruit forward = awesome). I absolutely loved the Ruby Rose, a definite dry French style Rose, which is hard to find in Texas. The reds were good too, they maintain a spicy complexity, yet are light enough to drink in the Texas heat. The highlight for me being the Ruby Cabernet. Close runners up were the Shiraz and surprisingly the Merlot (dry with a clean finish). From the Sweets list, the White Merlot was my favorite, it was lightly sweet but with a dry side. I could see myself having a glass of White Merlot with some spicy Thai food. After the tasting, you can enjoy a glass of wine in their Oak-tree covered picnic area complete with misters. You can enjoy wine on Saturday and Sunday until 6pm, and Sunday's with live music. It seemed that the majority of people knew each other here, and the owners. This is the most relaxed I have felt at a winery. I really felt like I was at home in my backyard with friends. read more

My husband, myself and my in-laws came here today while we were waiting to get into Hamilton Pool.. it's only about 2 miles down the scenic road from the park. We got a "tasting" to share each, each consisting of 6 different wines (red and wine). Each tasting costs $15, and if you purchase 3 bottles to take home, they waive your tasting fee. I had prepaid both tastings while my father in law was in the loo, and after they purchased the 3 bottles before we left, the staff was kind enough to refund my card (while I wasn't looking)..haha We had a lovely time, the grounds are beautiful and the staff is so so nice !! Definitely a hidden gem, I am very glad we came here! Oh, and the wine is lovely. My favorite was the sangiovese... very aromatic and delicious. 5 stars!! read more

We came here while on my bachelorette trip and it was a definite highlight of our trip. We came during harvest so we got to watch the process of making grape juice and even got to try some straight from the flow. The owners were so nice, particularly Margaret who kept us company during our tasting since we were the only ones there at the time. She gave us recommendations and told us about how they ended up in the wine business. It's great to see people so passionate about what they do. I'm not a big wine drinker but what we had was great. One of the friends with us has a family winery and she was very impressed. This was definitely something we won't forget anytime soon. I've always avoided Hill Country wineries because my idea of a relaxing afternoon doesn't include a drunk bridesmaid party getting off a bus. We chose Westcave based on Yelp reviews and were delighted. The setting and facilities are sophisticated, serene and immaculate. We came in at the end of the day and tried the Estate flight. Warm, welcoming and attentive service that included thorough education about everything we tasted. Bought three bottles and joined the wine club so we would have to come back and get our wine! I can not recommend this place enough. Margaret was so nice and walked us through the whole wine tasting. I would suggest the premium tasting. Every single wine was amazing. We ended up walking away with a bottle of the cab because we love cabs but if I had the money I would have bought a bottle of each. Margaret let us taste the wines and then walk around the vineyard. We got to see cows and longhorns and even picked fresh organic zucchini! She was going to let us feed the cows but there wasn't any cubes available. We got to see the guys pressing the juice out of the grapes which is always nice. She even let my husband taste the wines for free, so we could decided on a bottle. My family stumbled on this winery after a morning at Hamilton Pool. It's about 2 miles up the road from the pool. The tasting room was air conditioned, which was great to get out of the summer heat. Margaret was an amazing host: informative about the wines and grapes, giving suggestions and advice for our stay in Austin, and going the extra mile to make it one of my favorite winery experiences. The selection of wines was exceptional: plenty of estate wines and a great mix if reds, whites, and rosés. The tables under the oak trees were a fantastic place to enjoy our packed lunch.
