Close to 200 miles it 'tis, and a fine hike that's famed world wide. Don't believe me? I quaffed a couple of fine English pints here this evening with people from Australia, France and the U.S. (myself included). We're all starting the hike tomorrow. But I digress. A fine pub area, suitable selection of fine English ales and a few favorites like Guinness and Stella Artois on tap. Friendly bartender, and the food... wow. Had the steak and ale pie with a vegetable puree (turnips?) and cabbage that was heavenly. And I think it's no coincidence that this is the pub everyone seeks out before they start the hike because as you know, getting this much exercise, the body needs hydration! Yea, that's what it is... hydration. We're preparing our bodies (and minds) for the task at hand. Manor House, keep the taps flowing. I may be back to do this walk again next year and I can't think of a finer way for it to start than with a pint or two and some good company in your pub. Well done, well done.

Tourism is not extensive at Workington. The owners, Steven and Angela are really nice and do a good job of making sure you have a comfortable stay. I happened to stay in Room 10 on the second floor towards the rear of the building. The room was spacious, warm and clean. The bed was comfortable and I enjoyed three nights of blissful sleep. They also have free Wifi. At the moment they only do breakfast. I was told that they're in the process of refurbishing the hotel after which they will be able to provide a full dining experience. Talking of the breakfast, I was keen on a bacon sandwich. I had an amazing plate of sandwich on the two days I chose to have breakfast and got a good quantity of excellent coffee to wash it down. Again, no complaints whatsoever. They do have a policy of no food in the rooms, which came as a bit of a let down. However, according to Steve, they have had a few bad experiences of sauces and gravy being spilled on the sheets, which has resulted in this policy. So, you've been informed. Overall, if and when I have to go to Workington the next time, I would prefer to stay at the Green Dragon.

As an anniversary treat my partner took me here for afternoon tea over the weekend. We also wanted to have a look at the legendary Lake House which is a mile from the hotel next to its own private lake, with private spa and grounds. We booked in at 5pm for afternoon tea .. A little later than I wanted but it's seems they just serve late afternoon. When we arrived it seems we drew upto a private residence rather than a hotel... which made it more appealing! We were seated quickly in the gorgeous lounge area (if it hadn't have been raining we would have been out on the gorgeous terrace) the whole room oozed class. The coffee table was laid out ready for us and we decided to have cold drinks to start with our savouries. Not a single member of staff went by without seeing if we were ok and needed anything.. attentive isn't the word! So we set up our tour of the lake house after we finished our afternoon tea very quickly! The savouries were frankly delicious. . Sausage and choritzo rolls, egg mayo, roast beef (cooked medium rare.. as it should be) and horseradish, smoked salmon and watercress and ham & wholegrain mustard sandwiches. .. then the most perfect part.. A pot of light, creamy salmon mousse with roasted brioche. Being a savouries person this was the best part and wish there was more ... but as it's afternoon tea we needed to leave space for the cakes. The cakes arrived beautifully presented and obviously made by a master of baking! Toffee and cream profiterole, chocolate slice with many layer of creamy mousse and chocolate ganache.. Victoria slice.. sponge, cream and jam in perfect layers, raspberry cheesecake.. perfectly light and creamy.. The scone was to die for... With all the trimmings. The choice of teas was lacking many fruit teas but only Earl Grey and English Breakfast in traditional teas.. After we finished we drove down to the lake house for a look round... it was classic, beautiful and entirely an elegant way to host a small wedding or special party. I feel this hotel is a little overlooked being just out of the tourist area... but it is a gem. I would love to hire the lake house for exclusive use with a group of friends for a weekend or new year.. All in all a special experience on a special day.. The website is excellent .. another tick!

The aesthetic is charming English cottage, while also being updated and feeling clean. The hotel rooms themselves are more modern (though unique) to give you all of the comforts of home - my fave being the towel warmer. Our room was wonderfully clean (and I'm a stickler on cleanliness!) and the bed was so comfortable, especially after a long drive. It was such a comfortable and clean place to lay our heads for the evening. The hotel has a restaurant that I would also recommend. Breakfast was incredible - one of the first hotel breakfasts where I haven't had to douse in pepper haha. Well seasoned and well cooked, high quality ingredients. Jonathan is a wonderful chef. My husband said the hollandaise was one of the best he's ever had. I'd recommend stopping by for sure, and don't miss breakfast! My room had a wet room off the bedroom, which comfortably fitted the double bed and wardrobe and that was about it, just as you expect in such an old building. it was very comfortable. There was an a la carte menu available and an early-bird menu of two courses for £9.95. This consisted of half a dozen starters and 7 main courses and eight sweets. I had chicken breast in pepper sauce on mash with 'roasted medeterranian vegetables' followed by chocolate brownie cheesecake. I was rather freaked out when, waking at 2am, wanting a cigarette, I left my room to find the whole place in darkness.The next day I found out that I could have set the burglar alarm off by going out the front door to have a fag and that I should have waited until this morning. Breakfast was available between 7am and 9am. This consisted of the normal cafetier of coffee or pot of tea, cereal (8 types in mini-packs) orange juice, bowl of chopped melon. There was the option of a Full English or a 'Light Bite' of five options including smoked salmon and scrambled egg, which was tastey, but a bit rich (with the amount of cream in it) at breakfast. The garden is a lovely place to sit. Small birds seemed to be nesting all over the place.

After a train ride from London, we checked in and were immediately escorted to our rooms. It is a gorgeous, well appointed, old white cottage with seemingly unending English charm. The room included a queen bed with comfortable linens, en suite bath with a standup shower, in-room toiletries, coffee/tea service, and incredible views of the town of Windermere. Overall, it was very well appointed with modern features throughout. For dinner, we enjoyed the restaurant's evening special of sirloin and chips. We ordered it medium rare and it came cooked to medium. Prior to that we broke from English tradition, and ordered a very nice fruit & cheese plate for an appetizer. At the end of the meal, their sticky toffee pudding was quite rich and among the top four I've had in my life. They have a very lovely outdoor setting, complete with comfortable tables, that allow for glorious views of Windermere, both the town and the body of water. Angel Inn also has a guest lounge area, with comfortable sofas and chairs that allow you to warm yourself by their wood burning fireplace. It is within easy walking distance to the post office, co-op, Laundrette, and mere. It is a 1.6 mile walk, all downhill, from the Windermere train station. There are also bus routes to take you into town.
