Spring rolls are the ultimate way to determine if a takeaway store is worth returning to, so naturally I had to get one at Tony's. And I admit, I was a little disappointed. Much to my surprise, the spring roll tasted like cinnamon. I couldn't really figure it out. It wasn't terrible as such, just unexpected.... That being said, the fried rice was brilliant. It wasn't oily and didn't make you feel guilty for eating most of the container - which I did. The portions were good and prices were what you'd expect - about $10 for fried rice. Tony's chips were also pretty good - crisp and crunchy; just the way I like them, and with a good amount of salt too. There's nothing worse than not enough salt on your hot chips, so while their spring rolls were a bit strange, you can rely on Tony's to supply good fried rice, sausages and chips. They do a really good batter with the fish and I think that's what makes it good. Service is always very prompt - when we ring in an order, it's always waiting for us when we arrive. Their hot chips are good quality and they always give us a generous portion. They do a range of Chinese food too here and it is also quite good - considerably better than some of the rival takeaways in the neighbourhood. The Roberts Road location of these shops is quite popular with people on the weekends but you can generally get a park. There's a good selection of eateries here (Dominos, a bakehouse, Thai etc) but I reckon Blue Lagoon is probably the best of them. Make sure, if you get fish and chips, you get snapper as it's the best quality.

While the décor has been left to slide a bit over the years and the walls are getting darker by the hour, the shop that many call "Fat Freddy's Fish" still has the best selection of fresh fish in the area. They will also crumb it for their fish 'n' chips customers, which is an anomaly in Grey Lynn. Their chips are light and fluffy; definitely not bogged down by being left to sit in oil too long. While their opening hours don't extend far into prime fish 'n' chip buyers' hours, this place is still worth a look.
