You'll start thinking 30 floors of stairs sounds like a walk in the park, you'll get a quarter of the way and think "I might actually make it," and by the last 15 floors you'll question if you will ever be able to breathe normally again - let alone reach the top.
The Westpac Stair Climb is held as a charity fundraiser for Childhood Cancer Association. You can fundraise or just pay an entry fee of around $30 to climb the whole 30 floors of the Westpac Building.
Apparently some people just complete the climb to get the "view from the highest building in the city of Adelaide," but those people clearly have never heard of an elevator.
The registration process is quick, easy and online but unfortunately the organisation of participants on the day is a little higglety-pigglety.
You rock up at the event at the time you are told to be there (different for speedy gonzales, runners and walkers). You collect your bib and then join the line, hoping that you are joining the right line and that you won't be expected to run with the uber fast crew.
Hot tip: If you have any kind of athletic ability, join the "runners" group. You, like most others, will only run the first 6 floors and then walk the rest, but you won't have to be stuck behind the "let's chat about our weekends," groups (a.k.a "the walkers").
Breathless and feel like your throat is closing over? Apparently that's normal and will subside in about an hour or two. Don't worry you're not having a heart attack.
Worth it? Hell yes! You just climbed the tallest building in Adelaide in under 7 minutes! read more
