My son who is six loved every second, couldn't keep the smile off his face (despite his best efforts! If you happen to be in Aldi or Lidl and see riding helmet for sale... grab them, the gear in Carrowmore is basic and well used, it's always nice to have your own anyway. The ONLY thing I would change there is that the riders (young & old) are not supplied with back braces, its a really basic and incredibly basic bit of kit that all riders should use but no one does.

So after a bit of research on the web, I decided on signing up for one at Ireland's School of Falconry. Transit: I travelled here using the bus. I was staying in Galway City and I took the Citylink 430 to Claremorris and transferred over to the TFI Local Link 431 and got off at Cong. From there, it was a short walk (maybe 15-20 mins) to Ashford Castle. After entering the castle gates, it's another 10-15 min walk to the school. If you're arriving by car, the School instructions were to park at the castle visitor car park (near the golf course). Environment: I emailed them months in advance to schedule my Walk. Since I wasn't staying nearby, they asked for payment ahead of time, which was done via credit card. When I arrived at Ashford Castle, I had to inform the staff at the bridge that I was there to go to the Falconry School. He directed me towards the other end of the castle and told me to follow the signs. Along the way, you'll pass by the gardens and fountains of the castle, which made for lovely views. When I arrived at the school, I rang the doorbell and was shown to the office for a short wait. The staff also offered to store my backpack behind the counter so I didn't have to carry it during the Walk. My instructor gave a quick tour of the area and informed me of the proper handling of the hawk. Then I met my feathered buddy for the hour, Andes. As we walked the grounds and surrounding forest, Andes flew along to follow us and when he was signaled, he flew down towards my gloved hand. What was ordered: - 1 hour Hawk Walk (I had so much fun learning about the hawks and walking around the castle grounds and forest surrounding it) Yay/Nay/Meh: Yay! Definitely a Yay! This was such a unique experience and it was amazing to see how well trained the hawks were. Since hawks eat meat, they do warn you that some of their food will resemble animals and may be a bit meaty. Credit cards are accepted.

Love it, Love it Love it…read more Just back from a 2 night break here and it was great, a little hard to find initially as it is not in the main town itself, but easy peasy once you get your bearings. You would definitely need a car to stay here as it is in the middle of nowhere (part of its appeal) I really liked it, quiet and peaceful and there were NO children which is always a big plus in my book. The only reason I didn't give this place 5 stars was based on 2 things, number one there were no toiletries in the room apart from a little bar of soap, but most places I have stayed in the last 15 years offer complimentary toiletries. Also the breakfast could have been a little more extensive, as a non meat eater there is usually a hash brown or slim on offer as a bacon replacement but none was. What we had was delicious and plentiful, but there was no fresh fruit and no yogurt (petit filous are NOT yogurt!!!) apart from these 2 negatives everything else was grand, clean, friendly and quiet. A great spot and I will come back again. There is a pitch and putt course which was closed due to bad weather, and I'm told you can see Croagh Patrick from the hotel, but as it rained all weekend I cant confirm this! A lovely little spot, not ideal for young families looking for a brats club or for all night party ravers though. So it suited old fogeys like us.

Daniel (one of the managers) became an instant friend. He continued to give us GREAT recs for our short stay, even so much as writing them down on a napkin for me. Owner John Nevin greeted us each day with a smile and a story. The included breakfast is yummy and the dinner we had one night was amazing. It's also directly across the street from access to Clew Bay where we took a lovely hike along the water and sheep farms.
