This place is a haven for cool haircuts and dye jobs. Over the past five years, I've been to Scream and Vain. And in a pinch, I've gotten cheap ones at Supercuts when the need arose! But after my last visit to WSB, I've decided to settle on them for my hair needs. My boyfriend was an early convert to the stylists at Borseno's. Deirdre knows his hair and does exactly what he wants. I'm a little LTTP to the shop's awesomeness but I've made my decision and I'm sticking to it! Deirdre bleached my natural black to a spectrum of blond. After I saw the end result, I joked that I was getting in touch with my Swedish roots. And she did a wickedly good job with my red tips, mixing two of the Fudge colours (Red Corvette and Cherry Bomb) to achieve an awesome effect. It's a month later and I still have colour albeit faded. Stormy is friendly and Josh is a sweetheart. He's always super friendly on the phone and in person. They take walk-ins but be prepared to wait if they are busy. It's common sense. And don't get cranky, grab a trashy mag or make an appointment next time. They are closed on Sundays and Mondays so take that into account before heading over the bridge. Parking is free and plentiful on the street. The most I've ever had to walk was a scant block. read more

Unfortunately I cannot review how well they would have cut my hair. What I can say is that if you have an appointment, don't be late. And for that matter, although it says they are open until 7pm, consider them closed after 6:30pm. I made my appointment for 6:40 and I arrived at 6:43pm (the 2 cell phones I carried showed that time). I promptly apologized for being a few minutes late and was abruptly told that I was more than a few minutes and would have to reschedule. As they told me that I was completely shocked and looked up at their wall clock, which was 5 minutes faster than mine! They told me something about how they are closed (IE not going to help a customer) after 7 pm and that we are all treated the same. They asked me again if I wanted to reschedule and I told them not at this time. I was pretty shocked about their Draconian attitude and plan to never go back. Very few times have I ever felt so let down as a customer. I have a career where I deal with customers and have stayed a few minutes later than I planned on many occasions and was happy to have the opportunity to help them out, even if it wasn't exactly on schedule. I plan on spending my money at places that have them same goal and I'm sure there are more than a few others in the neighborhood willing to do so. read more

I sat on this review for a few days to come at it with a more even keel. My hope is to provide an objective rating of my experience. Overview: I had a pleasant, short experience that left me hoping for more quality and value for the price. Ambiance: This shop has a trendy feel to it with an inviting storefront and friendly people. I like the open floor without the isolated (individual) stalls. In my opinion, a barber shop is a place that you should be in a conversation with not only your barber, but with the other patrons and barbers as well. However, I did not like the recommendation to make an appointment. This reminds me more of a salon than a barber shop. The other aspect of the shop that I didn't like is that the chairs are a long way away from the mirror. It was hard for me to really see an upclose view of the cut as it was happening. Price: I am blown away by the price charged. For a "short" cut it was $35. I am not a man with a ton of hair and as such my hair cut only took 15 mins start to finish. There is a cheaper option for $17 that I assume is for a single length buzz cut. Twice the price for a few snips of the scissors? I'm disappointed. Cut: This is where I really stem my rating from. I have had expensive haircuts before in a salon style "barber" shop, but I have always seen good results from these places. My barber, a nice guy, only spent 15 mins on my hair. There was not a line. There was no rush. However, I found when I got home that my quick inspection, and his lack of one, left several areas of my hair at uneven lengths. Especially in areas like the back of my head/neckline and around my ears. I debated driving back to the shop to get this fixed, but decided that I would rather fix it myself to save the time and effort. To me, this showed incompetence in a profession that I would not expect from an establishment charging premium prices. I came into my experience hoping to find my new barber shop, but came away feeling upset and ripped off with only a poor haircut and a lighter wallet. read more

My husband used to go to Great Clips to get his hair cut and he always came back with a bowl cut looking like he was ready to go to war. Then he discovered Westside Barber. They did an amazing job on his hair, they cut it in a way to hide his bald spot which gave him more confidence. I am picky when it comes to my hair. I haven't been able to find and commit to a hair stylist so I tried Westside after my husband's successful do. Justine cut my hair and gave me partial highlights - I left looking and feeling great. I loved it the day after. I still love it a month later. She listened to me, kept it long and brightened it up. She didn't try to push any product. She suggested a leave-in called "It's a 10" for $10 and let me tell you, best product I've ever used. This place isn't just for rockabilies, it's for anyone that wants a good haircut by a knowledgeable staff. I recommend this place full heartedly and will go back - I might even get bangs! My second visit: Stylist - Brandon. He sniffled and had a raspy voice. He assured me that he was not ill. He was young, The vibe of this salon is very Rudy's-esque...alternative. Brandon was not chatty (perhaps because of his voice issue), and he did not have a good hand (when I am supposed to move my head this way or that so that you can get a better angle with your shears, I want a soft, caring, subtle suggestion). However, the haircut was surprisingly good. My stylist had tattoos and she made me look cooler than I did when I walked in. Nicely done. read more

I'm a woman with short hair and it's SO hard to find stylists who can make it look cute and sassy -- and not boyish! When I walked by this place, I dreamed that I had found my answer. I wasn't disappointed. Frankie does a great razor cut and is really chill. She also runs the place and makes sure her stylists are top-notch. My only caution is to people who think of a barbershop as a place where you're in and out in 20 minutes. It's true that the cuts only take 20 minutes, but there's sometimes a line and a wait. If you're finicky about your time, call ahead. They gladly take appointments. read more

Though a cool edgy decor and convenient location, I won't be going back anytime soon.....at least not until I only require a simple buzz-cut. Call me demanding but I expect the "hair scientist" to execute per my desire (ie: keep the sideburns long, fade the back vs. blocking it 2 inches higher than my natural neck-line.) Good place. Nice vibe. Got exactly what I asked for. Not sure I like it though. Generally I want a little more assistance from the person cutting the hair on what the right thing is. If I start with "it's too hot, this needs to be a lot shorter" I want to hear something other than "how short?" I'd prefer, "How about something like blah." The other barber provided some reasonable input, so I took it. Technically the haircut was very well done. It will take me some time to get used to myself looking like this. read more

I'm new to the neighborhood and I'm attempting to find a regular place to get my hair under control. I came away with a decent haircut, a rather common and hard-to-mess up style I've recently landed on after years of vaguely-spiky indifference. I'm a hair-conflicted male, lingering somewhere between the cheap place near the mall and that pampery $60-a-cut salon where somebody massages my head with something minty. I don't need to feel like I've had a day at the spa, I just like the attentiveness of a stylist that cares and can give me a cut that will work naturally and last a while. This place was okay, just not what I'm looking for. It was more of a cool/quirky alternative to a Great Clips than a no-nonsense barber shop where the stylists seem excited to do their thing really well with each customer. After searching around West Seattle and trialing different barbers/stylists I found Westside. This place Rocks. The staff is just my style, alternative, energetic, into music and give great reasonably priced haircuts. Whenever possible I lend my support and interest in local businesses. My only complaint is that they tend to fall behind on their schedule throughout the day, so a wait is likely. I fixed this by scheduling my appointments first thing. I choose Frankie (owner) to cut my hair, she rocks and is fun to chat with. A good laugh as well. read more

I just moved to West Seattle and stopped in at WBS for a haircut. The staff is welcoming, friendly and just overall great. The music was good (I didn't have to hear one John Mayer song!) and the conversation was entertaining. I was a walk-in and had to wait about 10 minutes, which flew by like nothing. On top of all that, Duffy gave me quite possibly the best haircut I have ever received. I love this place after only one visit! read more

I get my haircut here all the time. I like the setup of place and I dig the vibe. I think the price is a little high ($25 for a cut), but I've never had a bad cut - Thanks Deirdre! I'm usually able to make a phone call during the day and get an appointment within a couple hours of making the call. So in that sense its easy to get in and out relatively quickly. The people that work here all seem cool, but for whatever reason it seems they go through reception help fairly quickly. However, this doesn't affect my hair too much so I'm cool with it. as a sidenote- any barbershop that has playboy mags to look at while you wait is cool in my book. btw - I read them for the articles. read more

I'll start this off and say that without a doubt the vintage cuts I've received from the owner (Stormy) are definitely the best I've ever had. Ever, period, of any kind, full stop. That said, as others have mentioned the owner can be a little unprofessional at times and there's a lot of trash talking random people which can be a little offputting. But once you know her and her background maybe you can forgive and forget a little, you're still receiving a Damn Good cut and everybody's got their reasons. This is a little bit of a post-mortem-- I was late to an appointment by five minutes due to a few transportation issues and I was told never to return. I get the picture that the owner doesn't really need the business, and you're definitely there on her time, rather than vice versa. If you can handle that, definitely give Westside Barbershop a try. read more

First off this is in no way a barber shop, instead a sad excuse of a hipster salon. Most I've ever paid for one of the most botched fade in my life. I'm from NYC so I know what a real barber is, and this place clearly needs to be corrected. Hipsters obviously don't care much about their appearance, just look how they dress lol. Besides I've never seen a hipster with a good haircut, why this place gets any good ratings. Rather pathetic, and haven't really had many if any good experiences in West Seattle for service or quality. For some of us, going to the barber is a chance to escape from the loud, whiny, snot-nosed brats that you idiots allow to run amok all over the Junction. You have plenty of options on where to get your runts' hair cut at, but there are very few places where us adults can go to have a traditional barbershop experience -- complete with Playboys, swearing, and raunchy jokes. Thank god Westside exists to fill that void. Stop trying to ruin everything for those of us who don't agree with your lifestyle choices. She made the conscious decision to open an affordable barber shop that would be fun for her to run and work in, and it shows. I drove all the way to West Seattle to find a good haircut in Seattle. So after having a traumatic incident in my search for someone to cut my hair, a friend of mine recommended Frankie. She works at this location on the weekends (University District during the week, but I work during those times). I went out to West Seattle on Saturday morning and it was all worth it. I've been going to Westside Barber Shop since I moved to W Seattle 3 years ago and before that had gone to their (now closed) sister Shop Borseno's in the U-district since I moved to Seattle in 2002. Pros: -The haircuts are consistently great. In all the years I've gone to both shops I've had exactly one bad haircut, and since I've never seen the sytlist who gave me said bad hair cut again I'm going to conclude that the issue has self corrected. -The prices are reasonable, but not cheap. After tip (as a guy with hair that requires scissors) I can walk out for under $30 which is pretty reasonable for a haircut outside the "Super" or "Great" chains. -The shops atmosphere is fun and lively and the people who work there from the stylists to the receptionist are always friendly and fun to talk with. -No kiddos! Sorry breeders, but this is one of the only bastions of commerce in West Seattle without a liquor liscence not over run by children on weekends. I think kids are great, but let's face it adding a kid to any equation adds time and as you'll see in my next section time is not on your side when you go to Westside Barber Shop. Cons: -No matter what you do you are going to wait a minimum of 10 minutes for your appointment. I've tried everything... I make appointments and have shown up early and waited 10+ minutes beyond my appointment time. I've arrived exactly on time to the minute, and have waited 10+ minutes beyond my appointment time. I've even just shown up late, and... you guessed it... waited 10 or more minutes still. I've also tried showing up without an appointment, which has resulted in the only time I've ever got a haircut within 10 minutes of my arrival but more often resulted in not being able to get a hair cut that day. I've only had to wait more than 20 minutes a few times, but they try to accomodate as many walk ins on top of scheduled haircuts as they can which makes sense, but their schedule system simply doesn't work, so plan extra time accordingly. Oh, and if you go on a Fri or Sat and notice that there's a rock band in the chairs or ahead of you you can be sure that you'll be waiting 20+ minutes. -Not open on Mondays. I'm sure it makes sense to the owner/employees but it can be a pain. Bottom Line: Great quality haircuts, good price and a fun atmosphere, but don't expect to be in and out quickly. read more

Good haircuts, good prices, good people. Although I keep my hair fairly short I cannot seem to find a consistently good haircut in this town. That is until I found the westside. After 5 cuts by three different stylists I get the same perfect cut everytime. Being that it is a firly simple cut I have tried other places that were a bit cheaper, but they seem to screw it up each time, so it's back to the Westside I go. read more
