I really liked Westwood Books the first few times I visited Sedbergh. Now, however, I'm not so sure.
Firstly, the ladies who work there aren't all that friendly. There are so many welcoming, talkative shop owners in the town, then you walk into Westwood and get glared at like you're about to shove The Tale of Tom Kitten under your pack-a-mac (personally, I'm more of a Jemima Puddleduck / Mrs Tiggywinkle kinda girl). Not a great way to be greeted.
Secondly, you can actually find cheaper second hand books in other stores in Sedbergh, like the Tourist Information Centre book shop. And thirdly, their fiction section isn't as ample as I'd like it to be. If you're into history, travel, gardening, reference books, walking guides and art then you'll probably find something to suit you at Westwood. But if, like me, you prefer your literature a little less 'real' and a means of escaping the mundanities of modern life, you won't have a great deal to choose from.
Two positives about Westwood though: you can help yourself to their coffee machine and use their toilet if nature calls as you're stuffing books into your pockets. Result! read more
