WFYI is one of Indy's true hidden gems, Central Indiana's source for National Public Radio and PBS Television offerings. WFYI Public Media's mission is to "empower, educate, entertain and connect our community through impactful journalism, inspiring stories and lifelong learning." WFYI has been around since 1970 and was the state of Indiana's first educational television system. The broadcast signal reaches 58 miles, though 80+ organizations help WFYI extend its reach. According to the stats, approximately 450,000 households throughout Central Indiana continue to tune in to WFYI Public Television at least once a week, and 110,000 Hoosiers listen to FM 90.1 HD1 on the radio each week. The studio is located at 16th & Meridian in a building that's hard to miss. If you drive behind the building, it's even harder to miss with a gigantic Big Bird destined to greet you. WFYI's television offerings include 3 digital options - 20.1 is the main channel, 20.2 is 24-hour programming for kids, and 20.3 has how-to programming during the day and both local and national offerings in primetime. WFYI's HD radio options include HD1 (the standard BBC/NPR programming along with local news/public affairs) and HD2 (somewhat more trendier programming that is also often available as a podcast). Having attended multiple special events at WFYI, I'm always impressed by those who work there and those who broadcast. I've appeared on multiple shows and semi-regularly on Film Soceyology. I've also had the privilege of guest hosting Film Soceyology during times when host Matt Socey has needed to be absent. WFYI offers closed captioning services. They have accessible parking in back and the sidewalk is level to the front door. The front doors are automatic (push button) and there's an elevator to each floor. I've seen a couple gathering spaces that required a little planning in a wheelchair, but WFYI has always taken accessibility seriously. WFYI also supports numerous community initiatives and you can also see other smaller media organizations in their building. Truly, they're community-minded, engaging, offer a great public forum for discussion and debate, they're entertaining, and they offer a wide variety of programming that's truly stand-out with some of the best hosts for music, news, and public affairs in the city. They're the recipient of numerous awards, including Emmy Awards, and there's no doubt Indy's a better place to live because of WFYI. read more

WFYI is wonderful. From listening to a few of my favorite radio shows (especially Curious Mix with Jill Ditmire) to enjoying their fun events (the wine festival, Nerds club events, etc), WFYI is a great Indy resource for human connection and knowledge. If you haven't done it before, I recommend going to one of their events at their studio and going on a behind-the-scenes tour. It's fascinating to see all of the recording equipment, screens, and many Emmy awards on display (cool to see one in real life!). read more

I ended up here because of a sofar sounds event: this is an app that promotes secret shows. For ticket prices that are very cheap. You just know the general location until 12 hours before the show when you get the actual place. I was surprised when I learned that WFYI was it. This location is downtown on north meridian, and easy to talk to. When I arrived we checked in, and made our way to a big open space got comfortable and waited for the performance. Was very impressed with all three acts! The first was a poet/hip hop, the second was acoustic, and the last was jazz sax with a string base and drum. This was a great first experience at sofar sounds and I'm glad that it was at WFYI, The building was well maintained and awesome to see especially if you enjoy NPR and inside Indiana business. I watched WFYI / PBS as a child and now I interact with WFYI in a different way: as a volunteer! Through a friend, I learned about the Indiana Reading and Information Services (IRIS) program. Volunteers read and record books, newspapers, magazines and more for programming designed for a blind or vision-impaired audience in central Indiana. I recorded my first book in one-hour sessions and volunteered twice a month. I now read personal finance news on a monthly basis. I love that I'm sharing information and giving back to my local community but also getting my fix as a radio host / audiobook narrator. I highly recommend you support WFYI by listening, watching or donating time and/or money. read more

all.day.long. That's an estimation of how long I could listen to WFYI on any given day. From the BBC updates and Terri Gross' interviews to Diane Rehm and No Limits (locally), my ears are constantly perked and being filled with insightful, non-biased information. I'm proud of the work our local public media station does in the community. If you're a frequent listener, I highly recommend chipping in a few bucks to keep WFYI afloat as a local member. Can't wait to have my kids listen with me someday -- I grew up in a small town that was too far from any bigger cities to have public radio. *side note: This year I'll be attending their Ice Miller Wine Fest for the first time. It was cool to do a mini tour of the behind the scenes action of local media. I got to see and feel the numerous Emmys that WFYI has collected over the years. Got to check out the set of Inside Indiana Business which seems larger on TV. The Small Studio Sessions space was neat to see as well. Sessions go down every first Tuesday of the month. During my tour I learned of the different programs they offer on the air via radio and tv. I also learned of the podcasts including, Curious Mix, and about WFYI Nerds. I am a sustaining member, but had never had the opportunity to go to the studios. I jumped at this opportunity from the Yelp Elite events. I loved everything about the place. The community development staff were so friendly and helpful. They provided a tour which was fun and interesting. I look forward to visiting again if I get the chance, and might even consider reaching out to volunteer. read more

NPR has been a staple in my life from childhood. We tuned in every Saturday night for Prairie Home Companion and the top of every hour for the news during morning commutes to school (even when I'd rather be listening to N Sync). WFYI has made it possible for balanced news and great programming to accessible to all. Now as an adult, I am a regular (now voluntary) listener to Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me, Pop Culture Happy Hour, Up First, A Way With Words, Fresh Air.. okay, so basically if you're riding with me you're listening to WFYI. It's hard to believe this is right here in Indianapolis and all that goes on in this building. I have grown up watching WFYI, and now having had the opportunity to visit their facility and see the radio and TV production areas behind the scenes and how a small part of it works. We have been WFYI Sustaining members for about three years now, but honestly have been using the wonderful FREE service WFYI contributes for more years than I care to say. Honestly, it is some of the best local and national journalism out there. The programming is original and timely. Best of all, the respond to listeners' needs. For example, they recently added several national NPR shows, including It's Been a Minute and Freakanomics. I also love the daily replay of Fresh Air and I always get my news from All Things Considered and Morning Edition. I had the pleasure of being invited to be a part of the fall membership campaign and was on-air to share our family's membership story. The staff was so kind and welcoming and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Leaving your radio dial on 90.1 would be a good move. read more

I listen everyday! My husband used to mock my love for NPR, and now he regularly engages me on topics he hears on WFYI. My husband is highly intelligent, so if he values what NPR has to offer, then I am reassured that it is worthy of my time. I stopped watching cable news a long time ago, but I remember it being intense, and I don't think it's gotten any better over the years. WFYI offers news in a thoughtful way. I'm happy to see that Yelp is contributing $15 on top of Elite donations. It pushed me over the edge to donate during the fall drive. read more

I'm a sustaining member of WFYI and absolutely appreciate this resource in our community. A few years ago I moved and had a longer commute but I always joke with people that I get more WFYI/NPR time now, but I'm serious. I appreciate the local programming like All IN, the BBC coverage on my drive to work, Wait Wait Don't Tell me on weekend mornings and evening shows like The Moth that I just booked tickets to see in person while traveling next month. I would have so much less idea about what's going on in the world if it weren't for WFYI as I don't watch TV news or read a ton of news otherwise. I appreciate the diverse set of perspectives and programs immensely as well as some of the in person programs they host at their facility with special speakers. Great community asset! read more

Apart from WTTS 92.3, this is the only other local radio station I patronize. In addition to my favorite National Public Radio programming such - BBC Newshour, The Diane Rehm Show, Day to Day, Fresh Air, The World and All Things Considered - WFYI also offers up several slices of local fare that I enjoy: Inside Indiana Business, Indiana Week in Review, The Art of the Matter and Sound Medicine. I listen to WFYI almost exclusively during my morning commute so that I am "up" on what's going around the world, especially things that have happened whilst I was sleeping. I also enjoy the station for my drives back north from night classes @ IUPUI...that's when I can catch Classical 24 and wind down from my busy day. But, one of my most recent discoveries *that I love* is Wait Wait....Don't Tell Me!, which airs on Saturday afternoons. I don't often catch it unless I'm the car out Yelping, but this show is very entertaining....part news, part quiz show...always very humorous thanks to the cast of radio celebs at the helm, including Peter Sagal and Carl Kasell and whomever their guests are for the week. read more

I had the pleasure of visiting the studio this week and was blown away by the friendliness of some of my favorite radio personalities! I do listen to WFYI but not as much as in the past. When they had the "Blues, News, and Classical Music" format they had a good mix. Now I listen to Morning Edition and All Things Considered, but for whatever reason they have turned almost 50% of their programing to BBC stuff. From midnight to 5 AM their entire content is the same BBC drivel over and over again and it is really bad. I highly recommend WICR as a much better station with innovative programming. read more
