Many years ago when I took my car to a branch of Kwik-Fit I got shafted for a couple of hundred more than I should be and I swore I would never go back to one. Several years later and once again I have left it until the night before my car tax has run out to check whether the MOT has. Needless to say it ran out the next day, it was a Sunday so all the garages were closed and I didn't want to risk showing up a garage and hoping they could fit me in. Begrudgingly I had a look at Kwik-Fit's website and I was able to book an appointment online for the next day. The staff were polite if not a little indifferent and it was done pretty quickly while I waited. It passed and no other work was needed, for which I breathed a small sigh of relief.

I have been to Kwik Fit, Regent St, Leeds today to get a puncture repaired…read more I was informed by the "operative" (in a very surly manner) that I needed "two new tyres, as they were worn on the inner edge." I was aware that thewe was some wear but was very confident that in no way were they illegal. So they put the wheel back on and I left the premises. (They didn't actually refuse to repair the puncture which incidently was nearly exactly central in the tread and therefore was not an issue) but implied that they wouldn't. Certainly no offer was made to just do the repair. I have since had the puncture repaired by Motosave just up the road, who were very nice to deal with and with no qualms. On getting home I have measured the tyre depths, and they are in excess of 5.5mm across the tyre except for the worn edge, which is below 1.6mm for one twentieth of the width of the tyre. I have posted the current legislation below. "1.The grooves of the tread pattern must have a depth of a least 1 mm throughout a continuous band measuring at least three-quarters of the breadth of the tread and round the entire outer circumference of the tyre, OR 2.if the grooves of the original tread pattern of the tyre do not extend beyond three-quarters of the breadth of the tread (i.e. common with motorcycle tyres) any groove of the original pattern must have a minimum depth of at least 1 mm." Nice try to rob me, but unfortunately I am aware of the current legislation, and tyres for my car would be in excess of £200 each. Robbing b******s.

The owner of HJ Tyres couldn't have been more helpful and he sorted me out a very decent part worn tyre in no time at all for a very reasonable price (and put air in the spare). Small businesses like this stand or fall on 'word of mouth' recommendations and that means HJ should do very well indeed.

The do break…read morechecks, MOT's, check batteries and exhausts and any number of other car-related jobs that require a mechanic. I have been there a number of times with my car. The most embarrassing time was when I thought my windscreen wiper had broken and wanted to get new ones. It turned out that someone had just tried to pull them off so all the guy in the garage had to do was fix them back on. So I didn't have to buy any new ones and he didn't mock me for going in for such a minor thing! I'm certainly no car expert so places like this are very useful.

Also, I got ripped off by a garage back at my parents, who charged me for lots of work they hadn't carried out, and the Alba Tyres man took photos for me of the stuff so I could send it to Watchdog, and that was good. Ooh and once, when I lived on Victoria Road, my car wouldn't start, and it was something to do with a little button down in the passenger footwell, and the Alba man came to my house, fixed it, and didn't charge me. Those are reasons Alba Tyres is awesome.

Whether the Mechanic has been Mark, Paul, or any one of the other's employed there, they have always had the motorist's interrest in mind. A warm and welcoming greeting ever time, has given way to referring others to use their service, whatever the need may be. As I did then, I do now highly recommend this garage to those wanting a top job done. From a change of tyres, auxiliary/timing belt, brakes, MOT or Service, the overall work has been exemplary. Droping the car off in the morning and getting that call a few hours later to let me know the car is ready, I have always left a satisfied customer. Being a family man, too, my concerns have been put to rest with the assurance that "No car leaves their forecourt if they believe it's not road worthy." For that added assurance, when dropping your car off and you have nowhere to pass the time, then why not pop next door to Carol's Cafe for a breakfast or coffee.

If you can, then I would suggest booking in advance, but if not, then just pop in - but they may not be able to fit you in. They stock a full range of value and high end tyres and will advise on what you need, they won't automatically try and sell you the most expensive top of the range tyre of you don't need or want that. They will sort out the fitting of the tyre as well as replacing the wheel and the spares back in the right place. A1 service!

This was the first time I'd been to Allcar but they were recommended by my usual specialist. Top job done and full marks to the friendly technicians. I watched their other work too. What a change to find guys who actually care about your pride and joy. I know my cars (ex pro racer) and I've been around garages for five decades but not found a better one this last ten years. I always do my research first before buying, letting Graham know if I can get something cheaper and he'll always give a great price for fitting. Graham was actually recommended to me by a business user which again says he must be good! The comment about overalls being outdated? Do you expect them to wear tutus!?!?!? They're mechanics for christs sake, get a grip. Speaking of grip and the bloke with a range rover, check out tyre reviews and you'll see that vredestein had been voted the best tyre but that doesn't necessarily mean its the best for your car or for noise - always check online. Remember he recommended them not forced you to fit them so you have no one but yourself to blame.
