Are you wondering why I gave one star? Honestly, Wheelhouse Salon deserves none, but that wasn't an option. My experience here was extremely disappointing, aside from my initial consultation with Angelika on Oct. 20th. During the consult, I explained that my main goal was to blend my 3-month gray grow-out into something easier to maintain. I showed her photos of the soft gray-blended look I wanted, and she never once said it couldn't be achieved in one session. She filled out a laminated service card with the exact services and prices required, and I booked based on that information. On Oct. 28th, I arrived for the first color appointment. After reviewing the same photos again, Angelika brought over another stylist, and they decided to add a shadow root. When she finished, my hair looked nothing like what I asked for--I left with blue roots and barely any blonde. She apologized and said she'd fix it at my next scheduled appointment on Nov. 12, which included both the correction and a keratin treatment. Since she promised it would all be handled then, I trusted her. When checking out that day, I was charged $393.32--lower than the quote--but still tipped 20% because she said she planned to fix everything. My total came to $471.98. On Nov. 12th, I showed up expecting the correction and the keratin, as previously discussed. Instead, I was told I had to choose one service because she hadn't booked enough time. I chose the keratin since that's what she had scheduled. Afterward, while checking out, the front desk tried charging me $476 instead of the quoted $315, saying I "hadn't paid enough" at the first visit and they needed to collect an additional $40. This was never communicated. They removed one $40 error, but I still ended up paying $456.54. After realizing that I had now spent over $900 and still didn't have anything close to the color I asked for, I messaged Angelika directly through the contact card she provided. She read the message but never replied. When I called the salon to review the charges, another error was found and I was refunded $48.29--even though their written policies state they "don't offer refunds." It was clear I had been overcharged multiple times. I reached out again to clarify my Dec. 1 correction appointment. The salon later texted me saying Angelika felt she only owed me a base color and blow-dry, and that I would have to pay for the foil and toner--another $274. This would have pushed the total cost of this disaster to well over $1,200. They also claimed that my desired gray-blended look takes multiple sessions, something never mentioned in the consult or at any point before taking my money. Angelika had expressed total confidence that she could achieve the look. At this point, nothing made sense. How can stylists turn dark brown hair into pink, purple, or blue in a single appointment, yet somehow blending soft gray tones supposedly requires multiple expensive sessions? Either they lack the skill or they are price-gouging. I'm sharing this to save others from the time, money, and frustration I experienced. Always take a photo of the laminated service card--they rely on it, and you should too. My before photo, the inspiration photos I provided, and the results I left with were not remotely aligned. My 3-month gray grow-out is gone, and I paid nearly a thousand dollars for a result I never asked for. read more

I would recommend this salon to people, however I would not recommend you see Amber for anything more than a basic cut or maybe basic color. I've seen Kate in the past and she was amazing, I just can't seem to get in with her since my schedule is not predictable so booking far in advance doesn't work for me. I've also seen other stylists work while on my visits and it all looks great. The salon owners ( as you can see) reached out to try to make it right. I appreciate this and was truly hoping for a better resolution. I went back yesterday for my touch up and the woman who did my hair the first time was professional and didn't make it awkward for me, which was great! However she still did not get it right. I honestly think this is a skill level/ stylist understanding issue. The color isn't terrible compared to the first visit, however after discussing how I was looking for platinum this is not it. I know platinum can be a process however she told me " It was really white before toning but I didn't want it to be too bright and shocking for you so I toned it down to a more golden color" this tells me it was where it needed to be but instead she toned it down darker. The roots also look more just grown out and splotchy rather than like all shadow roots I have seen. read more

This was probably the worst hair color experience I've had in my entire life. To preface: I brought several example photos of what I wanted, a warm/caramel toned balayage. What I received was full highlights. And then she toned them back to my original hair color. After four hours, my hair looked essentially unchanged. And then she charged me nearly $400. Not to mention, I paid for a haircut, and she didn't even take the time to make a simple haircut look good. Because she had already spent four hours on my "color". I complained, and they refused to refund my money, but they offered to redo it. Fine, maybe there was a miscommunication. I obtained more photos, and prepared myself to explain in even more detail what I wanted. Three more hours were spent, I received more highlights. More toner. My hair looks almost the same, yet again. I don't understand how this is possible An absolute waste of my time and money. Never again. read more

The quality is extremely poor. I requested full foil blonde highlights with lowlights and now my hair looks like trash after spending 5 hours in the chair and 400 dollars. I would not recommend PJ. My hair vs what I requested. If you can do the ends blonde then the top should also be blonde regardless of the box color. I also do not like the boyish, punk rock cut when I am a feminine woman who wanted a traditional cut. If you cannot do color any better than that then it should have been colored all one color and I will GLADLY GO TO A BETTER SALON. read more

LOVED my experience here!! Everyone was so kind and welcoming. Sarah was very thorough; she did a strand test after our consultation, and worked very well with my frizzy, easily tangled hair. Sarah is very gregarious and made it a fun experience! I don't know what she did, but my hair had NEVER been softer. Some stylists are still wearing masks, many are not, but every time I saw a customer come in with a mask, I overheard their stylist ask the customer if they wanted their stylist to wear one (and Sarah asked me as well!). I think they could do a better job of explaining all the services that will be done to accomplish your goal, because it felt like a bit of a whirlwind to me, but I also didn't ask. I'm pretty obsessed with Wheelhouse Salon. I've been an on-off client with them since 2015. My set hairdresser is located in Huntsville, but sometimes scheduling an appointment only for weekends get tough. I hadn't been able to schedule my usual bayalage and cut for MONTHS! I needed something ASAP. When I saw Wheelhouse opened a second location in downtown Birmingham, I was really excited! Plus it was 3 blocks away from my office. In late December I secured a last minute reservation with Morgan. I've had my hair colored and cut at Wheelhouse before, but it was with a different stylist. You still have a brief moment of anxiety whenever you start off with any new stylist. Morgan by far exceeded my expectations. She was fast efficient and did everything in about 2-2.5 hours (compared to my normal 4-5 hours). I loved my result! When I was done I went ahead and schedule my appointment with Morgan 8-10 weeks out, which leads me to yesterday's experience. Yesterday was amazing! I opted out for a full bayalage and only went for a cut. Sitting in Morgan's chair I asked if I could get a toner or refresher for my blonde ends without actually dying it. Of course she had something. Morgan got me in, shampooed, conditioned, added a refresher to my blonde ends and styled all for around $60-$70 including tip and under 1 hour. I don't know about you but that's all A+ in my book. I'm extremely happy with Wheelhouse, esp. Morgan! I'll be a forever customer. read more

I have always thought very highly of Wheelhouse Salon and their owners. I actually had some personal encounters with one of the owners years back and that is one of the many reasons I chose this salon. However, I would never expect any business owner to act the way Johnny Grimes did today, no matter what a client may have done. I could go on and on about the price gauging, the unprofessionalism, the bad service I received. But at the end of the day, I sent a very well articulated email regarding the $900 + they've charged me for services I did not receive and over 8 hours of PTO I have spent at the salon. I also went to the dermatologist because I was told by the master stylist that I have alopecia, which I do not, and this cost another few hours in PTO and $60. The "manager" called this morning and was crying as soon as I answered the phone. I explained that I want the services I was charged for. After 18 minutes of trying to get a breakdown of what I've been charged for and begging for my hair to be fixed at my appointment today, I asked the manager to please stop crying. I didn't mean to upset her. This isn't saving lives. This is hair. If she could not be professional on the phone with an upset customer, then she should figure out a resolution and call me back. She was sobbing at this point. I apologized for upsetting her and I hope she could feel better. Johnny called me about an hour later and said "this would be a short call but I'm not allowed back into his salon. If I come in, the cops will be called." I asked for a refund for the services I did not receive, he refused. I said that they had my hair extensions that I purchased and brought into the salon. He refused to return those as well. He finally said that I could call and he would bring them out to me, which he did in a very unprofessional manner. I am at a loss of words for how unprofessional this entire experience was. I still do not know what I paid for. I still do not have all of my hair extensions. And furthermore, for an owner to not even hear out the customer who has spent thousands of dollars in their salon says a lot about them. I do believe that the owners are a good Christian family and his actions and words did not exhibit any Christ like behavior much less what they say they stand for. I'll continue to pray for him and hope it softens his heart to unhappy customers. I hope everyone will consider your time and money before choosing to visit this salon. To Johnny, I never called your salon manager a single name. She was crying when she called me. I kept asking her to calm down, that it's just hair and there's no reason to be upset. I also continued to apologize for her crying. It was really uncalled for and unprofessional when I'm seeking a simple resolution. You can continue to speak untruths to help your business, but I have the call recorded and will be happy to send it over. Furthermore, for you to not address the real issue and to instead spend your time pointing fingers is very telling of what kind of people run Wheelhouse Salon! :) read more

Absolutely LOVED this place and my stylist, Sarah! I've been very meticulous about hand hygiene and social distancing and was very relieved that this salon follows safety protocols. This is the type of business I am happy to support. So a major tip of my hat to them for enduring COVID-19 measures for the health of others. Community is everything and these guys get it. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming! Even though everyone was masked, they'd smile with their eyes! The front desk personnel were very informative and attentive. The atmosphere was colorful and uplifting. They have comfortable and abundant seating while you're waiting. I was excited to see that they offered R & Co products. I had tried a few samples in the past (which I loved!!) so this felt like I hit jackpot. My haircut was on point - which has been a rarity in my past experiences at other hair salons. I really wanted to love this place, I was so excited to finally get a nice freshen up on my hair as it had gotten pretty long. I'm not normally one to freak out over some miscommunication in a hairstyle but what I received was so far from what I had envisioned, I started bawling in my car the second the door shut. I previously had long, decently thick hair, and I asked to have it brought up and then have my layers (they were king layers) refreshed and along with my face framing pieces. I was asked if I wanted it thinned and I said a little bit. I was asked if I liked the length of the hair and I liked the length, but after that I was not asked or clarify or anything about what my intentions were for this cut. I would've said something but I didn't have my glasses on and I trusted the professional ya know? But when I put my glasses on at the end, I was told "I pretty much just cut you a shag because the picture looked pretty shaggy" I was shocked. My face framing pieces somehow turned into almost bangs? What used to be my long layers were suddenly tons and tons of layers all the way up my head. And my "light" thinning ended with what seems like half of my hair thickness gone. I didn't have the heart to tell the stylist because she didn't do a bad job on the cut (and I wanted to just leave so I wouldn't start crying in front of anyone, so I just said I love it and left) but it's simply not what I had wanted and I'm just devastated to have not been consulted before the scissors started flying. I got home and tried to see if I could style it how I liked/the photo but it's so thin, overly layered, and with the weird bang thing, I just couldn't make it work like in the reference photo. Gonna have to try and figure out how to like it my vacation next week :/. He did a great job at listening to what I wanted, and give me some tips on how to style my hair. I really liked his technique on how he cut my hair. He blew it dry, straightened it and then cut it. Sammie Sok is the most amazing stylist! Not only is she the sweetest, most down-to-earth human being, but she is incredibly talented and an expert on all things beauty. She is constantly studying and learning new techniques. She's pretty much a walking encyclopedia on everything there is to know about beauty. I trust her 100%. When I moved to Birmingham 4 years ago, it was a long and difficult journey in finding a hairdresser. I was about 2 years in when I finally found Sammie. I have thicker hair that kept doing this weird triangle look (imagine a broom head) with every hairdresser I went to. The first time I went to Sammie, I told her about this problem. She seemed to understand instantly. She explained every step of the way: starting with how she diagnosed the problem, treatment options, and the technique she thought best to fix it. I'm always really cautious about letting people do things to my hair because it's my baby and I've had a couple bad salon experiences. I have silkyish Asian hair and generally people in the south have trouble coloring or cutting it. I used to go all the way to Atlanta to get my hair cut and colored because it makes me so anxious. But I've been to Wheelhouse twice now and seen Sammie Sok and she's been amazing!! The first time I went, I got balayage and she gave my black hair a nice caramel accent. Today was my second time here and I got a long-layered bob. Background: I've had long hair (down to my waist) for the majority of my life and it means ALOT that I cut it like this. I showed Sammie some pictures and she was super supportive and told me what would work for me and what wouldn't. She knows I have to put my hair up a lot, so she took that into consideration for me (something I neglected to do). This salon is managed very well and always feels CLEAN and bright inside yet warm and comfortable with exposed brick walls and wood floor. A cheerful environment with friendly, happy people. I dont know if this is just the vibe that yall are trying to create but its extremely "our shit dont stink". Everyone looks at you, but no smiles on the faces. It was disappointing and slightly depressing. 3. My hair stylist (dont know her name bc she didnt care to learn mine, let alone talk to me) had no idea what to do with my curly hair (i am of ethiopian decent). I have no problem with hair stylists who dont want to cut my hair, but DONT HALF ASS IT. and DONT ACT LIKE YOURE DOING ME A FAVOR. 4. Overpriced for the quality. I've had MUCH better service at Great Clips in Hoover on Montgomery Hwy by Publix and Starbucks (check them out!) 5. Unfortunately, even when I came back after this particular hair stylist (will find out her name for future reference), she was still so uninterested in my hair that I just gave up on Wheelhouse Salon as a whole. 6. The owners of this company went to a church that I used to go to so I really wanted to love my experience, but I'm sorry (not really that sorry bc I paid about $70 for a shitty haircut), I just cannot. 7. I am a junior at the Collat School of Business and I am literally going to school to learn how a business is supposed to run... This is just not it. 8. I have worked in retail/restaurant/hotel locations since the age of 16 for minimum wage and have always tried my best to treat people with RESPECT. I went into wheelhouse downtown for a blowout before a wedding. I do hair myself, so I'm very particular and have fairly high standards. Leah, an apprentice, blew me out and KILLED IT! I was expecting to curl my hair myself after because I'm just picky about curls, but she honestly did such a good job with a round brush that I'm leaving it (and loving it!) If she did this well as an apprentice, I can't imagine how great the other stylists who're training her are! read more

This is the only salon I go to now since my Mom has retired from doing hair. I've never had a bad experience here. Everyone is super friendly and sometimes I have to make appointments with different stylists instead of staying with one, but I never worry because I've never had a bad haircut from anyone there. I also got tired of threading my eyebrows and started to get them waxed when I go in, and they are always great. The salon itself it very big and chic. I recommend this place to everyone. read more

Madelyn was attentive to what I wanted and did a fabulous job trimming, coloring, and blowing out my hair, which definitely needed some TLC after the COVID lockdown. The appointment was easy to make online, it was easy to find street parking (and they have a lot a couple blocks away), and the space is calming and trendy. All stylists appeared to be very careful with wearing masks, cleaning hands frequently, and sanitizing chairs before and after use. I will absolutely be returning to Madelyn. read more
