We added the breakfast to our stay which was a good mix of all kinds of fruit, breads and other breakfast items. Coffee, tea and juice were brought to the table. Totally worth it before the long tour days. The area felt very safe. We walked around at night with no issues. There is Fort Copacabana across the street so that might have been a part of the safety. Plenty of restaurants and markets nearby to choose from. The rooms are clean and basic. It's pretty much the standard for hotels I've stayed at internationally. If you are expecting the 2,900 square foot Hangover Suite at Caesars Palace, you'll be very disappointed. It's real "standard", nothing fancy. (FYI, for fancy try Rio Sofitel, but there's a big price difference) Breakfast each morning was good and the staff was always friendly and accommodating. Overall I found this hotel acceptable. I rolled the dice when I booked Mar Ipanema and I'm happy to report that it turned out to be quite a charmer. The hotel's right on Rua Visconde De Pirajá which is a major shopping street with plenty of juice bars, restaurants, clothing boutiques and shoe shops as soon as you step outside. Ipanema beach is just two blocks away. Location-wise, the hotel's pretty unbeatable if you want to be in the Zona Sul area of Rio. Rooms are clean and sparse. I found mine quite comfortable and quiet (ask for a room that faces the back of the hotel if you're a light sleeper). When I departed for a run or breakfast it was cleaned promptly (which I love). Breakfast is included in the room rate and is served buffet style downstairs in the pub/restaurant, Armazém Devassa. Highlights include fresh watermelon juice and scrambled eggs that are not made from powder (hey, it's the little things). Wifi is very spotty (but if you travel to Brazil often for work, you're used to this) at the Mar Ipanema. There's no gym, but why not take a walk or run along the beach? The staff speaks English and is very accommodating. Overall, I'd call Mar Ipanema pretty good value for Brazil (where I generally think hotels are overpriced relative to their amenities) and I'd stay here again gladly.

Unfortunately, I could not travel to Brazil due to a very recent visa requirement for US citizens.  With the help of hotels.com I managed to cancel the booking. This hotel categorically refused to give me a single penny back. I am business savvy and understand the inconvenience of last minute cancellations on a business like this. However, there is a fine line here. Under the circumstances, I would have deemed a partial refund more than fair. But simply pocketing every single penny under the excuse of a cancellation policy is simply a disguised form of theft. It is short term greedy and not a good business practice

The building, like all in Barra de Tijuca, have a security guard as safety in Rio can be an issue, especially for tourists. This building is conveniently located in the main street facing the sea but your will need Ubers to move around and indicate them the exact name of the building otherwise you can be dropped in a nearby one but requires walking and at night is not safe.

She spoke fluent english and made various recommendations for food, ATM locations etc. It's difficult to find people who speak english; but this Hotel made sure all the front desk people spoke English. You will get your moneys worth at this hotel because; you get separate bedroom, living room, kitchen and balcony. Also, two flat screen television. I would recommend staying at this place, it's more affordable than regular hotels who only offer a bed and bathroom.

Customer service is practically non-existent. The front desk often had 5-6 people standing there while a single clerk managed a long line of guests. Communication was a massive hurdle; outside of the front desk, no one spoke English, and staff continuously spoke Portuguese to us despite being told we didn't speak it. It took four calls and a near-overflowing toilet demonstration just to get a broken toilet fixed because the maintenance worker didn't understand the issue. Furthermore, housekeeping ignored dirty room service plates (leading to trays piling up in the hallways), and a simple poolside food order took over an hour. Nobody here seemed to want to help. I will definitely book a different hotel next time.

Always had hot water when I wanted. Location. Location. Location. Hotel is maybe 1/2 block from the beach. Windsor Miramar is closer and more expensive but seriously, it's not worth it. It is only 2 streets (literally) away from the beach. Customer service-the front desk personnel were always on point. They were always nice and willing to give to give you directions. Room service/housekeeping-definitely on point. We didn't get it every day we were here but they delivered. Food was hot. Sheets were clean. In room safe- always a plus. Con: LOUD! Ok, we were on the 3rd floor. We can hear so many noises. We can hear bathroom noises like flushing or water water running from neighbors. Shuffling or stepping noises outside the room I guess or upstairs. No microwaves in the room. They have a minibar/refrigerator. If you call downstairs, (because sometimes they have a common microwave) they said they have a management policy that they can't heat up outside food. Really? We're in Brazil. We had a standard room and it has no view. The pool is TINY so don't bother. The bar at the pool has nice drinks though so that is a nice perk. The fitness center is also TINY. It has literally 4 equipments. So I would stay here again. *****If you are a first timer in Rio***** only exchange a few bucks at the airport. You will find a exchange place in Rio for better exchange rate. Ask around. We found a place right by the hotel for for .299 and we walked around and they exchanged for .30. The "taxi" ride from the airport was about $45 US dollars so if you do better than that then that is good because the same "taxi" driver offered to drive us back for $23.

The room is basic and clean, but the overall aesthetic of the interior is far from that of fancy boutique hotels. Stylistically it reminded me of Holiday Inn. The breakfast buffet is on the boring side, comparable to the typical Marriott standard breakfast buffet. The staff is friendly and helpful. The selling point of this hotel is the fantastic location, it's only a block away from Copacabana Beach (Posto 5) and it's pretty safe to walk around even at night. Posto 5 beach is pretty chill, it has a nice eclectic mix of locals and tourists and we didn't get harassed too much by the street vendors who roam around the beach . The wave is pretty high, but you are better off around Posto 5 because it's even worse around Posto 1-3.... I would avoid those unless you are a surfer. Posto 9 & 10 (Ipanema/Lebron) are considered to be the safest and the most trendy beach area where you will find more rich and stylish folks and from Posto 4 and below, the beach becomes more ghetto. There are enough restaurants and convenience stores around the hotel. If you want a cool romantic hotel, this is not the one for you. But if you are looking for an affordable hotel that's close to the beach , this might work for you.
